Adding pic of classic rug beating stand 😚I keep meaning to clean my wool mats (flat woven) in the new snow but never get around to it if we ever have any good clean light snow...

I don't mind the new design but I can see people are Up In Arms.

Some time ago I was looking for advice how to remove stains from cream wool blankets and sweaters and read somewhere on the net that frost bleaches wool. Have yet to be in the right place at the right time (it doesn’t seem to get cold enough in London). I wonder if this has the same root as snow cleaning in Sweden. I love the idea of snow-cleaned rugs smelling nice Bani . Any idea how this works? Freezing kills bugs but how does this affect stains etc? Suspect Swedish snow is colder, cleaner (and more available) than in UK…

Floisme · 21/04/2022 08:56

Ha you would think that bo and now you've reminded me you still owe me an Ibiza wedding to a mail order toy boy.

microbius The Carrier jacket feels sturdy and well made - the seams are so well finished you could almost wear it inside out. At £45 it's a steal and I feel slightly guilty at buying from the children's range. I have to say though that, if it had been the adult version, I'd have flinched at paying £115, because it 's an unlined cotton drill jacket in a very simple design that I could probably make myself. Yes it's made in Norfolk and it's still less than Toast prices but I do think there's a bit of a Monty Don premium going on. Community Clothing do a similar one also made in the UK for £89. Sorry I've tried to link but it keeps taking me to YouTube. Anyway that feels to me like a fair price but unfortunately I could see it was going to be too long for me plus I didn't want denim.

That said, I'll definitely keep a close eye on Carrier Company.

Floisme · 21/04/2022 09:31

Sorry, without that link, the bit about the Community Clothing jacket isn't clear. It's a similar style to the Carrier one, still made in the UK and for £89, but unfortunately it's too long for me plus it's denim which I didn't want.

botemp · 21/04/2022 09:49

Ah yes the Ibiza wedding, I think it was to a cabana boy. I suppose you can get your two new lovers to walk you down the aisle. Monty Don can officiate (insert grin emoji here, I didn't know I liked them so much now that I can't use them, sad emoji)

Plus a lovely Ukrainian women has been teaching me some of their embroidery so I can finally make myself a Vyshyvanka that I've wanted for years (I'd love a Vita Kin one but can't bring myself to pay the ££££ asking price and I refuse to consider a Chinese crap imitation, a proper Ukrainian one was always hard to source and that still would have been a couple of hundred euros by the time it gets here) so I've probably got a proper boho wedding guest outfit in my future, just don't get married too soon, I'm a slow embroiderer.

Magical snow cleaning powers, is it maybe something to do with the sun bleaching powers being extra reflected when there's enough snow? And I assume powdered snow allows you to surface clean without soaking the whole thing? Although I'm totally prepared to believe gnomes are involved.

Intrigued by the thread title so just place-marking for later...

Mm: You'll have to ask Micro if snow cleaning rugs works since I've never managed it - but I thought it was mostly a smart way to "gather" the dust out. It won't be removing stains - I can't imagine that frost would remove stains? A rag rug is traditionally scrubbed with soap by the lakeside in summer dontchaknow.
Anyway, snow = surface cleaning, exactly. And I've seen it recommended for wool mostly (what in Swedish is called röllakan mats sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C3%B6llakan).

Flo, love that jacket from CC. Well done on thinking outside the box and into the childrens' section.

Bo, love Ukranian embroidery, best of luck!

mm47 · 21/04/2022 17:04

-Bo wow the Vita Kin Vyshyvanka are beautiful but ££££ - if you can make your own it will be amazing. Maybe you could wear it to Flo’s bigamous wedding in Ibiza, surely that would be boho enough?

mm47 · 21/04/2022 17:08

I just found this is YouTube video explaining about snow cleaning, sorry I can’t post a link but if you cut and paste. Apparently it really works…

microbius · 22/04/2022 10:46

The vyshivanka is beautiful, especially blue on red.

I was recently thinking that the UK wouldn't have accepted a woman as Monty Don. Misogyny, ageism, etc, but I can't really imagine a woman in his place. She would be considered either too "posh" and polished for large TV public to relate to her, or not "posh" and womanly and beautiful enough. People accept of Monty what I think an aged woman wouldn't be forgiven for. Sonly maybe if it were a programme about art narrated by an artist engaged in it...

Redandblue11 · 22/04/2022 13:35

[hates mn ‘improved’ site, just managed to log back in after I was kicked out and lost password and couldn’t be bothered to reset]

I have been watching how to clean rugs on YouTube videos , snow, beating, all of it involved.

I am also saving for the next MH sale 😁
I also saw that in the V&A there will be an exhibition of African fashion (cannot remember if that is the exact name), looks very interesting and i might pay a visit , I think it opens in July.

hope the skin issues resolve promptly Xing.

1frenchfoodie · 23/04/2022 11:50

Can I come out of lurk mode and ask how tall you are @Floisme ? I love the Carrier Company jackets ( and the even more expensive dutch trousers) but my budget doesnt run to the adult version and at 5ft3 and size 8 maybe I don’t need it given the point is to be a bit cropped and boxy.

