Looks like we ran out of space - welcome to a shiny new thread! (the 36th edition!)

Hope you approve of the title. 😁

As always, everyone is very welcome - we're most definitely open to Newbies. Come and discuss your Scent Of The Day (SOTD), old favourites, new infatuations, the best dupes and scents of any price point. We are very friendly! 😊

SOTD is PP dupe of Gypsy water. I'm not paying Byredo prices for something that lasts 5 minutes tops. Even the PP clone fades quickly but it's a lovely smell for a sunny day.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 05/06/2023 13:18

@RosesAndHellebores

The perfume society does lovely tester boxes which introduce you to new scents. Might be worth a shot?

Those here that like fig and fig leaf notes, what are your favorite perfumes for this?

How I wish I had an SOTD. You all seem to know about things I've never heard of. The perfumes I always have are: Estee Lauder's Modern Muse, eau de parfum, Dior's J'Adore, Gucci Bloom, Lancome Idole and Cartier's La Panthere for evenings.

I feel somewhat stumped since our local department store closed and it's no longer possible to have a spray of this and that. In Boots everything's kept in a locked cupboard.

Are there common themes to my choices or are they just so mainstream it's utterly boring. I have tried some of the Tom Ford ones but I'm not sold

You can sign up for subscription boxes that will send you a scent (some of them allow you to choose, others choose them for you depending on your scent profile). I’ve been looking at Parfumado recently, although I haven’t signed up yet it looks quite good.

Also worth reading fragrantica and bois de Jasmin, fragrantica especially. You can find perfumes according to what notes you like, and get recommendations via ‘this perfume reminds me of’ on the profile page of a perfume. For example, La Panthere reminds people of Natura’s Essencial Elixir, so maybe that could be one you’d like to get a sample of.

https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Natura/Essencial-Elixir-44732.html

The forums especially are busy and helpful, definitely worth visiting for information and recommendations.

Etsy is good for buying samples, eBay too. There’s also websites like fragrancesamplesuk.com that offer a good range of both designer and niche perfumes.

Fig is one of my favourite notes for summer. The ones I reach for over and over again are Bois Naufrage by Pierre Guillaume (salty, woody fig, like fig trees growing on a wild Atlantic coast) and Debaser by DS&Durga, (which I originally bought blind on the name alone and had rather hoped would be sweaty, dirty and skanky but turns out to be a lovely lactonic fig with iris).

And of course the OG of fig perfumes, Philosykos.

SOTD is the very unfiggy Eau Dynamisante.

TakeYourHatOffBoy · 06/06/2023 10:55

Welcome @RosesAndHellebores! I like Gucci Bloom and I think we have fans of Modern Muse and La Panthere on this thread, although I must admit I don't really know this perfumes myself.

I get pretty much everything as samples online these days, except for sadly infrequent visits to Liberty / Bloom / Les Senteurs in London for sniffathons. I echo the suggestion of trying a Perfume Society box, or Bloom online does themed sample packs for reasonable prices that will introduce you to a world of niche fragrance. And then you'll need to put your credit card in the freezer I'm afraid 😆

Hospital today so my hospital cologne, used up dozens of bottles of this.

You might like Meøexis by Manos Gerakinis. It's a really odd but gorgeous fig/honey/chocolate gourmand.

Sotd narciso poudree

FestivelyScent · 06/06/2023 19:19

SOTD is MH Violet Ida, for a trip to the King's Rd. This might not have huge projection, but it just lasts and lasts.

Sadly, didn't get a chance to pop into Peter Jones for a big sniff, but have plans to go back again soon to rectify this. Was very sunny in London today. 🌞

Matching @FestivelyScent in Violet Ida today 👯‍♀️

DramaAlpaca · 07/06/2023 01:25

@RosesAndHellebores I'm with you on Modern Muse and J'adore, and I've just recently got my paws on La Panthere, which is gorgeous.

I find myself getting more into niche and indie fragrances these days, but still have firm favourites amongst designer brands too.

SOTD was Fluffy Lemon Top again, which got yet another compliment. I just adore this scent and it seems to suit my body chemistry perfectly. Lasts forever, too.

I know very little about fig fragrances, I might need to explore.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 07/06/2023 01:38

Evening all SOTD is Acqua di Parma Peonia Nobile, one of my favourites.

Mine too! It’s such a ‘summer’ note. I find myself spraying philosykos in winter because it really is like summer in a bottle. Just lovely.

I like the sound of Bois Naufrage, going to have a look for that. My figs are all Mediterranean, so this one sounds interesting.

SOTD is Jo Malone rose water and vanilla (my other note obsession of late - loukoum)

if you’re after a dirty fig I’ve heard good things about Fig Porn by BTSO, as well as Fig by Aftelier which combines fig with musk, civet, and castoreum notes.

TakeYourHatOffBoy · 07/06/2023 12:38

Lovely suggestions, thank you @LadyOfTheCanyon and @whumpthereitis, I'll seek all of those out.

SOTD Theo Fennel Scent - sex in a bottle, so entirely appropriate for me currently sat here in sweatpants and slippers, marking essays with a blanket over my knees <<wolf-whistles at self>> Grin

Cantonet · 07/06/2023 12:47

Van Cleef & Arpels California Reverie is Sotd. It's one of the few perfumes I've ever bought a second bottle of. It's so pretty, natural smelling & feminine. I'll have to wear a butch perfume tomorrow to counter balance all this femininity.
Bois Neufrage sounds stunning. I love a salty woody perfume.

DramaAlpaca · 07/06/2023 13:53

@TakeYourHatOffBoy I'm laughing at your description of Theo Fennell Scent Grin I find the opening of that one is sheer filth, it's quite disturbing 😳 then the dry down is just gorgeous and more suitable for wearing out in public.

<adjusts pearls>

TakeYourHatOffBoy · 07/06/2023 16:02

@DramaAlpaca yes! It goes waaaay beyond skank; it's basically pornographic.

Can't even open the door to the postman in that first hour post-application 🤣

(Apologies all, for dragging down the tone, but it really is utter filth.)

scentnsensibility · 07/06/2023 16:24

Wow sex in a bottle! My DP usually says I smell like old leather belts or a bonfire🤭
SOTD 4160 Tuesdays Spellbinder

Cantonet · 07/06/2023 16:43

Scent on me smelt like I was doubly incontinent & hadn't washed for a month. I made the mistake of spraying just before standing in a Tk maxx queue.
It reminded me of travelling on a train to Versaille with my Dad & a very ripe Camembert. With the French sniffing us in disgust & moving away rapidly.

scentnsensibility · 07/06/2023 21:05

Cantonet oh no, that sounds terrible! The other day I kept getting wafts of stale fag smoke and realised it was me, luckily it was just a stage of whatever I'd tried and the dry down was much more acceptable.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/06/2023 21:34

SOTD the very dregs of TF Soleil Blanc. Do I replace this? I only wear it in summer but I do really like it - equally I have a gazillion other bottles 😂
