Today has put me off floral dresses 😩

I live on the south coast and had a day in the nearest big town today. I had been feeling pretty pleased with the floral dresses I'd bought ready for summer, but after wandering around today I've just totally gone off them. I just feel saturated with seeing floral dresses all day. I love a floral dress as much as the next person but they all started to blend into one, a uniform of floral dresses often paired with the same kind of shoe, it was all a bit much in the end. Anyone else feeling the same?

Yay I had that nuclear power badge as well @MorrisZapp!
I thought I still had it but sadly no.
I have still got this one though:

Love it! I always envied my brother, he had a Tufty Club badge ♥️

Do you fancy taking your misogyny and ageism somewhere else? It’s very boring to read.

Meekly?
If it's "meek" to stand in a queue waiting for your turn and letting others who got there first take a turn, then you've pretty much proved my point.

You had a point?? Sure about that??

Quitelikeacatslife · 02/06/2023 13:36

This thread actually reads as very unfeminist. A loose fitting long dress is so light and comfortable in summer, covers my legs up, yes we can admire a young stylish woman with perfect make up wearing high heels but to be real we are nipping to the shops, going to work sorting kids out, whatever and I'm absolutely fed up of being uncomfortable. I want to be able to walk to the pub on a nice evening and not be hobbling or being sweaty
I'm not wanting to look dreadful so choose a pattern and shape that suits me and do my hair and make up
Sick of clothes that are too tight, Tops that ride up , uncomfortable shoes, and cross body bags keep your hands free. We are so judgemental, ooh heaven forbid we don't look thin.
When people comment on the men it is true, they don't truss themselves up with bags and shoes and tight clothes, so we are at a disadvantage from the start.

WizardinTraining · 02/06/2023 13:48

But surely it's just fashion - there's a 'look' that's in every few years and right now that's it. The winter equivalent would probably be black athleisure wear/puffa coat/white sport socks/trainers. It's nothing new that lots of people wear the same thing - I'm a bit confused.

That said it's not a look I go for, not because I'm so edgy and cool - it just doesnt suit me. I've worn a denim jacket and trainers since I was my DD's age though, I'd say they were pretty standard in most wardrobes. I like across body bag too although they're really annoying if you've got big boobs, like wearing a seatbelt 🤦🏻

Wyndam · 02/06/2023 13:54

I must live a different lifestyle to everyone else who says dresses are so easy. Having to deal with all the fabric wafting about trying not to flash anyone getting in and out of cars or sitting down cross legged. Plus I would get chub rub so it just makes me hot and sweaty and not at all cool and breezy. Floral or not, dresses are just not comfortable at all so I'm not part of that club.

caringcarer · 02/06/2023 13:59

I like a nice cotton floral summer dress so much cooler than other clothes. I've worn these for umpteen years. I don't care if they are in fashion or out of fashion. They suit me and my lifestyle. I like a nice cardigan too if it gets cooler.

Does this mean my Tufty Club badge is the new must-have accessory? I don't have a floral dress to put it on but I have a cross body bag with other badges already on it 😀

Ooh I was in the Tufty club too! And I had the CND badge (although totally ubiquitous with students at the time)

faffadoodledo · 02/06/2023 14:31

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea thanks for the defence. But I don't think @HeadNorth even read my whole post before firing off a snippy (and erroneous!) reply. Couple of other posters piled in too. Lovely thread this. One even felt it necessary to hunt me down to another S&B thread and get personal. All kinds of nastiness here on a thread about floral dresses of all things. Sigh

polkadottysilly · 02/06/2023 14:48

I remember when most women were wearing beige linen wide legged trousers and birkenstocks in brown. With khaki, brown or plain white tank tops. Beaded / shell necklaces and bracelets.

Add a denim jacket for evenings...

Everyone was wearing this same outfit. Everyone from age 13 to Jennifer Aniston to my grandma. The teachers in the school I worked at.... Everrrrryone.

This was 2005ish?

It was a functional outfit. Light, breezy and comfortable. Its becoming "in style" again (Maybe less boho this time though!)

Naturally a comfortable outfit is going to worn a lot and very popular. Because it's comfortable. Surely women are allowed to be comfortable? 😂

I like this look.

Sunnydays0101 · 02/06/2023 15:00

Nothing wrong with floral dresses at all, if you want to wear them, wear them. For every 10 people you see wearing a floral dress, if you look around you will see another 20 wearing dresses, jeans, trousers, etc in block colours/stripes/non floral prints, etc.

Variety is what keeps a wardrobe of clothes interesting, I have three floral midi dresses, and then several more in block colours. I tend to wear the florals pottering around/doing errands, etc. I don’t wear them out in the evenings as for me, they are more a daytime look.

The sneery comments from some posters on this thread are so funny with the lofty idea that they are too ‘edgy’ for florals!

SirChenjins · 02/06/2023 15:29

^ what she said.

Reminds me of being a teenager and dressing all in black thinking I was being super alternative. The irony at the time was lost on me that I was still dressing to a 'uniform', just not the same as my friends but all of the millions of others who were also so unique and quirky 🤣 not!

Fine to not like something, but liking it but being nasty or refusing to wear it because its popular is sad.

… I guess it’s the female equivalent of a shirt and chinos or jeans. V rare is the man who’d worry he looked dull or asexual in that, because who cares when you are just going about your business.

Might be rare in general but not in men’s style forums or if you follow any men’s fashion accounts on Twitter or insta. Men who are into this stuff are really into it and spend hours debating the precise angle of a collar or cut of a pair of trousers. It’s not just women.

I was just remembering my Tufty Club badge as I read your post 🤣

LittlePampelmouse · 02/06/2023 16:15

I dont wear dresses myself but am always happy to see them around, they were invisible for years so it is nice to see them again! They're bright and summery and probably much cooler than my jeans and tshirt.

Stravaig · 02/06/2023 16:17

It always saddens me that we live in a world where to feel better about the choices we make we look for validation by othering people and defining ourselves as 'not'. You can appreciate and enjoy your version of style and beauty without denigrating someone else. Things can just sometimes 'be' without having to be 'not'.

😍🤗 This is really well put @MrsFrisbyMouse

Hillrunning · 02/06/2023 05:24

As another poster said. No different than the jean/shorts and top combo that men have been wearing as a uniform for decades, not just a few summers.

Who cares? As for commenting that they often look asexual...Good god. How dare all these women going about on their holidays not look sexual? What will the poor men perv over?

Totally agree - why must women look edgy or ‘cool’ to be stylish? I love this look - and would argue or is so much nicer to see lots of colour than a band t-shirt and jeans on a sunny day.

With men we’re just happy if they are wearing clean clothes. It’s the same with parenting. Why do women hold other women to higher standards? I’ve never heard a man say - gee, I’m so over looking at women in floral dresses 🙄.

Currently in a playground in a fashionable bit of London and not a floral dress in sight. All wearing buttery trousers & fashionably underdressed 😂😂

Thechameleonsshadow · 02/06/2023 16:31

PS love all the badges.

Explain these buttery trousers to me - do they not get a bit greasy in this heat?

Seriously - what on earth are 'buttery trousers'???

SocksAndTheCity · 02/06/2023 16:41

Buttery trousers sound like they would be good on the slide. Less so for the swings, where you want a bit of purchase.
