Today has put me off floral dresses 😩

I live on the south coast and had a day in the nearest big town today. I had been feeling pretty pleased with the floral dresses I'd bought ready for summer, but after wandering around today I've just totally gone off them. I just feel saturated with seeing floral dresses all day. I love a floral dress as much as the next person but they all started to blend into one, a uniform of floral dresses often paired with the same kind of shoe, it was all a bit much in the end. Anyone else feeling the same?

Jeez @Thepleasureofyourcompany I was wearing the SAME as everyone else. I was not sneering! We were laughing at ourselves. I was singing the praises of comfy dresses and shoes.

Covetthee · 02/06/2023 08:25

if you like it, wear it! Who cares?

no one says anything about winter uniform of jumper and jeans, so why is this any different?

i can’t always pull off the look which is a shame as I like it, but i love seeing all the colourful dresses in the spring/summer on other women, and no matter what size or age they are, they all look lovely.

it just something that works for most people.

SeverineSix · 02/06/2023 08:25

Alternatives to a denim jacket? a jersey blazer- slim fit- e.g. from Whistles?
A bomber cut jacket- again in jersey or a silk fabric. Both available in lots of different colours.
But really, the denim jackets the least of the issues. It's the floral dresses that i dislike.
I do cringe a bit when I see my peers in the floral dress/ white trainers/ denim jacket uniform. I suspect they are middle aged women (my peers) who think it makes them look 'girly' and then think the trainers and denim jacket are a surprising and original foil to the girliness- trying to give the outfit an 'edge' by pairing 'girly' with 'casual/sporty/androgyny'. It's become a cliche, a watered down version of what you might have seen in a fashion magazine 10 years ago of a model in a huge tulle skirt and a jumper and tough boots. And when it has spread through the entire female population, it is formulaic and tired.

gettingtherhymewrong · 02/06/2023 08:25

I dont own a single floral dress, not because I don't like them so much as I've never found one that suited me.

I don't notice so many people wearing them were I live, but I have seen lots of women in shorts in the recent hot weather.

Floral dresses at the Chelsea flower show, you say? I am amazed and shocked. Seriously, what is remotely funny or surprising about women wearing floral dresses to a flower show? It is like tittering when I wear boots to go hillwalking or jodphurs to ride in. It is totally appropriate and normal attire for the activity they are involved in.

Why do some women love to sneer and judge other women's perfectly innocuous and approproate clothes? As other posters have pointed out, men don't get this shit for their 'asexual' chinos and sensible shoes.

How was i sneering? I was wearing the same 'uniform'. And it was amusing. Lots of us thought so. We're allowed to laugh at ourselves. I said I'd rather see women in trainers than heels and that the dresses were comfy and cool. I'm a practical woman like yourself by the sounds of it.

According to the photo you posted the other day showing what you wore to Chelsea flower show… you wore a floral dress, a short jacket and trainers

so your post is baffling to say the least

genuinely baffled why you thought it was funny.

There's a reason so many women wear the 'uniform'. It works!
Thank you @Froffycoffee for actually reading and understanding my words!

Did you actually read their post? Or just the first line?

SpringNotSprung · 02/06/2023 08:28

A floral dress is my idea of heaven and has been since my Laura Ashley days began in about 1977. I have always had atbleast one in my cupboard.

faffadoodledo · 02/06/2023 08:29

Yes @Successstory82 and I acknowledged that I my post. I said that's what I wore! But thanks for being interested enough to look!
I love that dress and am wearing it again this weekend.

peachespeachespeaches · 02/06/2023 08:29

I feel the same way about all the "go-to" white trainers. Stan Smiths, AF1's etc. the blandest, most Coldplay of shoes.

DaaamnYoullDo · 02/06/2023 08:29

Wait what? We can wear white trainers with them?! I'm not good at stuff like this. I've been wearing my sandals, damn I'm excited I can wear trainers.
Tbh the commonplaceness of them has given me the confidence to wear them so I'm grateful, I like feeling like I fit in, I'm autistic, it doesn't happen much.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 02/06/2023 08:30

You can’t beat a long black/white/navy linen sun dress. Looks elegant with the right bag and sun hat/sunglasses.

