Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

I think fringes make a person look younger and bootcut jeans are trendy...

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 01:25

I didn't realise it was going to be one of these threads!

So many lists of must nots.

How about some positive stuff?

Cameleongirl · 03/01/2021 01:31

@Roundlampshade

Bootcuts and flares are coming back into fashion. Shock
@Roundlampshade, my teenager has some zebra print bell bottoms. They look fabulous on her long legs. I don’t know whether to be awed or horrified. 🤣

Don't tell me bootcuts are back in

BinkyBoinky · 03/01/2021 01:47

That thing that some older women do when they cut their hair really short and wear their jackets with the collar up.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 03/01/2021 01:47

@grassisjeweled

Don't tell me bootcuts are back in
They've been for a while. Even I know that and I break ever s&b mumsnet rule.
Bouledeneige · 03/01/2021 01:53

I'm sorry. In 56 and quite dumpy now. I don't seem to tick a lot of the boxes mentioned here. I have good haircuts and glasses and some nice bags, the 'right' trainers and boots. But I also have lots of lovely comfortable stuff that is easy to wear and cosy. But does it really matter?

But I must say reading all the comments here it just sounds nasty and ageist. Younger women slagging off older women.

You might sneer. But we have lots of assets - wisdom, experience, independent minds, kindness and warmth. Many of us are looking after both teens/young adults and elderly parents, holding down careers etc. And thankfully don't think our life depends on mountains of cosmetics, beauty products and disposable in season fashions made in sweat shops all of which are fucking up our planet. And thankfully one of our greatest wisdoms with our lovely friends is that we don't judge a book by it's cover. You too shall learn one day that it's character that counts.

Destinysdaughter · 03/01/2021 02:05

Haha I'm 56 and have loads of these but I really don't care! I'm happy in myself and know what suits me. I feel lucky and grateful to have been given all these years and you know what, I'm going to wear what I jolly well like! Smile

Flambola · 03/01/2021 02:29

I don’t think it’s younger women slagging off older women at all Bouledeneige, but is the irony of your post not lost on you?

GrimDamnFanjo · 03/01/2021 02:37

God some of these prescriptions were depressing.
How about a more positive spin on what you can do?
Eg know your body shape and work out what looks good on you.

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 02:37

I'm kind of with you boul.

As per my previous comment. What makes you look attractive is confidence and attitude.

And yes ageist.

Wear what the fuck you like and be cheerful and you will always look good.

Yes it's a depressing thread.

Shinyflecks · 03/01/2021 02:43

Heinous ‘mum boot’ - sorry in advance

What instantly ages?
billsandmoon · 03/01/2021 02:44

Can anyone give me an example of a non-mum boot and tell me what distinguishes it from a mum boot?!

NiceGerbil · 03/01/2021 02:57

Zomg I love fly boots!

And luckily I'm not insecure so, whatever Grin

These lists depress me.

Wear what you like. Do what you like. People who are confident and happy always look good.

These rules... Are for people who are not, I dunno. Why? Why are you judging women on their clothes and not who they are? What they do?

It's a depressing thread.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 03/01/2021 03:00

It’s not depressing in the least,it’s ok to have strong opinion on stuff other than pomanders

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 03/01/2021 03:24

Beige socks
shoes with velcro!

coronafiona · 03/01/2021 03:38

Brightly coloured glasses
Large necklaces (prue leith style)
Tights and sandals
Tiny handbags on a long thin string
Small cheap cats being driven very slowly
Bad posture

coronafiona · 03/01/2021 03:40

Also those flat ugly shoes with a strap

Cameleongirl · 03/01/2021 03:43

Reading glasses on a chain around your neck. I’ve been thinking about this recently as I can’t really read small print on labels anymore...but I refuse to give in and get a chain for my reading glasses (even though it would be useful). I’d rather squint at things. 🤣

coronafiona · 03/01/2021 03:48

*cars. Not cats. Grin

finkking · 03/01/2021 03:52

Don't tell me bootcuts are back in

Have been for a while. struggling to become mainstream though. One issue is that it's quite hard to be over 30 & wear them without looking like your still stuck in the 90s.

PrincessNutNuts · 03/01/2021 04:03

If not gin then what types of alcohol are youthful please? Asking for a country.

PrincessNutNuts · 03/01/2021 04:17

Lol!

I am quite a utilitarian dresser at the best of times, but particularly this year. I've lived in elasticated waist joggers, and my bags are almost all cross body. I even have a bumbag. I'm resolved never to go for highlights again. I have a parka and a running fleece. And a bloody fringe! Pretty sure my boots have a moulded sole too.

My friend does quite heavily pencilled eyebrows and the dark one tone hair but it works for her..

We've both got about about half a wrinkle between us, someone asked me if I was preggo recently because she said I was glowing, and my friend still suits a tan so I'm calling it a win. Fleece etc notwithstanding.

riotlady · 03/01/2021 05:13

Think it’s interesting that cross body bags have been mentioned so much! I’m 28 and most of my friends use cross bodies or backpacks, I would associate a proper handbag with my mums generation?
