Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

I don't think you need to be a slave to fashion to keep looking 'contemporary', but a nod to current trends helps. Also dressing for your shape helps, and keeping hair in a reasonable condition is beneficial. None of this costs loads though! And I think a big part of this is wearing what you feel good in, and being happy, it shows in your face!

TheChosenTwo · 03/01/2021 00:12

Definitely a Radley/Orla Kiely bag with bootcut jeans and the dreaded mum boots.
Fleeces.
I’m of the opinion though of wear whatever the fuck you want if it makes you happy. We’re all getting older, every day, there’s no shame in looking your age (or older!). Just wear what makes you feel happy and comfortable. And I’m now going to find some pictures of what I would consider ‘mum boots’!

TheChosenTwo · 03/01/2021 00:15

Just the quickest of Googling ‘women’s boots’ threw up plenty of offenders Grin

If an 80 year old wore many of the styles listed here she'd look awesome and if a 20 year old did then she'd probably look pretty good too. They would still both look their age.

The key is not giving a crap and wearing what you like and what you feel comfortable in. It really shouldn't matter to you how old others think you are. People who throw those judgements about tend not to look very good themselves.

I'm not a fan of fleeces, cross body bags or clumpy shoes, but they don't really age people. To me those things can look frumpy or plain but to someone else it might look understated and practical and not too try hard.

houmousexpert · 03/01/2021 00:17

@herethereandeverywhere

Scarves!

patterned scarf over top/sweater/blouse. Age-a-rama.

Totally agree with this 🤣
Plonque · 03/01/2021 00:17

Phew 😅 I don't like any of those. I feel vindicated.

ktp100 · 03/01/2021 00:22

Fuck aaaaaaaallllllllll of this shit!!!

Wear what the fuck you want & bollox to everyone else, I say.

I'd rather be happy with overly dyed hair, baby blue eye shadow and a wonky eyebrows than join the 'proper' brigade.

Growing old disgracefully looks way more fun!

SenorFrog · 03/01/2021 00:23

Some of these replies are quite sneery, there really is nothing wrong with looking a different generation to 20/30 somethings when you're in your 50's etc. You can be stylish at any age without being a slave to current trends, obviously religiously wearing trends from your youth will age you, it doesn't mean you can't wear a style that suits you just because someone 30 wouldn't wear it.

I'm 53, I have long hair, I often wear dm's, I don't wear foundation but I love a crossbody bag. Meh, a mixture of the good and the bad but I don't care either way.

@ktp100 Growing old disgracefully looks way more fun!

That's the course I've chose , lol

Small boobs.

Fleeces are ageing, you can keep warm & active without resorting to a fleece.

Too much botox/filler can make you look older.

Elasticated waist bands

Nah, joggers are in!

Remember earlier this year when Sharon Osbourne ( in her late sixites) ditched the dye and went for her natural grey? Her hair always looks fabulous and healthy, smooth and perfect but she probably has a personal stylist who ensures Mrs. O always looks the bizz. Her new hair look was such a hit with her (apparently) and was admired from far and wide.

Guess what? She has reverted back to the red. Well she DID look older with the grey, no denying that one.

I grow my fringe out from time to time but always end up cutting another one in. I like it so who cares. I also dye my hair but nothing permanent as years of that ruined the condition so only temporary colours now.

finkking · 03/01/2021 00:31

I have long hair so wonder when I need to cut it. Fortunately it's pretty thick so it has blunt ends & looks healthy. I hate long hair that is wispy & thin on the ends, that's ageing.

Wannabewriter · 03/01/2021 00:36

How the fuck can drinking gin age you?!

noirchatsdeux · 03/01/2021 00:41

I've had my hair in a bob, with a fringe, since I was 5 (apart from the 80s where like everyone else I had the terrible perm) so I've always been aged!

Wendyhause · 03/01/2021 00:46

@Wannabewriter

Well obviously not the act itself I would imagine but the long term effects. Gin or any alcohol and heavy usage over many years can age a skin and body terribly. Same with smoking. So it is not just hair and makeup, clothing choices or bloody handbags and perfume. It is not taking care of your health which is the main culprit to premature ageing. Sunbed usage and particularly on the unprotected face are also responsible for many tired and dry old mugs. Not mine I hasten to add!

I have never been a smoker but know two women who look much older than they would if they had not taken up the habit.

Edgeoftheledge · 03/01/2021 00:46

Being underweight
Cold shoulder tops especially if exposing tattoos

Providora · 03/01/2021 00:47

At my age (very late 40s) long term neglect, particularly smoking/alcohol abuse/drugs, really starts to show on faces and people can look a decade younger or older than they are depending on what kind of life they've had. I don't think clothing choices make a whit of difference!

Baronessbrigade · 03/01/2021 00:47

Shoulder length highlighted hair, its aging as it's so lacking in imagination. Also heels and too much make up

mena51 · 03/01/2021 00:57

Wine face

MrDarcysMa · 03/01/2021 00:57

Dresses over leggings
Most flowery prints.
Anything from white stuff
Feathered haircuts

Woodlandbelle · 03/01/2021 00:58

Holy Fucking Moly I must look about 90!

Kljnmw3459 · 03/01/2021 01:01

I look about 20 years older when I put on wrong colour of eyeshadow.

Roundlampshade · 03/01/2021 01:07

Bootcuts and flares are coming back into fashion. Shock
