What do the cool mums wear?

518 replies

Jacaranda75 · 30/12/2021 10:36

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

Prior to children, I had work clothes, going out clothes and slobbish at home clothes.

I still have the above & both pre dc & after dc I have casual clothes for days off, days out etc.

@woodlandarchitect

Is it true that Doc Martens are no longer “cool / fashionable”?

On another thread recently they were referred to as common and cheap!

And to be fair - since I read that comment I’ve seen DM’s everywhere on everyone. Definitely more popular than converse and Vans. I guess the sheer popularity of them makes them uncool now!

Full disclaimer: I am definitely not cool so am happy to wear mine Grin

Cool people in Doc Martens are not wearing them because they're fashionable, and wouldn't stop wearing them if they thought they weren't. Cool people in Doc Martens wear them because it's what they wear.

It is quite easy to tell if an influencer-type is posing in brand-new shiny, half-unlaced Dr Martens because they've seen someone else in them, or if someone is a few years into a pair that are just "the shoes by the front door every day".

Parker231 · 01/01/2022 17:32

What makes a particular brand of trainers ‘cool’? Surely a white trainer is just that - a white trainer- does the same job whether they cost £10 or £100?

So does a plastic Casio watch, a Rotary and a Rolex. If you're buying a clothing item to "do a job" then you're probably not interested in
Parker231 · 01/01/2022 17:44

@ToykotoLosAngeles - I have a Rolex for everyday and a Garmin for the gym - different purposes. My only trainers are those I wear for running or for a gym class. They were chosen for comfort not style or price.

lightisnotwhite · 01/01/2022 17:53

Well style needs to flip doesn’t it. White leather trainers and the flip to coloured suede trainers/animal print/metallic. Nike Air Force loved by the kids so done to death. Vejas are a tiny bit different whilst being essentially white trainers.
90’s fashion us back. Checked shirts and DMs go well with looser jeans if leggings and baggy top.
Another 5 years and it will be low rise cargos again

WinterDeWinter · 01/01/2022 18:05

I have a vintage Rolex datejust and a ‘gold’ 80a Casio. Both are cool on different ways.

WinterDeWinter · 01/01/2022 18:12

My trainers are grey Nike hi tops x obscure Japanese designer from 10 years ago. I do like cool but I think my version is not what other ppl consider cool.

Right, proving my point. I don't class a Garmin as the same as "a watch". So why did you buy a Rolex and not a £30 no brand from Argos? Same reason as I don't buy sweaty plastic £10 trainers to wear 5 to 6 days a week. Most women who wear trainers a lot like ones that are a certain colour, shape, hi tops or low tops depending on outfits. I only run if I'm being chased!

Cotswoldmama · 01/01/2022 19:35

I think cool mum's don't wear what other mums wear they follow fashion but only what suits their figure. I get my fashion inspiration not from other mums but from what people younger than me wear!

Why do you all want to look like everyone else ?

@BreakfastOfWaffles

Round our way it's either the Sweaty Betty look - patterned leggings and gilet - or Hush for the "relaxed glamour look". And they all own a pair of pristine white leather look trainers and a big leopard print scarf.
How are they always so white? Mine are always grubby in under are week.

I have a work colleague who I asked this of his trainers are spotless apparently he never wears them if it's raining and he uses flash bleach wipes on the rubber to keep them spotless.

It’s human nature, and fashion, and.. not a bad thing.

@BlairWaldorfLovesShopping

What’s the big deal with wearing sunglasses in winter? For those of us with pale eyes, the slightest hint of winter sunshine means that they’re necessary, especially when driving Confused
I wondered that too! I have sensitive eyes and wear sunglasses at the slightest hint of sunlight all year around. I wasn't aware it is not a done thing in winter!!
Unmerited · 02/01/2022 03:03

Sunglasses are for bright light, not heat. The sun can be dazzling in the winter. People are weird.

Pangolin44 · 02/01/2022 03:21

Things that aren't cool;

Watches
Trainers
Feet
Tassles
Stretchy
Green things
Legs
Concrete
Prints
Plain
Wavy
Straight
Faces
No faces
Ankles
Overhangs
Offset insets
Wide stairs

Things that are cool;

David Bowie
Leaves
Square
Translucent
Ripple
Whitebait
Fuzzy felt
Wave particle duality
Moss
73°
Grubby
Lenses
Nits
Aspidistra

Think that's covered it.

1ittlegreen · 02/01/2022 03:28

But aspidistra is green, it will need to go on the not cool list.

I personally think anything you can buy at John Lewis is not cool.

Pangolin44 · 02/01/2022 03:33

Don't question the list. It's definitive.

GettingStuffed · 02/01/2022 05:37

Cool is not about wearing fashion trends, it's more about having your own style. Unfortunately if you find someone who you think's cool and copy their look it won't look cool .
