What do the cool mums wear?

Jacaranda75 · 30/12/2021 10:36

Following on from the Mum Boot of Trainers thread, I am wondering, what do the cool mums wear? Are there any brands or items of clothing that are considered 'cool' for school run mums?

How about you just wear what you feel good in, hold your head high and walk with confidence. This is cool. Not trying to fit in with a bunch of empty headed label followers. Jeez

lightisnotwhite · 31/12/2021 19:43

@Thickasmincepie

I'd never heard of Vejas before this thread.

What makes them cool? Genuine question.
Question

I noticed them, as I said, before I realised they were a thing. The navy v and red tab back

What I liked was the simplicity, good but restrained use of colour/ logo and chunk without being too obvious. Then I googled and realised they were £100 odd quid so I guessed why suddenly everyone had a pair. Cheap on eBay though as lots of people find the long younger uncomfortable,

lightisnotwhite · 31/12/2021 19:45

“tongue” not “younger”

Nomorefuckstogive · 31/12/2021 19:54

@TeachesOfPeaches

Julia and Meg have the coolest styles in Motherland. Amanda looks rich and Liz just looks normal.
Meg 100%.
CouldThisReallyBe · 31/12/2021 19:56

Depends on your natural style. I think my best friend and I are both 'cool' in different ways and our styles are completely different. I think cool is more about how you put together, wear and carry off what makes you comfortable, rather than what it is.

@liveforsummer

Yeh i realised after I posted that it sounded like I thought it was your opinion - I definitely didn't
I’ve had too many gins tonight already, was probably me reading it wrong 😊Flowers

Where I live there are a lot of trendy people who have moved here from London. When it’s not really cold the mum’s wear long loose fitting floaty dresses often with a denim or leather jacket and boots. Other outfits I’ve seen are stylish tweed jackets with nice jeans and boots. They often wear those warm headbands (I’m not sure what they are called) with hair in a messy bun. Team with a trophy dog such as a cockapoo or dashing and bingo! 😂

PegasusReturns · 31/12/2021 20:22

@Mumkins42 why so rude about people interested in their personal style and the way they dress?

I’ve never heard of vejas - oops 🤦‍♀️

katieg03 · 31/12/2021 20:30

Some days Jeans, Zara gilet, jeans, boots. I love boots over trainers tbh. Cable knit cardis over hoodies. I love Zara long sleeved tops. Some days when I don't have to get out the car I'm in my lounge wear and a mum bun and wouldn't dare get out , my kids would be mortified. Otherwise on office days, heels, skirts or midi dresses and boots. I'm a total mixed bag. I went to Tesco once with a pen in my mum bun, don't get much cooler than that 🤣🤣

RantyAunty · 31/12/2021 20:41

I suppose my style is French and romantic.
When I have the time, I will sew or knit something.

Realitysucks · 31/12/2021 20:44

God I really think I'm too old
To give a . My first born I was 24 and more
Concerned about making it to the school gate on time after the rush from work to collect him as a single mum.

My second at 43 and whilst he is barley 2 I rock up to nursery in jeans and ugg boots with no
Make up and Most days I haven't even dried or brushed my hair ! 😂🤣😂🤦‍♀️

mummyofcutetwo · 31/12/2021 20:47

Lucy & Yak dungarees. But that’s only me at my kid’s school and one of the nursery children did mistake me for an elf on the run up to Christmas… 😂 Not that that’ll stop me!

Probably not the right thread for you.

I think the word cool has been taken to mean the in crowd

Agreed that’s how I took it cos the real cool kids defo aren’t answering S&B threads on MN Grin[/quote]
Well… no. But that doesn’t mean us slightly older, non ‘real cool kids’ can’t want to look decent.
I’d look fucking horrific in a 90’s slip dress. I looked awesome in one in the 90’s though. And it wouldn’t really be appropriate for me walking 1.5 miles to drop the kids at school then head off for a swim, followed by working from home. Of course 18 year old models wear different clothes to 40 year old mothers of 3 taking their kids to school, no one has claimed otherwise.

magicstars · 31/12/2021 21:00

The coolest mum at my dc's school has multi coloured hair, the brightest leggings & huge colourful, sparkly tops (clashing). Often crazy sunnies & most importantly, she's friendly & confident.

TenLittleDinos · 31/12/2021 21:08

And also, what’s ‘cool’ for an 18 year old model isn’t necessarily ‘cool’ for a 40 year old, and vice versa. That doesn’t mean a school mum can’t be cool, it’s just a different kind of cool as befits their life stage.
If I did dress like someone’s 18 year old model daughter on the school run, I can bet the first descriptor in anyone’s mind wouldn’t be ‘cool’ Grin

littleburn · 31/12/2021 21:15

I usually wear leggings with a turn up, new balance trainers and a mod style khaki parka (with a sweater underneath, but it's winter so no one sees it). It's my wfh/popping into town/school run 'uniform'. It looks smart enough (I think!) without being too try hard or having to think about it each morning.

I don't really get the putting lots of thought into curating an outfit for the school run thing though. Each to their own, but it feels like some competitive 'yummy mummy' media stereotype, where women are all about competing with each other at the school gates. Like a weird extension of trying to be in with the popular girls at school.

Wannalivewithcommonpeople · 31/12/2021 21:19

@Dontgetyerknicksinatwist Which warm headbands? I’m really trying to picture what you mean 🙈

PegasusReturns · 31/12/2021 21:24

@TenLittleDinos you’ve misunderstanding the tone of my posts. I was taking a swipe at the posters who were ridiculing those of us who care what we look like and want to look good (stylish/cool/whatever) and belittling posters for their efforts and pretending “cool” is some unachievable state of being for us mere mortals.

Of course you can dress “cool” whatever your age and you’ll never see me doing anything other than celebrating women that what to enjoy what they wear and how they look.

TenLittleDinos · 31/12/2021 21:29

Apologies if I misinterpreted. I just get the impression from some posts on here that people think that if we’re not skinny, young and rich we may as well give up!
I was pretty fucking cool when I was 18, 7 stone and spent all my money from working in the Diesel shop on a Saturday on clothes Grin. Sadly I’m past that now I have 3 kids, a crippling mortgage and am the wrong side of 40, but I still like to look decent!

Realitysucks · 31/12/2021 21:37

Why ? Interested to know, because I don't care or because im older ? Genuinely interested in whether everyone commenting is under 30?

Apparently according to my 19 year old I was a cool mum, at 24- 35 his friends all thought I was great which for him was great until the age of 11 when he then found it awkward when his mates were telling him his
Mum was fit 😂🤣😂🤣 ( I’m also nothing special so not sure why they would think that) safe to say my youngest wont have the same problem 😂🤣😂

TenLittleDinos · 31/12/2021 21:39

Definitely not under 30!

Gilly12345 · 31/12/2021 21:42

Just wear what you like and wear what suits you.

Why try and look cool?

I live mainly in jeans, ankle boots, padded jackets, mostly Joules.