Thanks for the introduction to vyshyvanka @botemp , they look gorgeous. My head has been in a few Norwegian bunad embroidery sites of late as I plan a move to Oslo shortly. Can’t be taking up snow cleaning there though as I doubt it can deal with my main issue of black lab fur.

Floisme · 23/04/2022 19:14

Holy hell what have they done to the app? I’ve had to log in the old way.

1frenchfoodie welcome and stick around. I’m 5’3 too, normally a size 10 on the hips but shoulders and across my back are more like an 8 or even a 6. All the adult versions I tried ended at the chunkiest part of my thighs, which I don’t mind if a jacket is fitted but, when it’s a boxy shape, I prefer it a shorter. So give it a go but watch the sleeves - they’re ok on me but not generous. I’m eyeing up the Dutch trousers too but they’ll have to wait till I’ve got more spare cash.

mico interesting question. The only female equivalent I can think of to Monty Don, in terms of age, class, signature style and being at ease in her own skin was Barbara Woodhouse, whose dog training programme was cult viewing for a while in the early 80s, but I doubt it would get commissioned now.

XingMing · 23/04/2022 20:44

Barbara Woodhouse did not register as a style icon, gulp. Don't forget that Monty Don was a jeweller before he was a gardener, and his aesthetic choose button was vairy refined before he hit the small screen. His clothing choices are gorgeous, and incredibly sophisticated, yet never ever loud.

Hello 1 frenchfoodie. Nice to meet you!

banivani · 23/04/2022 20:51

Popping on to show you a photo of Sweden’s currently oldest person, Gunborg Hancock, 110 years old today. Such style!

1frenchfoodie · 23/04/2022 21:25

Thanks @Floisme , sounds as though the childrens line could work. I don’t think I have particularly long arms but can use the time they take to restock the navy to check against other shorties.

So stylish @banivani - and her posture make me straighten up too.

Thanks for the welcome @XingMing I used to post a bit eons ago but with homeschooling and then a switch to full time homeworking I lost my sartorial mojo.

Floisme · 23/04/2022 23:38

Not a style icon but what I meant was BW had her own ‘Balmoral chic’ way of dressing, which wasn’t remotely fashionable but it was part of who she was, and she wasn’t interested in toning it down or trying to appear more relatable. Whereas if she were around now they’d probably set a stylist on her.

What a fab picture bani. Inspirational.

mm47 · 24/04/2022 09:51

Hello frenchfoodie I feel your pain with black Labrador fur getting stuck in carpets.

bani your photo of the 110 year old proves that we can be old and stylish. She’s got great posture and looks fantastic- #stylegoals

XingMing · 24/04/2022 12:03

Black Labrador owners of the world share your burden!

Having said I couldn't bring myself to even try on clothes right now, I stopped by the nice independent shop opposite my hairdresser, and came out with the basis of my holiday wardrobe and a cheap pretty dress for the nephew's garden party-themed wedding in the Languedoc. A very nice black linen shirt-jacket from Bitte Kai Rand (from the sale rail); this dress from a new-to-me company Terre Rouge, and a pair of lime linen baggy trousers from Cut Loose, a San Francisco company cutloose.com/. Nothing radical but useful hot weather clothes.

mm47 · 24/04/2022 14:50

From today’s ST. Do I detect a slight Monty D influence?

Xing a Mr O Wilde used to say “I can resist anything but temptation” and that definition is true for shopping….

XingMing · 24/04/2022 15:12

Everything will be useful, at home and on holiday. As we are hoping to retire sometime this year it's being deferred with every week as we have so many irons in various fires right now but it is going to happen, I am thinking I need more light loose stuff as I am covered for wet cold weather. Just need to sort a ton of loose ends, and relocate DMIL closer to us, and ignore the ensuing shit storm family row.

mm47 · 24/04/2022 22:07

Sorry Xing I was hoping to raise a smile (not cast “nasturtiums”… I am very wildean in my attitude to temptations of the retail kind so am in. no position to judge…)

XingMing · 25/04/2022 14:06

I wasn't taking humbrage mm47, I really wasn't! And I succumbed to the temptations, not you, although my fall back was going to be a dress acquired for DS's Christening (he's 23 this summer) and the jacket from a suit bought in 1985. I'll take the dress in any case because it's easy to pack and wash and wear on repeat. We're hoping to spend more time in sunnier climates when we can escape from work, and summer clothes need washing more often I find. -

Redandblue11 · 25/04/2022 14:34

Admiring the photo of Swedish oldest person ! How much style. She could have worn any jacket … but turning up the sleeves like that of that very body jacket on that liberty type print blouse. Love it.

Now I am in the Sotheby’s mail list (just to look around and daydream). And saw Karl Lagerfeld’s state going on auction. I got inspired by some of his sunglasses collection.

Here is also a preview of the V&A exhibition about African fashion here. Which I am definitely going to pay a visit later on the year.
