What do the cool mums wear?

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

I think it’s all about attitude rather than exactly what you wear. I’m always in jeans and jumper, I’m ready for work though so I’ve gone through full morning routine.
Somedays I feel overdressed, some I don’t.

The people I notice looking good are in 1 of 3 categories all clearly confident about what they have done.

  1. Dresses and tights, a nice dress with hair and makeup done always looks good. It’s clearly a few of their work attire but I can see it on at a bar having a day drink.
  2. Jeans, smart top, hair/makeup done- leather jacket. It just looks cool if it fits well.
3 gym type, you look active and if you have the body for it, you can get away with messy hair/no makeup as you look like you attacking the day after school run, not attacking the washing or whatever’s in the fridge 😂

@lollipoprainbow

What's wrong with just being and looking like a mum why does everything have to be 'cool'.
What do mums look like? 😂😂

I saw two younger women in the Covid queue at Waitrose wearing veja, They gave been the only trainers I thought “ they look nice”. No idea they were a thing.
Got some on eBay for £25. Brill. Only I look like a dick in them. Turns out my clumpy boots actual make me look cool.

lightisnotwhite · 31/12/2021 18:44

I have just bought a Paige Raundi jumper because Naga Munchetti looked good in it. I look like a dick in that too.

schoolsoutforever · 31/12/2021 18:45

All this stuff sounds very expensive - vejas, Golden Goose (?), Gucci etc. I just don’t think most mothers (cool or otherwise) are likely to be able to afford these kinds of clothes. I still like what I wore years ago - nice vintage stuff (sometimes from charity shops or eBay etc). Sometimes wide legs, flares etc. Nice trainers but not particularly expensive ones. Mostly work wear as that’s where I’m heading most days. I’m not cool though so probably don’t know nothing.

Londoncallingme · 31/12/2021 18:47

If you have to ask you won’t pull it off…there are lots of cool mums at my sons school, all dressed in very different styles from Victoria Beckham types to Helena Bonham Carter - it’s not what you wear, it’s how you wear it - If you buy into the yummy mummy uniform, ya just ain’t cool.

Parker231 · 31/12/2021 18:48

Canada Goose jackets are a product of animal cruelty. Hopefully Mn will have more sense than to wear their products.

Flowerpower23 · 31/12/2021 18:55

Cool is a mindset, not a fashion choice. Not speaking from experience

mamabear715 · 31/12/2021 18:56

Another here who has no idea who Liz & Amanda are, or the Vega? trainers.. I don't possess skinny jeans or leggings or anything remotely sporty as I don't think they are flattering at all. I don't have any trainers.. I like ankle boots with a little heel to give me a bit of height!
I don't have anything fake leather. I have flared jeans because they are more flattering to my figure. I don't buy flannel shirts - I don't want to look like a guy!
I tend not to buy things that have a 'name'.
HEY! Maybe I'M cool? ;-)

Lolamento · 31/12/2021 19:01

The people I find cool are not even aware of their coolness. They just are. Not point copying them because if you do not have you do not have it. The school gates mums I met were not cool but some really though they were.

I actually bought a sparkly suit that Claudia Winkleman wore on SCD. I look a twat too.
5128gap · 31/12/2021 19:08

In my experience the women considered the 'cool mums' are generally the most attractive ones. The prettiest, with the nicest hair and figures. It's not their clothes that make them cool, they just make whatever they choose to wear seem cool, because they look so great in it. I don't think it matters at all what brand or style your clothes are, it really is just how good you look.

everythingbackbutyou · 31/12/2021 19:08

@liveforsummer, I have grey-blue eyes and always bring my sunglasses because I'm sensitive to light and get bothered by it easily. However, I didn't realize until this thread that it was a bona fide 'thing' either. I feel vindicated!

Mollysocks · 31/12/2021 19:12

I don't buy flannel shirts - I don't want to look like a guy!

Converse hideous on over 25s, flannel shirts making you look like a guy. Some weird outdated opinions on this thread.

Flannel shirts too, not jeans or trainers or hoodies or puffs coats but specifically flannel shirts, make you look like a guy. Grin

everythingbackbutyou · 31/12/2021 19:15

@PegasusReturns, I am enveloped in fury when I take my teen daughter to Urban Outfitters these days, hissing venomous things like "It's not new, you know. I feel like I've wandered into 1992" etc. etc. Minus the slip dresses, I still pretty much dress the same now though.

4pmwinetimebebeh · 31/12/2021 19:16

I don’t know about cool but I like the think I dress well and for my figure, I enjoy choosing what I wear. I work part time so for the school run it’s a mix of what I’m wearing to work and my off days. Things like:

Jumper over dress with nice coat and ankle boots
Mom jeans with jumper tucked in with Nike Air Force trainers and gilet coat
Stripy top tucked into paper bag trousers with slip on shoes
Loose fitting dress with cardigan and trainers

Nothing crazy, nothing super on trend but I know what shapes suit me. I always wear a bit of make up, unless I’m taking the kids swimming! And make an effort to have my hair done, even if it’s a messy bun. My style has changed since having the kids but wanting to look nicely turned out etc hasn’t. Budget is definitely a limiting factor for any new stuff now though!!

PyongyangKipperbang · 31/12/2021 19:16

Truly sophisticated people wear what they like and dont give a stuff what anyone else thinks. The coolest mum in the playgroud at our school is my friend who is into heavy metal and dresses in that style. She doesnt give a toss about anyones opinion and as a result looks amazing because her confidence in herself shines through!

PearlyShamps · 31/12/2021 19:18

When a friend (a spritely and young looking 70 - think Lulu) asked the same question on Facebook recently the overwhelming majority said Nike, Airforce in triple white. My DD (14) wears them, I (47) wear them, and this friend bought them. They're for any age, but considered kinda cool, without being "try-hard". They span the generations, similar to Converse. Also the junior sizes go up to 5½, so I was able to get for £55, instead of £80 which is what ladies ones cost.

Mollysocks · 31/12/2021 19:18

I do think people are thinking cool is a synonym for stylish and it isn’t always the case. I think ‘cool’ is subjective too. To me someone cool does their own thing and doesn’t wear what is currently in, but looks a bit quirky and edgy. But what is cool to me is based on my opinion and someone else may just see them as odd dressers.

Gemma Cairney to me is cool, she wears colour (which I think not everyone can get away with) and her style is eclectic and quirky. I think she comes off as being confident in what she is wearing too so that adds to the cool, imo.

I think flannel shirts are back im afraid. DD12 has a selection in different styles all purchased from shein and is the envy of her mates. She definitely doesn't look like a guy
Jack80 · 31/12/2021 19:24

I’m the mum with jeans/jeggings/leggings and converse or dr martens. I do occasionally wear gym leggings and trainers.

Mollysocks · 31/12/2021 19:24

I agree @liveforsummer I was commenting on what a PP said about looking like a guy in them, that definitely wasn’t my opinion 😊

liveforsummer · 31/12/2021 19:25

Yeh i realised after I posted that it sounded like I thought it was your opinion - I definitely didn't
