Today has put me off floral dresses 😩

I live on the south coast and had a day in the nearest big town today. I had been feeling pretty pleased with the floral dresses I'd bought ready for summer, but after wandering around today I've just totally gone off them. I just feel saturated with seeing floral dresses all day. I love a floral dress as much as the next person but they all started to blend into one, a uniform of floral dresses often paired with the same kind of shoe, it was all a bit much in the end. Anyone else feeling the same?

Currently in a playground in a fashionable bit of London and not a floral dress in sight. All wearing buttery trousers & fashionably underdressed 😂😂

I'm not sure many people, even in 'unfashionable' parts of the country, wear floral dresses to the playground.

DarkModeAvailable · 02/06/2023 16:49

Do you feel the same about blue jeans? Or do you just wear them? Wear what you want, forget what others are wearing. If you like those dresses and feel good wearing them then go ahead! Who cares about what’s trendy and what’s not.

I’d disagree. There’s an incredibly glamorous women here wearing an olive leather skirt and matching blouse. Now I feel underdressed for the park 😉

I was thinking more about this and now ive gone a bit deep. Forgive me.

Anyway, why is it when we see dresses everywhere there's this reaction of 'oh god, no!'? Is there something fundamentally wrong with dresses, say, unlike jeans?

We have been wearing jeans for decades, no one seems to have such a visceral reaction to them being everywhere. It never put anyone off buying more, or finding new ways to enjoy them.

I wonder if this is because dresses are synonymous in our culture with 'overt' femininity? Could there be some odd perceptions wriggling around in this that we are not fully conscious of? So when we adopt a traditionally male garment there's no criticism in the same way....

Just thoughts.

LittlePampelmouse · 02/06/2023 17:10

I am currently staying in an 'unfashionable' part of the country and most women are wearing leggings, or leggings as shorts. On hot days they wear cropped tops with them. Come to think of it I haven't seen any dress wearers here in a while. There are lots of dresses in the shops, at all price points, so I doubt it's an economic issue.

By unfashionable, I mean shit.Grin

I remember when most women were wearing beige linen wide legged trousers and birkenstocks in brown. With khaki, brown or plain white tank tops. Beaded / shell necklaces and bracelets.

Add a denim jacket for evenings...

Everyone was wearing this same outfit. Everyone from age 13 to Jennifer Aniston to my grandma. The teachers in the school I worked at.... Everrrrryone.

This was 2005ish?

It was a functional outfit. Light, breezy and comfortable. Its becoming "in style" again (Maybe less boho this time though!)

Naturally a comfortable outfit is going to worn a lot and very popular. Because it's comfortable. Surely women are allowed to be comfortable? 😂

I loved that style - and the skirts with the belts on the hips. Wouldn't look so good on me now though as I don't suit those colours any more - and I no longer have the slim, toned arms I had 15 years ago .

lindyloo57 · 02/06/2023 17:26

I've never like floral print on any clothing, prefer animal print abstract stripes or dots.

Tiddler39 · 02/06/2023 17:55

I felt a bit the same last summer, but then I realised it was the uniform of white trainers and denim jacket that I was sick of seeing.

I’m glad I didn’t throw out my floral dresses as I think they still work really well but I do mix it up and I never wear a dress with white trainers unless it’s short.

I go for tan sandals instead - I think it’s much classier.

hettiethehare · 02/06/2023 17:55

I think there is something about the effect en masse of the floral dress - it's like everyone has tried to exert their individuality by choosing a different print, but by wearing it in the same way (ie with white trainers and a small denim jacket) it just looks exactly the same.

I always notice it when you see a group of female friends together - basically dressed identically in a way I don't when there are a group of women wearing essentially more neutral clothing.

I think I notice it as well as I'm not a massive pattern person so there are very few floral prints I actually like - I do own one myself, but that is it.

But they still look all the same. no matter what the hairstyle etc, no individuality at all, just a sea of white trainers and floral dresses.

That really is bollocks.

I did. I wear dresses all the time. Some of them are floral.

Do you own jeans and trainers?

