Awesome title; very glad you improved on my suggestion a bit (I'm really not a poet Grin )! Thank you for the new thread! Flowers

From the other thread relative to white for mourning, Jacqueline Kennedy was still in mourning when she came to the UK for the dedication at Runnymede for JFK, and she wore white.

That's interesting.

Thank you for the new thread !
agree with everyone about the pared down coronation. If not the sparkle and capes what is the jeffing point of it all. Maybe if we all chipped in and promised KC a new pen… 🖊

Evening all, checking in! The threads fill up so fast!

DisforDarkChocolate · 09/10/2022 19:41

I think we should start a petition. Royal Jewellery, Raiding the Vaults.

Bring out all the stuff we never or hardly see. I'd be too excited to book my own ticket.

Speaking of slimming down, did anyone notice that the accession proclamation was also slightly slimmed down? Traditionally "high and mighty" is said before the full name of the new monarch's former style as in "the high and mighty Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary." This time they left out the "high and mighty" part and it was just plain "Prince Charles Philip Arthur George."

I assume that this was done at the King's direction.

LadyEloise1 · 09/10/2022 19:59

Thank you @Maireas for the new thread and @NiqueNique for the title.

Does anyone remember @QueenoftheAndals ?
She was a great contributor to the Royal style threads but left Mumsnet.
I wonder if perhaps she has reconsidered, rejoined and namechanged and is back on here, posting again.

NiqueNique · 09/10/2022 20:00

Oh my goodness no, I hadn’t noticed that! Personally I think it should be in there. Otherwise what’s the point - one is either destined to be King, and high and mighty with it, or one might as well not bother with any of it.

(Slightly tongue-in-cheek of course. But I don’t really think you get to have it both ways. Go big or go home.)

Serenster · 09/10/2022 20:03

Thanks for the new thread Maireas!

Back to a couple of points we were discussing on the last thread, here’s another example of the Queen Mother been done a complete disservice by the fashions of the 1920s. Here she is with Bertie in 1921 when dresses still had waists, and then on their honeymoon not long afterwards when the new aesthetic had landed. 😕

And secondly, @gluenotsoup , here’s a link to a Mail article with some excellent Royal Doppelgängers for you. I’m always struck by how much of a Hanoverian throwback Lord Frederick Windsor is…

I can’t help but think that with an eyebrow and bra intervention, the QM probably wouldn’t have acquired such a mean nickname from her in-laws (although I think they were pretty mean about everyone, tbh).
But the 20s definitely did done do her wrong!

justasking111 · 09/10/2022 20:08

She was a bonny lass figure wise, not a flat chested skinny Minnie like Wallis who I thought quite ugly

Wallis's style made her a bit "jolie laide" as the French would say.

Maireas · 09/10/2022 20:20

Oh, I think Wallis and Edward would have found a mean nickname for her whatever she looked like.

Thank you for the new thread and fab title!!

I did read that the coronation will still involve the golden coach but I wondered if anyone would mind if I nab it when not in use? I mean it's roomy enough for shopping and distinctive enough to spot in a car park. Happy to share if anyone else would like to borrow it on occasion......

RomainingCalm · 09/10/2022 20:23

Thank you as always for the new thread @Maireas. 👑

Wallis was very plain but knew how to wear clothes with style. The QM didn't have much luck with SiLs - apparently Princess Marina looked down on her too!
