What do the cool mums wear?

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

I don’t agree that people who look cool don’t care what other people think and don’t think about what they wear. The coolest looking people I know have studied and work in fashion. I’d say it takes quite a lot of time and money to look effortlessly cool.
I’m emerging back to the outside world from WFH to go on maternity leave so I might try and get together a couple of nice outfits. I really like the trench coat someone posted a pic of and like the look of Nike airforce triple white trainers.
There are some super cool Japanese mums from my son’s school. I think their outfits probably cost a fortune, but I love seeing what they wear.

@Mollysocks

So does a plastic Casio watch

The retro Casio watches are cool though! They might not be a Rolex but Rolexes (sp?) aren’t cool imo (expensive doesn’t automatically equal cool in my book) 😊

I class my Rolex as classic rather than cool - irreplaceable as it was my wedding present from DH as I didn’t want a ring. He also has a classic watch as my present to him.

@MouseySun

I like Amanda's style in terms fo what she wears, not her mannerism of course but I think she looks 'cool'.
She looks like she shops at Mint Velvet and The White Company? Perfectly nice but cool??
Haudyourwheesht · 04/01/2022 20:42

Amanda's too sexy to be school. The visible cleavage v- neck jumpers, skinny jeans and heels, bodycon dresses, look is quite dated I think.

I don't think anyone cares at our school. Very working class on the whole. Quite a lot of sports wear but not in the 'popping to the gym after this' way.

Two mums stand out to me. They are probably in their mid 40s and I would describe them as arty / quirky. One wears horn rimmed glasses, grey curls in a half top knot, teddy coat, rolled up mum jeans and black lace up ankle boots. The other wears lots of colour, has Amelie style hair, patterned jumpers over dresses with veja style trainers.

Generally, a good coat will make you look put together on the school run but sadly, when you're pushing a pram, juggling bags and it's pissing it down, you need a sensible coat with a hood that will stay up. Sadly, I think I'm and Ann. Or maybe a Kevin?

I would love to be like meg , all her looks work great

it's about wearing what fits & feeling comfortable in your clothes & having a sense of fun. cool is completely subjective.
i wear uniqlo men's jeans (better pockets)
basic turtleneck or baggy sweater or cardy & shirt
levi's trucker jacket under a hoodie
or leather jacket (ancient bomber)
or down when it is really cold
pumas
scarves
sunglasses from raybans to blue round rims or 50s science teacher

Buyitinbamboo · 06/01/2022 11:23

Coolest mums in our school are the ones that really lean into their personal style. There is leggings, trainers, puffy coat with baseball cap mum who always looks good. Another one wears mostly dungarees, quite arty, I couldn't tell you where she buys any of her clothes that looks good. Both very different looks but suit them

lightisnotwhite · 06/01/2022 18:01

I still think being noticeable thin makes a difference. That and hair.

I work with two people with “ eclectic” styles often wearing similar funky dresses, often with a bold use of colour..
One has funky well cut short hair and is super petite. The other has a bad short fringe ( not maintained) and is normal weight maybe a few pounds over.
One looks like she belongs in Sex and the City. Her clothes get complimented often. Clearly she has style and looks cool.
The other keeps getting mistaken for a 17 year old try hard drama student. No one ever mentions her clothes because it’s all a bit “look at me” cringe.

@lightisnotwhite Wow

you may not like it but I think she is right.

I have not changed my style in 30 years, you could call it eclectic, I prefer the Billy Connolly descriptor of Windswept and Interesting! But its only since I became a size 8 as opposed to my old size 22 that my clothes or hair or whatever get commented on.

Its not nice but there is a direct link between being slim and being considered attractive. Shouldnt be like that, but it is.

Innatenvi · 06/01/2022 23:58

Apparently I'm a cool mum and I look like I'm from the 70s half the time. I live in my Docs, have many piercings and blue hair. And I'm not thin either! I think just wear what you like and have confidence and then you'll be cool. It's not cool to try and be someone else.

GoLittleRockstar · 07/01/2022 16:43

@lightisnotwhite @PyongyangKipperbang

I don’t think anyone is disputing that is currently a current cultural feature for many to internalise hatred around weight and act accordingly both to themselves and others.

But it’s another thing to perpetuate that cultural feature and accept it as an unchanging permanent truth.

Culture and beauty standards vary and change.

I'm definitely pro sunglasses in winter,. Squinting into the early morning sun glare ain't for me.

It's funny that so many people are confused as to their purpose!

mellongoose · 08/01/2022 05:39

It's too muddy to be cool here! Wellies are required on most winter school runs.

And yes to sunglasses 🕶 in winter! The sun is lower in the sky and shining straight at you through the windscreen.
