Do you have your nails done?

Do you go to a salon on a regular basis and get acrylic extensions or gel overlays?
Or do you just have natural nails?

It’s interesting to see how people think that they are an expensive waste of money but at the same time make you look poor.

I'm not defending judging peoplein that way, but it's not an unusual concept tbh. There are lots of expensive things which are or have been very fashionable among less affluent demographics, sometimes to the point that wealthier people stop wearing them for fear of looking 'common'.

Studswagger · 22/09/2023 15:03

@AllProperTeaIsTheft i know, I just think it’s bonkers!

No I don't. I think colour on nails look cheap and trashy.

Aren't you a delight 😂

sunglassesonthetable · 22/09/2023 15:31

I have just had short coloured gel nails done. Only like short on me. And I am in love tbh.

They look so great.I keep staring at my nails which have always looked crap . Keen gardener.

Is BIAB the same as Builder Gel ? Sounds like it does work from reading this thread.

wineandmaltesershappyme · 22/09/2023 15:55

@LubaLuca thank you that's good to know, might give the gel version a try then

I've started using the semi cured gel strips at home, and they're an absolute revelation. So easy, look great, last a couple of weeks and they come off easily and don't damage my nails.

Can you let me know which brand you use? I'd like to give these a try!

Yes it does work, it's brilliant. I keep my nails short but builder gel is the only way I could grow them. I tend to go in phases, I'll have builder gel and love it and keep getting it done for months but then after about 5-6 months I usually feel like my nails need a break so tend to have nothing over the winter and nice nails for the summer.

My natural nails are soft and weak and just generally shit.

PurpleWhirple · 22/09/2023 18:52

Sorry meant to say that BIAB is builder in a bottle, the same as builder gel

Barnowlsandbluebells · 22/09/2023 18:56

I had Biosculpture gel on with barely any breaks for about 10 years then had them taken off just before Covid. Now I prefer normal polish as there's more flexibility. My own nails grow very fast and are long and in good condition so I can get a week between manicures. Very few people have nice natural nails in my opinion.

LittleObe · 22/09/2023 19:06

Used to. Always got gel extensions because I was a nail biter. Broke the habit (well I got dental aligners so can't bite) and grew my nails our. Got gel once (overlay) and my nails were so bad after.

I cut them all of, started again and now just paint them

DarkSpark · 22/09/2023 19:32

BIAB every 3-4 weeks. I used to be a biter and it's really helped me stop. Plus it's something I enjoy, a couple of hours to do something that's a totally unnecessary indulgence for myself. It's really the only beauty thing I do regularly. Just got them freshly done this morning and I love them.

Lottapianos · 21/09/2023 15:52

I do my own. Manicure once a week, pedicure every 2 weeks. I might get a professional mani every few months because they do a much better job with my cuticles than I do

Same here.

My nails are strong and grow like weeds luckily.

MoYou, but there seem to be a few retailers and I can't imagine they vary that much.

I’ve just had my biab fully removed after 3 consecutive applications. I would never do it again, my nails are destroyed. Top layer ruined, peeling, rough and thin.

They look amazing when they’re done, so glossy and fancy but underneath they’re ruined, think of them like turkey teeth, fake on the surface but natural nails ruined/covered up underneath.

See I don't find this at all, I think a huge amount depends on the removal and skill of technician. I have mine every two weeks without a break and the only time they are weak is if I bite or peel them off.

When my technician removes them she never takes it down to the natural nail fully so they aren't thinned out at all.

slithytoveisascientist · 24/09/2023 01:04

@MamaDollyorJesus 😂
Tbf with sustained biab I could get my natural nails to look like that in about six months

That's poor technique. Bad techs grind the nail down each time. Of course they are left weak. My tech only fully removes every three infills and she barely buffs. My nails are exactly the same when they grow out as befire

Meowandthen · 24/09/2023 10:52

Gel manicure and standard pedi every three or so weeks. They are not long and stay perfect for work (often client facing where I need to look polished) even though I garden and swim regularly.

It’s not expensive where I live and this basic maintenance ends up saving me time as I can ignore them for at least three weeks.

Get you Mrs Judgy!

We don’t all have sparkly scarlet talons. 🤣🤣

And those of us who do sometimes really don’t give a stuff about other people liking them or not!

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 24/09/2023 19:43

I did when I was working in the city and before kids.

Now I work from home and have kids so seem to be always cleaning so I keep them filed pretty short and might put apply some nail varnish if I have time.

I don't like long nails at all, I always think they must be dirty. I don't like nails with sparkles and glitter stuck on to them either.

My choices would be French manicure, red or dark navy/purple.

Losttheplotsometimeago · 24/09/2023 19:45

You can't have really, really clean hands/nails AND fancy nails.

JohnNolan · 24/09/2023 19:45

I do my own gel nails every 2 weeks. Love the look but can't afford it anymore so I've got my own kit - love it

It's great, isn't it? I just use the Mylee paint-on remover stuff. The kit has more than paid for itself.
