What do the cool mums wear?

Jacaranda75 · 30/12/2021 10:36

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

@Realitysucks not intended as a dig at you but I find the “I’ve given up cos I’m old” perspective even worse than the “you’re all so shallow, I last bought a t-shirt in 1997”.

Frustrating as the superiority of those that are happy wearing whatever they pull out the laundry basket, I get that not everyone is interested in clothes. In the same way I have no interest in gaming or Star Wars (although I tend to refrain jumping on threads relating to these topics to tell posters how dull they are Hmm )

But if you don’t once enjoyed clothes and fashion but now feel past it at 40? I don’t get it at all!

PegasusReturns · 31/12/2021 21:46

And given I referenced my 18 yr old, it’s a fair guess I’m over 30 Grin

JedEye · 31/12/2021 22:19

Be careful of those floor length coats if you’re short like me. You may find you don’t look cool at all but more like a Sith Lord or dalek.

liveforsummer · 31/12/2021 22:23

@Realitysucks

Why ? Interested to know, because I don't care or because im older ? Genuinely interested in whether everyone commenting is under 30?

Apparently according to my 19 year old I was a cool mum, at 24- 35 his friends all thought I was great which for him was great until the age of 11 when he then found it awkward when his mates were telling him his
Mum was fit 😂🤣😂🤣 ( I’m also nothing special so not sure why they would think that) safe to say my youngest wont have the same problem 😂🤣😂

I'm 42 so definitely way past your age assumption
TheMoth · 31/12/2021 22:26

I think it's the word 'cool' that has prompted the spikes. Stylish has different connotations. 'Cool' implies a judgement and belonging (or not). I'd have thought that being cool meant NOT dressing like everyone else.

Although personally, I would judge your coolness based on your music collection Grin because I'm still 14

I'm 5'8'' and dc have called me both maleficent and snape in my long duvet coat 😆. Fwiw I bought it to stand on playground duty at the eastern coast Scottish school I work at so style didn't actually come in to it on that occasion
Notwithittoday · 31/12/2021 22:28

Padded coats, duvet style seem to be in. Prob not the most flattering though. I try just not to look too dowdy, I don’t expect to look cool though really.

DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 31/12/2021 22:45

I don’t care if I look like a Sith Lord (although this could be something to aspire to?), or a dalek, as long as I’m warm.

cherish123 · 31/12/2021 23:04

@liveforsummer Snape and Malecifent - that's so funny🤣

I've never heard of most of these brands of clothes. I usuay wear a sweatshirt, M&S skinny jeans, Adidas gazelles and a next puffa coat. I'm 5ft tall with kids size feet there ain't a lot to choose from. Isn't sweaty Betty really expensive?

Gbtch · 01/01/2022 00:49

Any Doc Martens

borisisaknob · 01/01/2022 00:52

Oversized Sunglasses and don't get out of the car. Job done

NerrSnerr · 01/01/2022 00:57

Any Doc Martens
Finally! I'm cool. These are my work shoes, my cherry docs. The rest of me isn't cool but I'll live with this.
Vanilli1978 · 01/01/2022 01:00

A dry robe over gym wear/jeans seems to be the in thing at our school with statement sunglasses

Ostagazuzulum · 01/01/2022 03:36

Either uniform for work if I'm coming/ straight to work or if I'm off I normally do school run and straight to gym / out for exercise so I'll wear very Lairy exercise gear (tikiboo) as I have a theory that the louder my exercise clothes are (think neon) then if I get mugged out running or hill walking more likely people will notice remember me!

Id love to look cooler on school run as it's feel nice but I'm always so busy!

threatmatrix · 01/01/2022 09:15

Cool mums don’t wear anything that’s ever advertised on Mumsnet. Frumpiest stuff I’ve ever seen.

BBOA · 01/01/2022 09:30

Just had to Google Beja trainers! Never heard of them! I am sooo uncool! Wasn’t ever my look, but it used to be Superga (?) trainers and joules ahoy at our primary!

pinkstripeycat · 01/01/2022 09:32

I think it’s what you look like, not what you wear. I’ve been training with a PT for the last 2 years and despite being over 50 I think I look (certainly feel) better than I did when my kids were at primary school when you’re a mum in the playground

Bangolads · 01/01/2022 10:46

I worked as stylist, I never dressed people to look ‘cool’. What you like is subjective and we’d start there. However I always advised people to take small pieces of current fashion and incorporate them into more classic looks. Basically looking out dated ages you.

woodlandarchitect · 01/01/2022 14:30

Is it true that Doc Martens are no longer “cool / fashionable”?

On another thread recently they were referred to as common and cheap!

And to be fair - since I read that comment I’ve seen DM’s everywhere on everyone. Definitely more popular than converse and Vans. I guess the sheer popularity of them makes them uncool now!

Full disclaimer: I am definitely not cool so am happy to wear mine Grin

TeaAddict235 · 01/01/2022 15:50

@mynameiscalypso

I also think some posters are taking 'school run' literally. In my mind, it's more of a catch all term for the kind of boring stuff you have to do with children like go to the park or take them swimming or whatever. Prior to children, I had work clothes, going out clothes and slobbish at home clothes. The transition to a new type of occasion - toddler groups, school runs etc - was hard especially when you throw in a post-partum body which may or may not be the same as it was before. For people who are interesting in fashion and style (or even if you're not), it can be quite challenging as part of the wider difficulty there can be in finding your identity as a parent.
I think that you have spoken the most amount of sense on this thread so far.

To be fair it is winter so more boot weather than trainers weather!
WinterDeWinter · 01/01/2022 16:56

Surely 'school run' just refers to the fact that it's where you most often see a cross section of women? I don't think people literally have school run outfits ..
