Does this ring look good on me? Tiffany Etoile "engagement" ring

DogFish614 · 06/01/2024 11:23

I loved the Tiffany Etoile engagement ring when we got engaged 15 years ago, but couldn't afford it. Went with a generic sticky-uppy prong setting, looked lovely but I could never get used to wearing it (sensory issues, also I am clumsy with a hands-on job). Eventually sold it and just wore my plain platinum wedding ring.

DH suggested getting an anniversary ring. I'm not keen on eternity rings, and in my browsing, found a few Etoiles (now long discontinued) for sale.

I've tried one on and it's so smooth and comfortable - it's 0.35ct in platinum. I love it. It's got all its paperwork, had it checked out in Tiffany with the owner, it's a great price. But I have zero sense of style so am not sure if it looks awful or nice, if the diamond looks too small and the band too big, etc. I'd be very grateful for opinions from you stylish people. Honesty is welcome! Thank you.

Edit: argh sorry for my giant hand. I can't resize. My ring size is actually small (H1/2 UK).

I think it's lovely. My only issue is that the band looks too wide for your finger, but I think that's because it actually does need to be resized? Once it is I think that the band will look more in proportion with your wedding ring.

Disclaimer: I love chunky jewellery so am probably biased.

Oaktree55 · 06/01/2024 13:58

Too chunky

Themountainwithsnowonit · 06/01/2024 13:59

OP would you be able to swap the rings round so the one you are considering is underneath your wedding band, and post a photo? I think it may look completely different like that.

Girlattheback · 06/01/2024 13:59

I think it’s lovely. I have a very similar engagement ring and tiny hand, my wedding band is the same width as the band on the diamond engagement ring which I think looks better. I think you should upgrade your wedding band to match. 😁

margotrose · 06/01/2024 14:00

I don't like how it looks with the wedding band, but I do think it would look lovely on its' own.

Thank you all, I appreciate the honesty! To answer some questions:

The original prongy setting is long gone. I have tried prong set rings since and I just can't get used to them. I love the look so I wish I could. I don't know, maybe I would if I persevered...? Here's a picture with a similarly sized Tiffany classic setting. It's more of the usual look I see around, but to me it felt flimsy and insubstantial (and poke-y).

Yes it does need to be made smaller - Tiffany have confirmed they will do it for free, which is nice. It will still look pretty much the same from the top though as the width of the ring doesn't reduce.

Good point about no-one noticing in real life 😉

Edited

I'd get one made exactly as I wanted to be honest

You'll get a better stone than the Tiffany one

bluedelphiniums · 06/01/2024 14:01

Totally love it.

piscofrisco · 06/01/2024 14:02

I love it!

Mirabai · 06/01/2024 14:05

The first is too bulky, the second looks much better and more elegant but if you don’t like it then neither are right. Keep looking.

I’ve no idea what value of rings you’re looking at (can’t tell) but this is my favourite jeweller with a wide range of different styles. Some super pricey but others very reasonable.

Rings – Bentley & Skinner – The Mayfair antique and bespoke jewellery shop in the heart of London

Rings have endured fashions like no other item of jewellery. They have been continuously worn throughout history either as tokens of love, or to display political, professional, and social status. Rings can be traced back to the Ancient Sumerian civili...

I have the etoile (in just over .6 carat) and the matching wedding band. I love them! So easy to wear…..and yes chunky, but I love chunky jewellery. Had them 17 years and love them as much today as I did then ❤️

Poppies26, I love your 3-ring combo.

I have just had my engagement ring replaced, as the stone fell out and was lost. I was gutted, as it was a lovely diamond; 0.52 emerald cut (pure diamond) on a plat band. I have a very, very plain thin wedding band in platinum too. For my 25th wedding anniversary, I am getting have negotiated a ring very similar to your 3rd ring (nearest knuckle) which I have already chosen. I love how you have this, your engagement ring, and then another diamond ring. It looks gorgeous.

I seriously dislike my wedding ring, and think it looks like I've pulled it off a cheap keyring ungrateful. Truth is, we got engaged and married when we were skint, and are a lot better off now, so I'd like to have something special on my finger.

I'm considering trading in my wedding ring. Is that all wrong, and bad luck?

SecondHandFurniture · 06/01/2024 14:10

I love it but I'd replace the wedding ring with it rather than wear both.

I like it. Try swapping the rings around on your finger. The bigger ring on first should give a better overall balanced look.

I agree with this.

verybookish · 06/01/2024 14:12

The second picture looks infinitely better, in my opinion. Much more elegant and more in line with your wedding ring and hands. But - personal taste! It’s your hand!

Thank you xx

Most of my family members have replaced their original wedding rings and some have a whole new set. I don't think it's unlucky.
This engagement ring is one of three I have - from the same marriage!! It is the one I wear the most though!

Peony15 · 06/01/2024 14:17

I love the Etoile ring on you . It has a solid, tactile, understated , classy look and feel. I'm not British and it's exactly the type of jewellery many of us wear on the continent. Some wear it on one hand ! wedding ring on other, so not necessarily combined.
Think the design is a called a suspense design.
I see a lot of jewellery ( work with the public ) and so bored of everybody wearing the same prongy diamonds sticking out, highest ones are American designs, they take prong heights to a new level 😆.
This ring would instantly make me look again, it stands out of the crowd of same designs many wear.
You could be a handmodel for rings , wish I had such beautiful hands and slender long fingers.

Timetolose3 · 06/01/2024 14:20

I voted no but think it looks better in the second picture . If you love it that’s what matters

Crazycatlady79 · 06/01/2024 14:23

I like the first one, but I think it would look better with the wedding band on top.

pikkumyy77 · 06/01/2024 14:26

Flip the rings on your finger snd put the bulkier one on below the wedding band. That will give a tapering effect that will reduce the sense that the ring is too bulky.

DGPP · 06/01/2024 14:35

I think it’s lovely

TheWonderSpot · 06/01/2024 14:36

It's beautiful and looks so elegant on you your finger

BlueGrey1 · 06/01/2024 14:36

Everyone has different taste in these things and it Dosen’t mean they are right or wrong.
You are the one who is going to be wearing it so you need to love it, Dosen’t really matter what others think

liveforsummer · 06/01/2024 14:37

Poppies26 · 06/01/2024 13:39

Have attached picture!

Ah the 3rd ring of another width really helps. Looks lovely!

Fannysmygranny · 06/01/2024 14:41

I agree turning them around would look better aesthetically, but its not that way for practical and traditional reasons. You shouldn't ever need to take off your wedding ring ideally, if your engagement ring gets in the way you can if it's on top but it's not an engagement ring (coming first) by the sounds of it. I think we are in different times where we do what we like. The ring you wear on what finger is your decision and doesn't affect society one bit. You do what you like with your own fingers ✌️the diamond one looked a bit too big against the wedding band
