Does this ring look good on me? Tiffany Etoile "engagement" ring

I loved the Tiffany Etoile engagement ring when we got engaged 15 years ago, but couldn't afford it. Went with a generic sticky-uppy prong setting, looked lovely but I could never get used to wearing it (sensory issues, also I am clumsy with a hands-on job). Eventually sold it and just wore my plain platinum wedding ring.

DH suggested getting an anniversary ring. I'm not keen on eternity rings, and in my browsing, found a few Etoiles (now long discontinued) for sale.

I've tried one on and it's so smooth and comfortable - it's 0.35ct in platinum. I love it. It's got all its paperwork, had it checked out in Tiffany with the owner, it's a great price. But I have zero sense of style so am not sure if it looks awful or nice, if the diamond looks too small and the band too big, etc. I'd be very grateful for opinions from you stylish people. Honesty is welcome! Thank you.

Edit: argh sorry for my giant hand. I can't resize. My ring size is actually small (H1/2 UK).

I think you could get a similar but less chunky one made for you by an independent jeweller easily enough which would be in proportion with your wedding ring.

LadyPoison · 06/01/2024 13:12

It looks out of proportion with your wedding band. How does it look wearing them the other way round? Otherwise If you really love it I would wear it alone.

witte · 06/01/2024 13:16

It's not a pretty ring imo and too thick to look pretty but if you like it that's all that matters.

Moveoverdarlin · 06/01/2024 13:16

I really like it. You have lovely hands and I love that it’s a little bit chunky on your dainty fingers. I have a Tiffany engagement ring and it’s lasted really well.

XiCi · 06/01/2024 13:16

I love it OP but think it would look much better on its own without the band. Would you wear the wedding band on the other hand or not at all? I had a similar dilemma when DH bought me a beautiful eternity ring. It looks better on its own so I just don't wear my wedding band now

watchingsmurfs · 06/01/2024 13:16

I was about to reply that I thought the Tiffany one looked too big next to your wedding band but may be ok on its own.

Then I saw the second photo. It looks beautiful! This may not have been your preferred style but seeing this in comparison to the Tiffany shows that you can do so much better. The more delicate style looks so gorgeous on your hand and compliments the wedding band well. Maybe you can find something that gives the same overall effect in a style you prefer

BasiliskStare · 06/01/2024 13:17

@DogFish614 I much prefer the etoile - but then I have had one for 29 years , I think it looks elegant and understated . The rub over setting has meant I have worn mine every day for 29 years. Doesn't catch on anything. I don't think it looks chunky on you at all.

So my vote is for the etoile. I tried on so many sticky up solitaire settings and just didn't appeal to me . As soon as I put this one on - I thought - that's me. So purely personal taste . I think it looks lovely on you .

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 06/01/2024 13:22

I love the first one. It’s such a practical setting and once it’s resized it will look perfect.

UpUpUpU · 06/01/2024 13:22

I like the ring but don’t thing it goes with your wedding band. Could you wear it on another finger? Give it the glory it deserves?

Nancydrawn · 06/01/2024 13:23

OP, it's a great ring!

If it's what you love, have you considered wearing it on another finger? Perhaps the ring finger of your right hand?

I often wear my engagement ring on different fingers, including my ring finger, and I find it looks both elegant and a little fun. (The pic isn't my hand--it's from a google image search.)

I'm another one who thinks you have lovely hands but that the first ring is too bulky on them for my tastes.

But if you love it, go for it! Though I wonder why you'd be asking opinions if you really did love it?

HumTamborine · 06/01/2024 13:28

Also, I know exactly what you mean about not having a sticky-up ring and why. I'm exactly the same. I found a beautiful lower-set diamond on a dainty band thinner than the diamond (I also have quite slim-boned hands) in an independent jewellers. They do exist, just perhaps not so common!

Cherrysoup · 06/01/2024 13:29

The ring is massive for your hand and is far too big compared to the wedding band, imo. Sorry, not a fan.

Falkenburg · 06/01/2024 12:43

The setting is horrible.

I don't like engagement rings but wouldn't notice in real life. Everyone has different tastes. I can hardly see a difference between the two rings the OP has posted. Neither look "horrible" to me but neither are particularly interesting either. The eternity ring someone posted looks horrible to me, others will like that style.

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 13:34

Thank you everyone! Back from my walk in muddy woods with frozen fingers, have a 5 min window before going out for a burger. My lifestyle is so glamorous.

I am definitely open to not wearing the wedding band. I don't like rings on my right hand as they irritate me even more, but am not superstitious about having to wear it every day - though I would prefer to.

I do want a genuine Tiffany, sorry! I've had other jewellery made before (big jewellery loving family even though I don't wear it), it's lovely but I want something specific for this.

Don't read too much into my asking / if you need to ask it means you don't love it. It's just my personality, I question everything expensive during the buying / choosing phase. I make my own mind up in the end but find it really helpful to hear from other peoples' experiences and perspectives. I don't fall in love at first sight either 😉

@Poppies26 and @BasiliskStare I am very excited to hear that you have the Etoile. I would love to see a photo. Even PM'd to me if you don't want to post publicly. I have seen so few on real hands!

Still thinking and pondering, THANK YOU again for the replies, they have been so helpful.

Personally I think the band of the first ring is too thick and I much prefer the look of the second. However it is your ring and you clearly like the thickness of the band. So if you love it, get it. It doesn’t matter what others think - only you.

Zigzagga · 06/01/2024 13:37

It looks amazing on you!

ArchetypalBusyMum · 06/01/2024 13:39

I love the style and also like drones flush with band as I do a lot with my hands and hate anything that catches. I also love chunky.
That said, it is a bit out of balance with the wedding ring, so if there was one a similar style but a bit less wide or would be perfect (imo)

Tearsofamermaid · 06/01/2024 13:43

In my opinion that’s a gorgeous ring and the .35 stone looks much bigger than that on your dainty fingers! However, I agree with others that the band is much too chunky.

Castellanos · 06/01/2024 13:47

I think it needs to be of similar width to your wedding band, or balance it as the poster above has done with something more delicate on either side (which looks beautiful!). I think it's just a little bit too wide for your hand, but the style will look beautiful once it's balanced.

junebugalice · 06/01/2024 13:48

I think it’s lovely on you. But jewellery is so personal that you should go with your gut on it. You seem to have always loved this style and it’s great you have found this ring and it’s a good price too. It all checks out in terms of paperwork etc so I would suggest you follow your heart on this one!

lovescats3 · 06/01/2024 13:54

It looks lovely

Fitandfree · 06/01/2024 13:55

I like it, but would wear it on it's own. The other looks lovely, but I too am a lover of chunky rings, and like the dexign if your favourite. It has to feel right as well as look right, or it will sit in a box.

blackpanth · 06/01/2024 13:56

Second pic looks much better x
