Today has put me off floral dresses 😩

I live on the south coast and had a day in the nearest big town today. I had been feeling pretty pleased with the floral dresses I'd bought ready for summer, but after wandering around today I've just totally gone off them. I just feel saturated with seeing floral dresses all day. I love a floral dress as much as the next person but they all started to blend into one, a uniform of floral dresses often paired with the same kind of shoe, it was all a bit much in the end. Anyone else feeling the same?

I miss the skinnies-with-a-breton-top fights.
And before them, tunic and leggings.

BluebellBlueballs · 02/06/2023 10:33

I have a couple of floral dresses but they are not my favourite pattern.
I prefer plain colours to prints generally.

ExcitingTimes2021 · 02/06/2023 10:36

I honestly don’t really care what I’m wearing let alone what someone else has on. 😂😂
Dress to make you happy! If you are fed up with florals wear something else.

However I abhor cross body bags. Especially on non-skinnys as they just accentuate the fact that you're not

and everyone has to appear "non skinny"?

Obviously not 😁
But size 20 instagramers wearing cross body bags do not look good, even though it's considered fashionable.

TheMurderousGoose · 02/06/2023 10:38

Like a pp I like wearing a floral dress in the winter, with tights and boots. Imagining I'm the singer in a cool 90s indie band.

I don't love BIG floral patterns (I prefer plain dresses really), or anything voluminous, and I don't personally love the pairing of trainers but I can see the appeal of the floral midi/trainers/denim jacket combo as summer dressing can a lot more stress inducing for people and this is an accessible look.

Pigtailsandall · 02/06/2023 10:39

Ah another floral midi dress thread. Sadly they start trending and therefore people from outside S&B come in and consider all discussion about clothes which isn't just "wear what you like, who cares" as sneery. It's a style forum - it's meant to have some value attached to the statements.

Usually someone comes in and says
"I've been wearing floral midis since the 70s so its classic" (yawn) good for you, I wasn't even born then
"They are comfortable so I don't care what fashion tell me to wear" (although fashion did tell you to wear that combo in the first place)
"It's a classic" (it's not, not in this formula the op stated)
"Wear what you like, who cares" (great, although hardly constructive for s&b topic

I can't stand the tiered, floral frilly things and I think women (disproportionately) think they look good in them. Some do, in some. Not all. There are other things which offer airiness and comfort on a hot day. I love a denim jacket (usually now with jeans or shorts) but it's actually neither practical nor that comfy very often.

I can't believe this - you are saying that because someone is a certain size they do not look good with a certain type of bag?

I see your Popsy dresses and I raise you shorts with tights (especially over 40).

Thick opaque tights or thin ones?

Pigtailsandall · 02/06/2023 10:42

@Floisme @SaxSick floral midi is the new epitome of s&b style arguments. I saw the thread and thought I won't go there and did anyway. Oh well. Maybe next summer is the summer I get to buy new dresses, finally.

Drosselmeyer · 02/06/2023 10:42

I've always loved a floral dress but I don't really like the half-arsed approach to floral dresses that's been fashionable the last few years- shapeless dress covered in shapeless denim jacket plus trainers, as if you're slightly embarrassed to be in the dress at all. Go hard or go home.

a crossbody bag accentuates someone's fatness?

how weird.

Please give us an image of going hard.

I quite like the ubiquity. I like the fact that you can throw something weather appropriate and comfortable on in the heat and just blend in. Partly because I often feel like I somehow don't always quite hit the mark in what I choose to wear - there's always something awkward, something off. But not in a floral dress. It's just fine and for once, I'm wearing the same as everyone else.

Love it.

Yes! It looks surpirisingly good! I'm Canadian and it's called a Canadian tuxedo; I feel very lumberjack. I do usually do straight black jeans with a light, oversized men's Levi's jacket

I see you qualified that with over 40...I do love this look on a young girl. Very rarely see it on older women where I live.

and you admit that? 😂😂😂

Thechameleonsshadow · 02/06/2023 10:46

Also, weighing in on how "asexual" they are, I would argue that most Toast dresses (huge personal & MN faves) appear as asexual as they come to many and are as ubiquitous to a certain demographic as floral dresses are to another.

Horses for course, innit.

I just read about this on A History of Architecture's Instagram - had no idea it was a thing :)

StartleburpFearsneer · 02/06/2023 10:49

Still prefer the fashion from 15 years ago and continue to wear that. Mini dresses or blouses and shorts paired with boots, sandals or dolly shoes. Fashion then was a more indie femininity. Clothes were better quality too.

Yes, it does. Look at this picture attached.
I'm perfectly prepared to accept that it's my bug-bear though.

Certainly better and more interesting than a frilly floral monstrosity by a long way. Google women wearing it.
