Today has put me off floral dresses 😩

I live on the south coast and had a day in the nearest big town today. I had been feeling pretty pleased with the floral dresses I'd bought ready for summer, but after wandering around today I've just totally gone off them. I just feel saturated with seeing floral dresses all day. I love a floral dress as much as the next person but they all started to blend into one, a uniform of floral dresses often paired with the same kind of shoe, it was all a bit much in the end. Anyone else feeling the same?

You're welcome

This!!!!!!!

I really like the look. I like it because I feel dresses up a little, I feel comfortable, I feel feminine, I feel cool in warm weather, I actually feel confident in them too.... After all, what I wear is all about me, and not others are wearing or whether I look sexual to other people.

A floral dress is no “better” or worse than gym gear or slouchy wear

User98866 · 02/06/2023 08:39

I mean what else can you actually wear in summer apart from dress, or shorts and t shirt/blouse or trousers and a T-shirt/blouse? All with either trainers or sandals because that’s practical summer footwear. I’ve never been a dress person as I always found them unflattering but I really like the fact that many have longer arms now, that’s the bit I wish to hide, and have bought a lovely green gingham dress from M&S which I do wear with trainers. I’d like lightweight bomber jacket instead of denim, but can’t find the right thing in the right colour. I don’t feel the trend is saturated down West Country tbh, I think we’re probably about 5 years behind in fashion terms !

nahwhale · 02/06/2023 08:39

Could you maybe just close your eyes?

And mostly- but not always- strikingly asexual.

The horror. It's so important for women to look sexual at all times.

Exactly 😂

Bathintheshed · 02/06/2023 08:41

I wear them because they are comfortable, they work and I feel attractive in them. Although for me it is usually a plimsoll rather than full trainer. But I have dressed this way for the last decade. I am in no way a sheep, but would rather feel comfortable and attractive then go out of my way to look edgy and often ridiculous. I would say stopping wearing something you like wearing and making a big effort to notice what others wear is more sheep like.

polkadottysilly · 02/06/2023 08:42

So I've been on the lookout for a nice floral midi dress! I've missed the boat on them somewhat but they look so easy to style and wear.

I do have a polka dot midi dress (navy with white dots from New Look) and a plain black midi dress which I wear on rotation - are those okay?

😳 I'm 35 and most definitely "lost my style" since covid.

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 02/06/2023 08:42

I have three everyday print dresses and wear them with slip on bensimons. I look forward to it all year as its so easy and comfy.

polkadottysilly · 02/06/2023 08:43

Although for me it is usually a plimsoll rather than full trainer this sounds like you only wear one rather than a pair 😂

SpringPop · 02/06/2023 08:44

I’m not keen on those long floral dresses. Think they look a bit old fashioned. Like something g my mum used to wear in 1992. Hate formal dresses with trainers too.

SeverineSix · 02/06/2023 08:25

Alternatives to a denim jacket? a jersey blazer- slim fit- e.g. from Whistles?
A bomber cut jacket- again in jersey or a silk fabric. Both available in lots of different colours.
But really, the denim jackets the least of the issues. It's the floral dresses that i dislike.
I do cringe a bit when I see my peers in the floral dress/ white trainers/ denim jacket uniform. I suspect they are middle aged women (my peers) who think it makes them look 'girly' and then think the trainers and denim jacket are a surprising and original foil to the girliness- trying to give the outfit an 'edge' by pairing 'girly' with 'casual/sporty/androgyny'. It's become a cliche, a watered down version of what you might have seen in a fashion magazine 10 years ago of a model in a huge tulle skirt and a jumper and tough boots. And when it has spread through the entire female population, it is formulaic and tired.

You sound like a thundering sneery bitch.

Tell that to my 17 year old dd and her friends!

I'm happy to hear opposing views and I'm interested in them but all this "I don't care what I wear/what people think" is really tiresome; this is Style and Beauty, we're here to discuss that 🙄

In your opinion. In my opinion, there are places I wouldn't go in slouchy wear as I'd feel underdressed and casual. I don't feel like that in a floral dress

Or one of each, to be really edgy 😆

Octomingo · 02/06/2023 08:48

It's just the equivalent of the princess Diana pleated skirts my mum used to wear in the 80s. I think most people's mums did. I have a few pleated skirts now and they always remind me of my mum.

I don't care what everyone else wears, but I'm not personally a fan of midi. I like getting my legs out when I'm not in work, so I've pretty much slipped back to my pre teen years of wearing shorts. Try as I might, I just can't do dresses in casual life. I just find them impractical.

You're wearing the same floral dresses as everyone else but on you it's a different vibe because you have an edgy style?! No, it's still just another floral dress Grin

There's nothing wrong with the look I guess, but I don't like the way that all the shops churn out the same stuff so there's a lack of choices around but tons and tons of floral dresses.

It means she's wearing a leather biker jacket and DMs with them instead.

I used to tell myself that this made it different, too. But we're all just women in flowery frocks.

You can be interested in style and beauty without being critical of others

and sure as heck not being supportive of a poster describing an outfit as “strikingly asexual”

3luckystars · 02/06/2023 08:53

I love them, just not on me. Very few dresses suit me.

I saw one dress the other day and it’s exactly what I’m looking for, I don’t know how to go about finding one.
they are like those dresses we wore in the 80’s, short sleeves, t-shirt material, to the knee, very plain, maybe striped with a rope around the waist. I absolutely love those dresses!

But they are styling and beautiful, you're just upset that a large proportion of the population agree with you. That's what happens when something is in fashion.

Bathintheshed · 02/06/2023 08:53

*stylish

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 02/06/2023 08:53

What does asexual even mean in this instance??? It's such an odd choice of word 😅 but I'm late fifties and only interested in sex with my dh, not making myself sexy for others.

Housenoob · 02/06/2023 08:54

It's not the floral aspect that I don't like, but the midi. I'm petite, slim all over except for my mum tum and midi dresses seem to either emphasise that or else make me look extremely dowdy. I love a floral mini dress, it's more fun and easy to move around in and so much more flattering on most petite people IMO.
