Does this ring look good on me? Tiffany Etoile "engagement" ring

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 11:23

I loved the Tiffany Etoile engagement ring when we got engaged 15 years ago, but couldn't afford it. Went with a generic sticky-uppy prong setting, looked lovely but I could never get used to wearing it (sensory issues, also I am clumsy with a hands-on job). Eventually sold it and just wore my plain platinum wedding ring.

DH suggested getting an anniversary ring. I'm not keen on eternity rings, and in my browsing, found a few Etoiles (now long discontinued) for sale.

I've tried one on and it's so smooth and comfortable - it's 0.35ct in platinum. I love it. It's got all its paperwork, had it checked out in Tiffany with the owner, it's a great price. But I have zero sense of style so am not sure if it looks awful or nice, if the diamond looks too small and the band too big, etc. I'd be very grateful for opinions from you stylish people. Honesty is welcome! Thank you.

Edit: argh sorry for my giant hand. I can't resize. My ring size is actually small (H1/2 UK).

Love it and it really suits you

itsmyp4rty · 06/01/2024 12:47

The combination of the two rings doesn't work together. The wedding band makes the engagement ring look so chunky. In the second picture the two rings match and so it looks much better.

If you want the thicker engagement ring then I think you need to change or lose the wedding ring.

Shinyandnew1 · 06/01/2024 12:48

I like the slimmer second ring you’ve listed-it goes with your fingers and existing wedding ring.

I think if you are going to go with the overly chunky solitaire, you’d need a new wedding ring-one that matched.

Topee · 06/01/2024 12:48

I really like it’s me think the Etoile design is very practical. I think it will look different once it has been resized. I think the comments about chunkiness are partially because it’s too big for your finger.

You have very pretty hands!

Fannysmygranny · 06/01/2024 12:50

I think it looks too big for you. The engagement ring should traditionally be above the wedding ring because the wedding ring shouldn't be taken off iir. Usually the band on a wedding ring was wider. I think it could look better but if you like it maybe get it sized down or get an eternity ring as a spacer

muddyford · 06/01/2024 12:50

Looks good but I would get my wedding ring made wider so the proportions are better.

WombatChocolate · 06/01/2024 12:50

Lots of people choose an engagement ring without considering the wedding ring that will go with it and how they will sit and look together. Really they need to be chosen and considered as a pair.

For you OP, you’re looking at another engagement ring after you’ve got the wedding ring. The width of the wedding band influences what will look good with it. In my view the Tiffany ring is too wide with it. Alone or with a different wedding band it would look okay probably. Although as others have said, it’s fairly chunky and 2 chunky rings on slim fingers often don’t look the best.

To look it’s best it probably needs a wider wedding band and bigger fingers. Given you’ve got the wedding band you have (and which suits your hands) it’s probably not the ring for you in terms of best looks. But, if you love it, wear it anyway!

Thank you all, I appreciate the honesty! To answer some questions:

The original prongy setting is long gone. I have tried prong set rings since and I just can't get used to them. I love the look so I wish I could. I don't know, maybe I would if I persevered...? Here's a picture with a similarly sized Tiffany classic setting. It's more of the usual look I see around, but to me it felt flimsy and insubstantial (and poke-y).

Yes it does need to be made smaller - Tiffany have confirmed they will do it for free, which is nice. It will still look pretty much the same from the top though as the width of the ring doesn't reduce.

Good point about no-one noticing in real life 😉

Edited

Much prefer the etoile

This is a perfectly ok ring, but it’s dull. The etoile has character.

WildCherryBlossom · 06/01/2024 12:51

I really like the ring. I love chunky jewellery.it looks really pretty on your hand too, If it's too big I would consider wearing it on the middle finger instead.

Also try putting it on before your wedding band as other PPs have suggested.

Vicliz24 · 06/01/2024 12:54

I love it and when it's been resized it will be perfect

Fannysmygranny · 06/01/2024 12:55

If it's not your actual engagement ring, I agree, wear it on another finger! An eternity ring the same width as your wedding ring would fit better on the same finger

WilloTheWispy · 06/01/2024 12:56

Makiwa · 06/01/2024 12:37

I like it. Try swapping the rings around on your finger. The bigger ring on first should give a better overall balanced look.

Yes - I was going to say this, but the Tiffany ring on first then the wedding band. I think they’ll look way better that way round. I really like the chunky ring. It’s far more interesting than every other bog standard solitaire. It’s different!

Poppies26 · 06/01/2024 12:56

I have this same ring as my engagement ring. My fingers are smaller than yours size I and I think it looks fine. My ring has never looked too big on my finger to me.

MimiSunshine · 06/01/2024 12:56

Do you like it on you? If yes then get it, no one else is going to even look at it with more than a passing glance.

also I agree with others, swap them around so your wedding ring is ‘on top’. I wear my engagement ring first then wedding band as I think it looks better like that and more ‘complete’ somehow.
a friend tried to tell me it was incorrect but I just said ‘according to what rule?’

SiobhanSharpe · 06/01/2024 12:57

I really like your original choice, it suits you. After it has been re-sized you can decide whether you want a different wedding band or not.
(I think it will probably be fine, widths of th bands don't absolutely have to match. Comfort is important! )

decisionssmecisions · 06/01/2024 12:58

I have same size fingers as you & prefer thin bands

liveforsummer · 06/01/2024 13:03

Personally I love it but it's the comparison to wedding band that's not quite right. How does it look switched round so the diamond ring on first? Or would you considered wearing one of the rings on a different finger?

MotherOfHouseplants · 06/01/2024 13:07

In both of the photos the first ring overshadows your wedding ring. Possibly consider wearing it on your right hand, or on its own as a new wedding band?

Mostlyoblivious · 06/01/2024 13:09

It’s what makes you happy at the end of the day. You need to work out if you still absolutely love that style or are lusting after it as you couldn’t have it but may actually not love it so much after all this time.

Worriedmum79 · 06/01/2024 13:09

When we ordered my wedding band, the jeweller suggested I go very slightly thicker than my engagement ring (didn’t agree initially but glad I went with his expertise!) so I also agree it’s too chunky. But whatever you like of course!

PrimalLass · 06/01/2024 13:09

I think it's lovely - just get it resized.

BreatheAndFocus · 06/01/2024 13:09

No IMO because the band is too wide and that looks weird with the size of the diamond. The second picture you posted is better. The first pic is bulky and almost cheap-looking (although I’m sure it’s not).

randomstress · 06/01/2024 13:10

I had a similar dilemma last year and ended up using a larger, flatter sparkly wedding band and putting both my traditional engagement ring and platinum wedding band away.

Like you I have a soft spot for Tiffany but don't love wearing rings and have a messy job. It might be worth visiting a n actual store and trying on their full range just to confirm what you do like best.

Neighbours87 · 06/01/2024 13:11

Do You like it OP? Engagement rings are very personal. I think my ring is the most beautiful ring in the world and I know lots of my friends think the same about theirs. If you love it go for it

avocadotofu · 06/01/2024 13:12

I agree with most other posters, the second ring looks oodles better!
