Today has put me off floral dresses 😩

I live on the south coast and had a day in the nearest big town today. I had been feeling pretty pleased with the floral dresses I'd bought ready for summer, but after wandering around today I've just totally gone off them. I just feel saturated with seeing floral dresses all day. I love a floral dress as much as the next person but they all started to blend into one, a uniform of floral dresses often paired with the same kind of shoe, it was all a bit much in the end. Anyone else feeling the same?

The floral dress, white trainers and denim jacket look is so safe and boring.

faffadoodledo · 02/06/2023 07:41

The Chelsea flower show was quite funny when i went last week - a sea of floral dresses, denim jackets and trainers. But here's the thing: they're comfy and cool. I'd rather see women in trainers they can run and walk in than high heels. And dresses which don't cling and have to be pulled and checked every time we move
And guess what? I wore the uniform! Albeit with a cream denim jacket.

MySoCalledWife · 02/06/2023 07:43

I have not been able to adopt this style as it does not suit me

Love the look though

I'm wearing mostly baggy trousers/jeans and a bright coloured top it seems Grin

🎶😁 An ear worm to nod off to.

That would be a fantastic line in a song!

I think it's good to see that people have found something that they like to wear that has lasted remained popular for > one season. Cost of living and all that.

Scotty12 · 02/06/2023 07:53

To be honest I’ve always thought most people look frumpy in a floral dress….

Tigofigo · 02/06/2023 07:56

YANBU - I think cheap generic floral prints hardly look good on anyone.

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 02/06/2023 08:00

I went to Edinburgh a few weeks ago when the weather was nice, during the day, and the evenings, everyone was wearing a floral dress.

On the evening I had a pair of jeans on and Floaty top and I felt really out of place. I'm short and fat and floral just makes me look like I'm wearing a pair of my nana's curtains.

Floral dresses at the Chelsea flower show, you say? I am amazed and shocked. Seriously, what is remotely funny or surprising about women wearing floral dresses to a flower show? It is like tittering when I wear boots to go hillwalking or jodphurs to ride in. It is totally appropriate and normal attire for the activity they are involved in.

Why do some women love to sneer and judge other women's perfectly innocuous and approproate clothes? As other posters have pointed out, men don't get this shit for their 'asexual' chinos and sensible shoes.

mauvish · 02/06/2023 08:02

Think yourself lucky it's summer dress weather where you live! In my part of the UK, it was trousers and a down jacket weather yesterday 😕

Xrays · 02/06/2023 08:02

So what are people supposed to wear instead? When it’s hot and you might need a jacket? A dress is a dress. As you get older and / or have children floral dresses or something with a pattern are great because they hide all sorts - bits of toddler food, baby sick, moments of bladder leakage if your pad doesn’t hold up or if you’re caught unexpectedly, etc etc. A plain dress can instantly let you down in that regard as it shows everything. Cardigans can make the look more frumpy (I know Mumsnet hates that words but can’t think of a better one)! And blazers are either too smart or uncomfortable. That’s why the whole floral / patterned dress and denim jacket thing has become a staple.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 02/06/2023 08:04

I have "the dresses" but I just don't buy florals. I've got black and white with little stars, polka dot, green and black chevron, stripes, feather print.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 02/06/2023 08:05

I know what you mean though, OP. I wear one if I think "Oh, I'll make a bit of effort for today" but then it ends up feeling like the equivalent of jeans and a breton anyway.

And mostly- but not always- strikingly asexual.

The horror. It's so important for women to look sexual at all times.

I know right? When I get dressed in the morning my primary concern isn't comfort or feeling happy in my skin, it's about looking as sexual as I possibly can.

I don't really get this, floral is just the print, there are so many different cuts and styles I don't see how they are frumpy just because of the pattern- of which itself differs immensely too. This also applies to the asexual comment, so bizarre.

Personally I don't see many people around here pairing them with denim jackets and white trainers, but if you like the clothes then who cares? I find it sad when people won't wear something they actually like just because it's popular, and as has been said it's good if people get more wear out of the clothes- saving the planet and all that.

How was i sneering? I was wearing the same 'uniform'. And it was amusing. Lots of us thought so. We're allowed to laugh at ourselves. I said I'd rather see women in trainers than heels and that the dresses were comfy and cool. I'm a practical woman like yourself by the sounds of it.

Garrard · 02/06/2023 08:12

I love them - cotton floral maxi dresses are nice and airy and don't press on anything. I wore them in the 90s, too. I don't own a denim jacket or any trainers, though. I wear them with ballet flats (Docs in the 90s).

But I don't care much about what's fashionable - I only really care about what suits me and what feels nice (I've never worn jeans/trousers, for example, because I find them uncomfortable).

To be fair to that poster they said they wore the same too and acknowledged there's a reason it's popular, seems a bit of a pointed reply considering.

Museya15 · 02/06/2023 08:13

I like them but I'm not a follower of fashion, I can guess the shoes are trainers?!

Floisme · 02/06/2023 08:17

It isn't the floral print, so much as all the layers and frills.

Yeah I don't think it's the print that's makes them all look so alike. I spotted a vintage Liberty shirt dress the other day: little floral pattern - tick, midi length - tick, but it was also fitted with a belt, not a tier or a ruffle in sight, and it looked so fresh and striking. I'm not really interested in dresses at the moment but, if this one had fitted, I'd have bought it.

God, absolutely 💯 this.

ilovesushi · 02/06/2023 08:19

I think they look lovely. It reminds a little bit of being a small kid in 1970s coming out of infant school and seeing all the beautiful mums at the school gate in their long floral skirts and dresses.

TheOGCCL · 02/06/2023 08:19

Pros:
Easy to throw on yet looks like some effort has been made
No need to worry about coordinating top and bottom
No need to worry about what shape jeans are in/out
Good for people not particularly interested in fashion
Cover an absolute multitude of sins
Helps you blend into the crowd
Can be worn in lots of settings, good smart/casual option
(Did at one point look fresh and modern)
Its nice to see lots of colour and makes a change from black athleisure or luxe neutrals

Cons:
Can be ageing as you don’t see the combo so much under 30 (but we are not supposed to care about that)
Can look a bit fussy
Completely ubiquitous so devoid of personal style and originality
Some floral prints are not very flattering, or you need to find one that suits your figure
Very distinctive - with separates you can mix and match to create new outfits
Lots are polyester which isn’t good for the environment

Successstory82 · 02/06/2023 08:20

The thought that some of your sneering and judging are mothers…. Is actually a bit disturbing.

If everybody looked the same, we'd get tired of looking at each other
