Today has put me off floral dresses 😩

I live on the south coast and had a day in the nearest big town today. I had been feeling pretty pleased with the floral dresses I'd bought ready for summer, but after wandering around today I've just totally gone off them. I just feel saturated with seeing floral dresses all day. I love a floral dress as much as the next person but they all started to blend into one, a uniform of floral dresses often paired with the same kind of shoe, it was all a bit much in the end. Anyone else feeling the same?

Certainly better and more interesting than a frilly floral monstrosity by a long way. Google women wearing it.

I'm joshing with you but I actually meant Canadian 😂😂 PS Joshing with you again!

Pack up your dresses for a hol up north you’ll not see any floral midi dresses with white trainers

Must depend which bit of the North you’re in, they’re everywhere in south Manchester.

SirChenjins · 02/06/2023 10:53

I really like them on other women...unfortunately on my 5 foot 1, 10/12 frame I just look like my mother back in the 80s and a bit 'the f word we can't say' - I just can't shake the image. I prefer big bold prints or plain dresses on me and sandals that lengthen my legs. Trainers shorten everything and make me look like I've been hammered downwards and outwards.

Cantonet · 02/06/2023 10:49

Yes, it does. Look at this picture attached.
I'm perfectly prepared to accept that it's my bug-bear though.

To misquote someone, it’s not the bag in that photo that’s making the model look fat.

Please give us an image of going hard.

The way the dresses are styled on this site- unapologetically and so you can actually see the dress. It's not a look for everyone but that's what I like about it. Cabbages and Roses do a similar look.

I find the dress+jacket+trainers thing too apologetic (while accepting that jacket and trainers are practical- it's the things together as a deliberate look that I find boring especially after so long). Sort of "I'm wearing a floral dress but don't worry, I'm not really a floral dress person"- unobjectionable but dull. Image attached is an example of the look I don't like- I mean, it's fine but so boring.

Down my way yesterday - women incorporating two things talked about on here recently - floral dresses and granny knickers! Cool and airy.

I feel the same about everyone wearing denim jeans and they look even more similar to each other than floral dresses. But short of getting out a toga I’m happy to wear what’s in the shops and is comfortable and suits me, which happens to be jeans and trainers in the winter and a floral dress and trainers in the summer.

ArabeIIaScott · 02/06/2023 10:59

Ah another floral midi dress thread. Sadly they start trending and therefore people from outside S&B come in and consider all discussion about clothes which isn't just "wear what you like, who cares" as sneery. It's a style forum - it's meant to have some value attached to the statements.

Yeah, this is exactly what happened. I'll see myself out.

I'm confused. I thought when you said going hard you meant an alternative way of dressing but you mean a more ethnic version of a floral dress?

Floisme · 02/06/2023 11:04

I see you qualified that with over 40...I do love this look on a young girl. Very rarely see it on older women where I live.

The fights were mainly about women over 40 having the temerity to wear them Grin It must have been 10 or 15 years ago. Great days.

Yes, wearing a floral dress used to be a bit of a fancy thing to do, but now they've become mundane. And mostly- but not always- strikingly asexual.

Agree. But asexual might be what they want, which is fine. Bias cut silky dresses like attached aren't asexual imo, tho they aren't striking. I think most people want to blend in.

Beauden Dress

May cause compliments. Shop the Beauden Dress from Reformation, a sleeveless, midi dress with a V-neckline.

No, not more ethnic (not sure any of the pictures are "ethnic versions" of a floral dress or what that meansConfused)- I mean wearing a floral dress as if you're happy to be wearing it and styling it so that you can actually see the shape of the dress. The jacket and trainers look seems very half-arsed and uncommitted- I get that it's about trying to offset the femininity of the dress by putting it together with more utility items- that's what I don't like about it. Might have looked modern once but now it looks drab (to me).

Beautiful dresses Drossel but they don't seem to be styled with any other clothing apart from sandals.** Given the weather here, I would want to take along another layer, and I'm bored with wearing a denim jacket over dresses.

The weather is definitely a factor, agreed!

I also agree with you @Drosselmeyer

Trainers and denim jackets look so clunky. Should not be paired with a floral dress.

I've been guilt before but never again

Full house, now 'Karen' has entered the chat 😂 I'm a literal and metaphorical Karen - middle aged, white, vocal and Karen is my actual name.

Please tell me what jacket I should wear with my dresses to avoid looking like I lie about my voting choices 😂👍

I'm baffled too. It's a dress shop, of course they aren't going to put jackets over their beautiful dresses!

For men who are really into fashion, there's important detail in that jeans and tshirt look though, and they can discern current/not current. The shapes, the brands, the shoes etc. My young adult who's into that stuff is constantly churning his wardrobe.

That's true actually, especially trainers but I also think with men, its about the watch too.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/06/2023 11:49

Floral dresses at the Chelsea flower show, you say? I am amazed and shocked. Seriously, what is remotely funny or surprising about women wearing floral dresses to a flower show? It is like tittering when I wear boots to go hillwalking or jodphurs to ride in. It is totally appropriate and normal attire for the activity they are involved in.

Why do some women love to sneer and judge other women's perfectly innocuous and approproate clothes? As other posters have pointed out, men don't get this shit for their 'asexual' chinos and sensible shoes.

@HeadNorth whilst I agree with your post above - I don't see why you have picked on @faffadoodledo 's post - she is saying that the dresses are cool and comfy and trainers better than heels - plus she is wearing the outfit herself!

xogossipgirlxo · 02/06/2023 11:52

I don't own floral dress, but I don't mind them with nice sandals. Denim jackets spoil the looks though. They should really be worn now oversize only, not the fitted ones. Very much mum look.

HeadNorth · 02/06/2023 11:54

So now we have 'mum look' 'asexual' and 'Karen' - any more takers for a full house of misogyny?

BeginningToLookALotLike · 02/06/2023 11:57

Morris but plenty of stores do, John Lewis for one shows what else could be worn with their dresses.

Have we had 'frumpy' yet? That ought to do it.
