@SenecaFallsRedux 1770s fancy dress , love it ! Having worn the awful 1970s fashions as a child I would definitely not want to revisit that decade!

I’m not sure if this is the right place for it and apologies if it’s not ok, but with talk of the QM etc, I think there is rumoured to be a “prequel” to the Netflix series The Crown which would be very interesting I think. Does anyone on here watch The Crown, are the jewels, tiaras etc faithfully reproduced?

RomainingCalm · 10/10/2022 13:42

I love that 1770s fancy dress story @SenecaFallsRedux. 😀

Thank you @Maireas for the new thread and @NiqueNique for the title.

Does anyone remember @QueenoftheAndals ?
She was a great contributor to the Royal style threads but left Mumsnet.
I wonder if perhaps she has reconsidered, rejoined and namechanged and is back on here, posting again.

I remember @QueenoftheAndals. I think she started the threads!

The Cartier Bracelet tiara is beautiful! So sleek and modern, by tiara standards at least. 😄

LadyEloise1 · 10/10/2022 13:51

QEQM had some eyebrows in her youth !
I love the 1920's style and loved her wedding dress, her veil and her flowers.
I must have been born in the wrong era Smile

It is, so wearable too. A shame we have only seen it as bracelets since the Duchess of York became the Queen. Though we have probably seen more of it than any other tiara as HMQ often wore it as bracelets.

I suspect that is partly why we didn't see it as a tiara, it isn't very queenly, more suitable for a young Princess but the Queen liked the bracelets and wore them often. Perhaps we will see it on Charlotte in future.

Speaking of coronation dresses, I'm not going to be happy if this slimmed down business KC has in mind means that we don't get to see some embellished and bling enhance dressing from Camilla and Catherine.

Plus in American English the term "lounge suit" conjures up something along these lines.

I think Charles should wear this to his coronation, and if William, Harry and Edward can wear similar in coordinating colours then even better. It would be a coronation to remember!

667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast · 10/10/2022 14:09

@LadyEloise1 i think the QM probably was a lot more attractive in real life, she had very beautiful eyes that had a darker ring round the iris called a limbic ring (think Liz Taylor had similar ) it’s not always apparent in the photos of her but you can see it on this one of her as a very young girl
@KillingMeDeftly
Lol 😂 at the suits for coronation!

KillingMeDeftly · 10/10/2022 14:12

She actually looks a bit like a young Liz Taylor in that photo.

LadyEloise1 · 10/10/2022 14:12

QEQM is very pretty in that photo @667TheNeighbourOfTheBeast, but even at a young age she had strong eyebrows.
Ahead of her time.
They are so fashionable today.

The Wikipedia entry on Mrs Greville's reputation is hilariously snarky:

"Following Greville's death, Queen Elizabeth, who inherited the bulk of Greville's huge collection of jewellery, described her as "so shrewd, so kind and so amusingly unkind, so sharp, such fun, so naughty; altogether a real person, a character, utterly Mrs Ronald Greville".

By contrast, Sir Cecil Beaton described her as "a galumphing, greedy, snobbish old toad who watered at her chops at the sight of royalty ... and did nothing for anybody except the rich".

Rudyard Kipling is thought to have called her a slug.

James Lees-Milne, in his diaries, commented: "Everyone is agog to hear the terms of Mrs G's will. She was a lady who loved the great because they were great, and apparently had a tongue dipped in gall. I remember old Lady Leslie exclaiming, 'Maggie Greville! I would sooner have an open sewer in my drawing room!'"

I love this, especially the bit about Kipling calling her a slug! She certainly sounds like she made an impression.

Maireas · 10/10/2022 16:55

What brilliant quotations about Mrs Greville! She had an eye for the gems, though!

Has anyone got dibs on the Greville Festoon or the Peardrop earrings?

If not can I have them please?

Thank you very much for posting this, I hadn’t heard of Mrs Greville before this thread, it’s very interesting. This may sound like a silly question to you more knowledgeable ladies, but would the earrings have been pierced or screw back ? I’m not sure why I need to know this, just nosey !

Maireas · 10/10/2022 17:44

That's a good question about the earrings - I would assume pierced, as that's more secure, but someone more knowledgeable than me may know otherwise!

I'm afraid I beat you to it on the Greville Festoon necklace which I nabbed just last week!

Grin Grin Grin at that Wikipedia page!!

Lovely link between Mrs Greville and Camilla too...

Damnit! You lucky thing, perhaps if I get the Peardrop earrings we could come to an agreement regarding occasional loans 🤔

MotherofPearl · 10/10/2022 19:02

An sharing arrangement sounds reasonable to me @JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon. The peardrops are pretty spectacular too, so happy to borrow those, and in return let you have a go with the Greville Festoon. It looks heavy enough to induce headaches so perhaps it's just as well I share it. Grin

Maireas · 10/10/2022 19:35

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon - Greville Peardrop earrings ✔️

OP posts:
justasking111 · 10/10/2022 19:56

It did occur to me that we'll not see some of the tiaras again because they're damned uncomfortable/heavy.

It's not a pair of shoes you can slip off under the table 😂

gluenotsoup · 10/10/2022 20:28

Thanks for the new thread @Maireas !
I’ve enjoyed catching up, and love the QM’s bracelet tiara. I think she was actually very pretty in her youth, in a sweet and wholesome way, and yes to the beautiful eyes with a limbic ring. My dds have these, especially my youngest, as do both dh and I. I think whoever said figure and look wise she was just in the wrong decade was absolutely right. I often think that about me too, I think. I was a teenager in the 90’s when it was all grunge and so on, and it really wasn’t me. At that age I was very slim and just looked rubbish in that type of stuff.
Anyway, this is my Grandmother, probably late 20’s early 1930’s, and I thought of her when looking at the Qm in a similar era so thought I’d just share with you all🙂

Stylish lady! I really like a lot of the 20s styles, I know not everyone does, and I actually like QEQM wedding dress!
I was a teenager in the 70s and absolutely hated the clothes!