Obviously not 😁
But size 20 instagramers wearing cross body bags do not look good, even though it's considered fashionable.

And yet again, can someone not wear a crossbody bag simply because it's much easier than actually carrying a bag? Are we all supposed to be more concerned with how we look than with what suits us and is functional or comfortable? What decade are we living in? - it seems we have regressed to the 50s or even earlier on this thread.

polkadottysilly · 02/06/2023 21:05

Don't you sneery people wear bras, undies, socks and swimsuits?

Those are uniforms too. Same shape but different patterns. Or are you basically nudists? In which case - do you then shave your public hair into zaney patterns to keep up with the edgy look?

😂

TheAudie · 02/06/2023 22:08

Naha I’m absolutely loving them! I’m fat and they are just so comfortable and cool to wear with a pair of cycling shorts or chub rub pants underneath. Can wear to work, to the beach, shopping, out for lunch, school run, parties… just love this trend

PerryMenno · 02/06/2023 00:08

It was the same last summer wasn't it? With little denim jackets and white trainers.

About a year ago I stood at a busy intersection in Covent Garden and realised every single woman from 16-60 (including me) was dressed the same.

Yes I noticed this (in London) yesterday. There were mothers and daughters together in almost identical outfits, such as you describe.
I mean they looked fine but it felt like a uniform.
I was never known for following the rules on uniform so I wasn't conforming.

@Rummykitten watch some footage of Chelsea Flower Show and you’ll soon get the idea. I was looking out for some friends who were there but it was impossible! Like Where’s Wally for middle aged women.

😂🤣

This thread actually reads as very unfeminist. A loose fitting long dress is so light and comfortable in summer, covers my legs up, yes we can admire a young stylish woman with perfect make up wearing high heels but to be real we are nipping to the shops, going to work sorting kids out, whatever and I'm absolutely fed up of being uncomfortable. I want to be able to walk to the pub on a nice evening and not be hobbling or being sweaty
I'm not wanting to look dreadful so choose a pattern and shape that suits me and do my hair and make up
Sick of clothes that are too tight, Tops that ride up , uncomfortable shoes, and cross body bags keep your hands free. We are so judgemental, ooh heaven forbid we don't look thin.
When people comment on the men it is true, they don't truss themselves up with bags and shoes and tight clothes, so we are at a disadvantage from the start.

Pretty much everything she said.

they are easy to wear, comfortable, and to be honest I couldn’t give a flying fuck about looking “sexy” . Don’t think men spend a lot of time thinking about it either

Come to Canada for a break. I have not once seen this look.

I certainly believe that!

DeoForty · 03/06/2023 00:51

I was in a big M&S today and there was literally hoards of people around the Nobody's Child dresses.

I get that they are 'easy' and some of the prints are nice. They suit a certain body type and those of average height. But my god, it's like a cult. There has been one from Tu at Sainsburys that is everywhere, it's a nice enough print but it is very dominating and a very 'unflattering' cut. I say unflattering, I know clothes don't have to be slimming, but the dress is like a small girls dress that makes anyone with soft arms or large boobs look like Bo Peep.

minermabey · 03/06/2023 01:07

They're nice but they're like a uniform for women over 30 with white trainers or plimsolls. I like them but not for me. I like a knee length dress.

Don't come to NZ if you want to avoid it!! While not owning a floral dress myself I certainly wear dresses (linen, no pattern) or midaxi skirts with sneakers (what you would call plimsolls) - and a denim jacket on the one or two cooler days in summer. So easy, so comfortable, and I don't care if half the women in town are wearing the same thing. The patterns are all different, and the women don't look the same. What they do look is at ease with their clothing.

I was thinking of this thread yesterday morning on my walk to work. On a 40 minute walk I saw one woman wearing this "uniform". Jeans, trainers and a nondescript black jacket on the other hand......

Yetisrus · 03/06/2023 07:05

For me it's not actually the floral print but the whole outfit of dress, denim jacket and white trainers.

if it's cold enough for me to need a jacket it's too cold for a dress. If it's maybe 20c I'll wear a cardigan.
