Marina was a terrible snob!

This is an interesting 5min read about the commission for Queen Elizabeth's coronation gown.

It also led me to this one - Flowers of the Fields of France - which I thought was rather beautiful.

I can believe it, based solely on pictures of her! She has a real look about her. That’s probably really unfair of me as she may have just had Resting Bitch Face, but I’ve never looked at a picture of her and thought, what a pleasant looking individual.

frugalkitty · 09/10/2022 20:35

Thank you Maireas I've got quite the collection now. Prince in the airing cupboard? Yep. Spencer tiara? Yep. Osbourne House? Yep. Sceptre? Yep. Golden Cinderella carriage? Yep. Engagement rings with history attached? Those too. Covering all bases there I reckon. Just need to find me a nuclear bunker and I'm ready for Armageddon 😂

I know what you mean, Marina always looks like she's smirking in her portraits.

KillingMeDeftly · 09/10/2022 20:38

Maybe the QM got on better with Princess Alice, who outlived even her.

SenecaFallsRedux · 09/10/2022 21:07

I think Marina was proud of her own royal lineage and viewed her sisters-in-law as perhaps lesser. Somehow, I doubt that the daughters of a Scottish Earl and a Scottish duke, both with royal lineage themselves, were too bothered.

Supposedly, Marina had reservations about her daughter-in-law and had hoped for a more elevated marriage for the Duke of Kent. Also, evidently, Princess Alexandra was in the running as a possible bride for Harald of Norway, but both she and Harald had other ideas. I'm sure Marina, would have preferred the future king of Norway to the younger son of an Earl.

StartupRepair · 09/10/2022 21:51

Thanks for the new thread. Interesting that the QM was one of the generation where so many men had been killed in WW1 that lots of women just didn't marry at all. She did all right!

I remember reading about the Duke of KENT something dodgy about his death. Rumour has it there was a woman on the plane. It was all hushed up

justasking111 · 09/10/2022 21:59

Queen Mary of Teck was a very interesting woman. Poor relations her father a Croatian short of money. Engaged to heir who died so married the spare. Who apparently adored her.

I don't know if there was anything dodgy about his death but there was plenty dodgy about his life! Apparently he shagged anything that moved and was considered "not safe in taxis".

Maireas · 09/10/2022 22:31

I don't think anything was proven about his death in that plane, but he was something of a dissolute character.
I think Mary of Teck is fascinating, I've read a couple of biographies of her.

Hi, can I join?

The Stephen Poliakoff film called “The Lost Prince” gives an interesting insight into the Duke Of Kent as a boy.

Also, I didn’t realise how much King Charles looks like his grandmother until I saw the photo of her in the white dress.

lollipoprainbow · 09/10/2022 22:41

@JustanotherBerkshiremum loved the lost prince would love to watch again, I cried buckets over it.

susiebluebell · 09/10/2022 22:44

Checking in and thanks for the new thread, which is already off to a cracking start!

Maireas · 09/10/2022 22:45

That was quite an intriguing film, Poliakoff was quite sensitive to Mary, I thought, and George (DoK).

Thanks for the new thread @Maireas & great title @NiqueNique

Well my Mum has touched the gold coach courtesy of Great Uncle Bob giving her & my Dad a guided tour of downstairs/basements/tunnels of BP.
Well know you know who I am now (had to name change just in case because of a completely different thread) but I did tell a couple of people on our thread as didn't want my tiaras being purloined 😂

@frugalkitty just been talking to a very old friend who now lives in Norway.
Haakon & Mette -Marit & the others are very much liked there.
And I told my friend about your kidnapping of a certain hottie! My friend gets our sense of humour so I think eventually the whole of Norway will get to know about Airing Cupboardgate 😂🤣

Thanks for this. Adding his autobiography to my reading list.

Northernlurker · 09/10/2022 23:34

I've always thought it quite handy for Prince Michael that his mother had died before he met Marie Christine. I think they would not have found each other soul mates!

eggandonion · 10/10/2022 00:03

I also read the threads and appreciate the other worldlinessof tiaras and coat dresses. Im looking forward to a state banquet soon, and a coronation which had better be fabulous !
I am amazed at how much the royals have packed in to the last month they and the staff need a long weekend somewhere.

SenecaFallsRedux · 10/10/2022 00:08

A little historical tidbit that I discovered when I was poking around those accession proclamations: Queen Victoria's was provisional, subject to the possible pregnancy of Queen Adelaide, the widow of William IV. Adelaide was 44, nearly 45 and had several unsuccessful births and pregnancies so it was unlikely, but that was something that I had not thought about, a consideration when an heir presumptive takes the throne. Evidently it was not thought necessary when Elizabeth II ascended, her mother clearly past childbearing age.

lollipoprainbow · 10/10/2022 04:05

Mary of Tecks mother was a scary looking lady bit like queen Victoria.
