Do you have your nails done?

Do you go to a salon on a regular basis and get acrylic extensions or gel overlays?
Or do you just have natural nails?

I can't leave mine for three weeks - after about 10 days there's a big stripe of growth so I normally soak off then have a break.

MaitlandGirl · 21/09/2023 22:21

I get mine done every 4 weeks (acrylic tips with infills) and I’m really happy with them.

i don’t have them super long and since I’ve been getting them done I’ve not broken, chipped or split a nail.

I’m my DWs full time carer and this is my ‘me time’. I can’t go to the hairdressers as it takes too long and I can’t arrange anyone else to be with my wife for that long.

Got these done yesterday and I’m really happy with them.

Nope, don't like the look of fakes or fancy nail art and I'm capable of mani/pedi/painting my own in one shade. Would much rather spend the money on hair or clothes.

sandstormboots · 21/09/2023 22:28

No. My nails are natural and short. I very occasionally wear varnish, but not often. I don’t like the look of long or very artificial looking nails.

Same here

KnittedCardi · 21/09/2023 22:36

No. Never. I have really good strong and white nails naturally. I don't do anything other than cut and file when they get too long.

Matildahoney · 21/09/2023 23:01

I have BIAB every 3-4 weeks as I used to be a biter, so my own nails are really think and just break. It's the only thing that keeps them from breaking.
@MamaDollyorJesus my acrylics always used to break, chip, or peel, BIAB never does.

threecupsofteaminimum · 21/09/2023 23:03

Nope, can't be arsed.

MakeAListTheySaid · 21/09/2023 23:03

No, I don't like the look of long, painted, shiny or fake looking nails at all. Even the ones that are made to look more natural look fake and I just don't like that look.

Even if I did like them, they wouldn't work with my daily life anyway.

MakeAListTheySaid · 21/09/2023 23:06

You think these look fake and awful?

You may not like people's answers I'm afraid. But each to their own and if you like them, who cares.

truou · 22/09/2023 03:01

No as it's so expensive so not only can I not afford but also I think it's a massive waste of money even if I had the money. Also I find long nails so unhygienic. They hide so much behind them.
I always think it's odd how the women who are trying hardest to look so glam with the most gorgeous hands are actually the ones I would want touching my food the least

PauliesWalnuts · 21/09/2023 15:49

Nah - climbing wall and allotment means that there’s no point. I keep them short, stick a bit of polish on for special occasions and that’s it.

This and it saves me a fortune. I really don’t get why it’s attractive on women to make clearly fake nails costing £40 every few weeks whilst men a quicky clip and scrub (free) looks nice - why are our gender value so different as a society?

whatamess100 · 22/09/2023 03:16

I have short nails. I'd love them done at a salon, but i simply can't afford it, so over the last few years, I've brought myself a gel kit and added extra bits to my kit. I do my gels x2 a month, and i thoroughly enjoy spending an hour doing them while having a glass of wine.

I also found the odd time i have had gel at a salon they chip within 3 days but when i do my own, I can got 12 days easy.

PerfectMatch · 22/09/2023 03:17

Natural nails here.

Britneyfan · 22/09/2023 03:22

I have really nice nails naturally and I used to be brilliant at painting my own and friend’s nails before gel nails existed and I became a mum around the same time!

I LOVE gel/shellac type nails in bright colours but have only ever been able to afford to get them done for Christmas and summer holidays! Love the look of them but also the feel and like others I definitely look and feel that bit more groomed and put together when my nails have been done. I feel like these days I easily look very scruffy somehow but this really helps without me having to spend hours on hair and make-up, clothes and jewellery, wear uncomfortable shoes etc. Like others I do find my nails are a little weak afterwards and I feel they need a bit of time to recover.

These days it seems like a lot of faff and hassle to bother painting them for just a few days before they chip when gel nails last so well. And for a while there I got really freaked out reading about the potential allergy stuff and related health risks. However I have read loads about it now and think I’ve got a good understanding of how to try to avoid this. I know they say one thing is not to do your own but it’s so hard to afford the salons these days and lots of my local ones are I’m sure dodgy anyway. So I have just got myself a Mylee lamp and kit with HEMA free gels to try doing my own at home so I can maybe do them a bit more often. I’ll still allow myself decent time in between to let my nails recover though.

I was tempted by the new BIAB stuff though, it does look really good, almost (not quite!) as good as gels to my eyes.

Britneyfan · 22/09/2023 03:25

@anomaly2 I think your nails look gorgeous though too natural looking for my tastes lol! I like neon bright colours!

SchadenfreudeIstMeinMittelname · 22/09/2023 04:07

No, I never saw the point and can't stand the smell of nail varnish.

Flutterbye22 · 22/09/2023 07:15

Gel overlay once every 3 weeks usually!

If I was your friend I would defo pay you to do my nails. I love a bit of colour it's just so expensive!

Yeah, you do have to be careful to clean them well, I do mine with a hard bristle toothbrush (bought for the job obviously!).

SmallestInTheClass · 22/09/2023 08:56

Never, I dress in casual clothes all the time and I think it would look strange to have such polished nails. I think they look great with a smart outfit but think they'd look cheap if I had them with my jeans and hoodies.

slithytoveisascientist · 22/09/2023 09:02

I do find The assumptions that getting nails done means long and fake.

If I don't get mine done they are like paper and split constantly and I rip my cuticles.

They're never long and I don't think they look fake, but maybe I'm deluded

They don’t look fake at all, they are really pretty!

Mine are obviously acrylic/fake but I like them that way.

LubaLuca · 22/09/2023 09:11

I've started using the semi cured gel strips at home, and they're an absolute revelation. So easy, look great, last a couple of weeks and they come off easily and don't damage my nails.

Intensiv14 · 22/09/2023 09:21

I’ve just had my biab fully removed after 3 consecutive applications. I would never do it again, my nails are destroyed. Top layer ruined, peeling, rough and thin.

They look amazing when they’re done, so glossy and fancy but underneath they’re ruined, think of them like turkey teeth, fake on the surface but natural nails ruined/covered up underneath.

PinotPony · 22/09/2023 09:23

I used to have acrylics every few weeks but got fed up of the cost and time.

Now I just use Hard as Nails and I have lovely strong, long nails, despite not wearing gloves for gardening and DIY etc.
