Today has put me off floral dresses 😩

I live on the south coast and had a day in the nearest big town today. I had been feeling pretty pleased with the floral dresses I'd bought ready for summer, but after wandering around today I've just totally gone off them. I just feel saturated with seeing floral dresses all day. I love a floral dress as much as the next person but they all started to blend into one, a uniform of floral dresses often paired with the same kind of shoe, it was all a bit much in the end. Anyone else feeling the same?

Where I am [hardly a haute couture kind of place] we have dubbed it "the anything goes summer".
There is the occasional floaty dress along with everything else. And yes, with the white trainers.

It will be a dress of it's two year era.
Films made last year and this will feature them.

IhearyouClemFandango · 02/06/2023 06:55

I love to see people in beautiful prints. I can’t do florals or ditsy type prints unless quite large or modern, as they’re just not me, but I do wear abstract prints and plain dresses a lot.

YukoandHiro · 02/06/2023 06:57

I like the look but I've never worn it because I'm short and these kind of volumous dresses make me look like a child. I prefer a jumpsuit.

Shirt dresses with a split seem to be in this year, often with animal prints. I have a couple. I am guilt of wearing them with a denim jacket though.

Terven · 02/06/2023 06:59

I hate them. I don’t own a single dress atm. There’s nothing I like in the shops. I prefer fitted clothes, everything is stretchy . I can’t even find suit trousers anymore. 🤷‍♀️

Notquitethere60 · 02/06/2023 07:00

If you want a uniform what about Breton stripe tops with cropped trousers and trainer/ adventure sandals. Equally valid and practical.
Wear what’s comfortable; nobody really cares.

What kind of dresses do you mean? Do you have examples? I must have been living under a rock! 😂

Are you a fellow northerner? 😁
I have idea of this concept either.
Am familiar with ankle grazing plain vest dresses and sandals?

I live in shorts and trainers during summer, but would wear a dress at someone's summer wedding I suppose..

FannythePinkFlamingo · 02/06/2023 07:04

I love my floral dresses and am proudly wearing another of my ever growing collection today. They are bright and colourful and cheer up my day. I don't care that everyone else is wearing them either.

maranella · 02/06/2023 07:05

Yeah, I don't wear them, because I'm sick of seeing them. There was actually an article in, I think, The Times last week where the fashion editor was bemoaning the fact that it's the fashion that just won't die!

For men who are really into fashion, there's important detail in that jeans and tshirt look though, and they can discern current/not current. The shapes, the brands, the shoes etc. My young adult who's into that stuff is constantly churning his wardrobe.

There are 2 styles of jeans - tight and not tight , they're all just tubes of denim.

maranella · 02/06/2023 07:07

@Rummykitten @Justleaveitblankthen Google 'Holly Willoughby flowery dress' and you'll see what everyone is talking about. They have been EVERYWHERE in the south of England for the past probably four summers. Flowery dress, short denim jacket, white trainers. It's like a uniform.

byvirtue · 02/06/2023 07:08

I have a wardrobe full of midi/maxi floral dresses of various styles, I love them. However I pulled out my denim jacket for the first time this year and did not like the look at all with any of them. Definitely over the denim jacket look.

LlynTegid · 02/06/2023 07:10

I get where you are coming from OP. Same as about ten years ago when plain colour dresses became very widely worn.

There are far worse summer looks though.

MissDynamite23 · 02/06/2023 07:12

I wore a long dress - not floral but leopard print in floral colours - to a comedy show very much aimed at women. It was the first time in my almost 43 years that I felt like I’d shown up in uniform. So many (middle aged) women in long dresses, denim jackets, boxy small handbag with thick strap. It was mildly horrifying, I’m not going to lie. It has made me rethink my summer wardrobe!!

Duckskitbank · 02/06/2023 05:40

@Rummykitten watch some footage of Chelsea Flower Show and you’ll soon get the idea. I was looking out for some friends who were there but it was impossible! Like Where’s Wally for middle aged women.

Yes! It was a sea of long flowing flowery dresses although most not wearing white trainers.

Alazne58 · 02/06/2023 07:20

Been wearing floral dresses many decades way before it became trendy.
Do not have any trainers. Only one 33 yr old jeans jacket but never worn it with floral dresses. Wear cardigan or scarves shawls with the floral dresses. Comfortable looks like a birkenstock due to OA. I have a collection of midi and maxi floral dresses.
One maxi abstract print in citrus neon colors.

Thomasina79 · 02/06/2023 07:20

I love most of them but they must be cotton, with sleeves and definitely no Bardot shoulders. I especially hate the flounces on the bottom of some of them. I am guilty of wearing a denim jacket over a ditsy print though I don’t own a pair of white trainers! (Perhaps I should?)

Girasoli · 02/06/2023 07:21

I love floral dresses, but I live somewhere 'cool' so I don't see them about so often - I see lots of 3/4 length skirts and colourful dungarees instead from locals, and the language exchange students are all still in jeans and tracksuit bottoms.

mondaytosunday · 02/06/2023 07:22

It isn't a fashion or a trend but a classic combo. Like jeans and white t shirt/white shirt. Far better seeing floral dresses than ubiquitous gym gear or slouchy joggers and hoodies.

DontTouchMyMug · 02/06/2023 07:24

I find this thread so strange! It's never crossed my mind that too many women are wearing the same outfit (surely they are all different dresses? Different shapes, patterns and colours?) And it's never crossed my mind that I might stop wearing something because others do.

Mind you I wear leggings all the time so I'll just place my own head into the S&B guillotine and be done with it.

If you've stopped wearing floral dresses what else are you wearing that looks 'fresher' (and that is comfortable and cool and practical). I love ideas for summer wear.

NOTANUM · 02/06/2023 07:15

Yes! It was a sea of long flowing flowery dresses although most not wearing white trainers.

Also a sea of white Panama hats 😂

Pteryl · 02/06/2023 07:28

But floral is just a fabric print. It’s like saying ‘I’m so over green dresses’. There are so many styles, prints and varieties of dresses, I wouldn’t rule out floral print itself just because maxi/midi tiered dresses were fashionable years ago.

GoodVibesHere · 02/06/2023 07:29

Cornchip · 02/06/2023 01:43

I agree. It’s always the same combination of midi floral dress, denim jacket, sunglasses and veja trainers or sandals.

It’s just really overdone at this point.

I still wear a lot of floral dresses myself but I have a more “edgy/grungy” style so it gives off a different vibe. I think it’s as much about the cuts of items rather than the items themselves as well, which makes all the difference.

I do love a floral dress in winter as well though, as long as the colours aren’t overly summery. You don’t see them half as often then and you get double the wear which is great.

You're wearing the same floral dresses as everyone else but on you it's a different vibe because you have an edgy style?! No, it's still just another floral dress Grin

There's nothing wrong with the look I guess, but I don't like the way that all the shops churn out the same stuff so there's a lack of choices around but tons and tons of floral dresses.

LunaTheCat · 02/06/2023 07:33

I love dresses .. floral or otherwise. It’s the way you wear them. In summer.. with birkies, no jacket in site but love scarfs . Always cotton.. never polyester. Cos does great summer dresses.

MintJulia · 02/06/2023 07:35

It isn't the floral print, so much as all the layers and frills. 😕

I have one floral dress, short sleeved, fit and flare but falls straight to low calf, in high quality crisp cool cotton. No polyester, no difficult-to-iron viscose.

Worn with a pair of ballet flats or a pair of low wedges, it's perfect for hot days.

dudsville · 02/06/2023 07:41

It's a fine choice, but i really dislike a ditsy print, even Its name rubs me up the wrong way.