Im 46 though and grew up with Laura Ashley flowery dresses so they always reminded me of my mum in the early 80’s.

PuppyMonkey · 02/06/2023 08:30

Oh, oh have they had their day now? I’ve hated the floral frilly look ever since it became a thing and have been waiting patiently for everyone to come to their senses.Grin

I know right, I got what you were saying! They've either just read the first line or are being purposefully obtuse- I can guess which. Me and 2 friends went to a wedding once in the same dresses, it was one of 'the dresses' a few years back that was all over the Internet and it wasn't haha funny but it was humorous- I read it that was what you meant as you were wearing the bloody same!

Salie68x · 02/06/2023 08:32

If we are meant to be buying more sustainable clothes, better quality and less of them, then fashion isn't going to change so frequently. So surely we are more likely to be wearing the same things for longer?
I'm middle aged and wear cotton dresses trainers and often a denim jacket.
Comfy practical, definitely not sexual , and just how I like it.

Successstory82 · 02/06/2023 08:20

The thought that some of your sneering and judging are mothers…. Is actually a bit disturbing.

Are mothers not allowed to have opinions different from yours? Disliking a certain middle aged fashion doesn't make us child abusers!!
Are mothers just supposed to be bland, opinionless, subservient, appeasing martyrs?

MorrisZapp · 02/06/2023 08:33

Once you've embraced a dress on a hot day you won't go back. The swish of moving air is bliss, and a glorious colour or print just adds to the breezy feel.

I've got a literal archive of denim jackets, from stages of my life and periods of fashion going from my original eighties pale Easy Jeans jacket to my perfectly soft Abercrombie jacket from ca 2000.

I love that I can pull one out and wear it again and again.

I don't wear any kind of trainer in summer as my feet get too hot but I love a sandal.

I'm not claiming to be edgy or groundbreaking with this kind of dressing, and I've laughed with friends and strangers at our similar outfits but until the world offers up some new kind of dressing as uplifting and practical as this, I'm sticking with it.

It couldn't possibly be that they find the floral dress/white trainers/denim jacket uniform comfortable and easy to wear could it? You are coming across as thinking yourself rather superior, you really aren't. Cringe away, I'm sure your peers couldn't care less.

GrinAndVomit · 02/06/2023 08:33

Since becoming a mum 6 years ago, floral dresses have become part of my “uniform”.

I have two main sections in my wardrobe, floral maxi dresses for the summer and floral tea dresses for the winter. I then accessorise and layer accordingly with tights, boots, sandals, jumpers, cardigans, leather jackets, denim jackets, bags, jewellery etc.

It makes getting ready quick, and simple but looks like I’ve made some effort. The colours brighten my mood. I’m glad to see more floral clothes choices in stores now.

Long live florals!

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 02/06/2023 08:34

Love a print dress and a pair of trainers. Not keen on a denim jacket, too hot and a bit ubiquitous.

Oh and I even wear them with white trainers in the summer if I’m going to be driving.

Cringe away, OP!

It isn't a fashion or a trend but a classic combo. Like jeans and white t shirt/white shirt. Far better seeing floral dresses than ubiquitous gym gear or slouchy joggers and hoodies.

This!!!!!!!

I really like the look. I like it because I feel dresses up a little, I feel comfortable, I feel feminine, I feel cool in warm weather, I actually feel confident in them too.... After all, what I wear is all about me, and not others are wearing or whether I look sexual to other people.

MorrisZapp · 02/06/2023 08:36

And fwiw I've never felt sexier than in a swishy dress! The compliments and smiles I get certainly beat my cropped jeans and breton top of 15 years ago when I looked like a sack of tatties despite being a young thing 😂

Yes because “sneering and judging” is the same as having an opinion

just like a bully would say “I’m just being honest”
