Do you go to a salon on a regular basis and get acrylic extensions or gel overlays?
Or do you just have natural nails?

No, I like the look of short, clean, bare nails best - sometimes I’ll buff them to give them a bit of a shine, but not often. I just don’t really think about them that much. I use polish on my toes to hide a gross fungal nail in the summer.

I do find The assumptions that getting nails done means long and fake.

If I don't get mine done they are like paper and split constantly and I rip my cuticles.

They're never long and I don't think they look fake, but maybe I'm deluded

Because they assume we're all kicking about with nails like this 😂

That's exactly what my hands look like 🤣

I used to compulsively bite my nails until they bled and would get infected. I also have trichotillomania so this transferred to my nails. Getting them done every 2 weeks is the only thing that stops this.

MamaDollyorJesus · 22/09/2023 10:51

@SoRainbowRhythms I'd gouge an eye out putting my contacts in with nails like that 😂

Studswagger · 22/09/2023 10:54

@SoRainbowRhythms mine too!

They don't really 🤣 contact lenses are my nemesis when they get too long too! And it hate it when they tap on my phone screen.

Studswagger · 22/09/2023 08:02

Yeah, you do have to be careful to clean them well, I do mine with a hard bristle toothbrush (bought for the job obviously!).

Oh yes! I have a nail brush just in case (natural bristles two sides), but I do use a natural mauve colour, or the Essie dupe for Dior Glow, so any dirt would be visible as my polish is translucent.

Gels religiously every 3 weeks, I am moving abroad in a few months and dreading finding a new place I’ve gone to the same lady for 14 years!

also doesn’t ruin nails - couldn’t have done during covid - once they had come off
only took a few weeks and back to usual strength.

They don't ruin nails unless the tech soaks whole hand in acetone, natural nails have e file used on them, the products aren't CND.

Never

Heartbreaktuna · 22/09/2023 11:56

No I don't. I think colour on nails look cheap and trashy.

fetchacloth · 22/09/2023 11:59

Just natural nails for me. Saves a heap of money and is practical for gardening, etc.
I'm fortunate that my nails are quite strong, rarely break, and grow quickly.
On a weekly basis, I file them to keep their shape followed by a buff and shine board (Margaret Dabbs).
Years ago a friend of mine had gel nails and developed an infection under two of the nails. The sight of this was enough to put me off gel nails forever 🙄.

Yes @LollipopChaos my hairdresser was scraping my scalp when washing my hair! I had to tell her to stop- she had no idea. Those look nice @anomaly2 but that’s what I do myself.

Yes but if I do this myself with regular polish it lasts all of 2 days without a chip if I'm lucky. By getting these gels they will last until I want them removed because there us too much grow out. It's lower maintenance for me. No chipping. No natural nails splitting it flaking. No caught edges. Just perfect nails. Once every 3 weeks and then I don't even have to think about them. I keep them short so after 3 weeks they are not ridiculously long and I keep the colour natural so the grow out is minimally noticeable. More than 3 weeks and the grow out looks bad to me.

You think these look fake and awful?

You may not like people's answers I'm afraid. But each to their own and if you like them, who cares.

Not really. I haven't read any negative comments and if there was a rogue one I really wouldn't care. They make my life so much easier. I can't be arsed with doing my nails every few days. I'm not that sort who enjoys doing that. The filing and being careful so they don't split or flake. I just do these once every three weeks and forget about them.

Rainallnight · 22/09/2023 12:53

I always have dipping powder (like gels) done on my short, natural nails. I’m a terrible biter, and this is the only way I don’t bite. But nor do I want long fake nails.

I am so, so happy with how they look. I’m about a million times more polished looking.

JamSandle · 22/09/2023 12:54

No. I have my natural nails.

wineandmaltesershappyme · 22/09/2023 13:51

Nope, i used to but the lady who did them moved and i never found anywhere else (i don't drive) plus the cost, i have blonde hair so have that done every 6 weeks, can't afford nails too unless i sacrificed something else such as drinks with friends. If i ever go back brown i may switch from hairdressers to nails :-)
I use nail wraps at home instead and i LOVE them, easy to do and can get 2 weeks from a set if i look after them (such as wear gloves for washing up)

I've started using the semi cured gel strips at home, and they're an absolute revelation. So easy, look great, last a couple of weeks and they come off easily and don't damage my nails.

How do you remove them? I use the normal polish wraps that soak off in warm water.

Lndnmummy · 22/09/2023 14:25

I do mine religiously every two weeks. BIAB £70 each time. I know, its an eye watering amount. I don't drink, I don't smoke, we don't buy take aways. We don't have a cleaner.

Its interesting for me to read the responses. There is definitely a reverse snobbery around this. Pearl clutching oh my god acrylic nails look so fake, I am way to cultured and refined to worry about nails, etc.
And then the obligatory, why should women feel the need to when men don't bla bla bla.

Abit like the people feeling more refined for drinking red wine rather than white, for watching BBC instead of ITV etc.

I so my nails and I am a feminist. I can be both. I do both. And I most definitely do not look down on fellow women who like the claw acrylic look. I cheer for them. They look fabulous, on them!

Dip the pointy end of an orange stick in nail polish remover and gently poke it under the edge. They just lift off.

Oblomov23 · 22/09/2023 14:47

I only have my nails painted (and I mean just a rough buff up and nail varnish) and a pedicure occasionally, say for wedding / party etc. But they do so much damage to my nails I've decided / been advised to stop going.

Indeed. I find it very amusing to be told that I’m doing my nails because ‘men’… I’m a dyke, I wouldn’t notice or care if men find my nails attractive!

It’s interesting to see how people think that they are an expensive waste of money but at the same time make you look poor.
