What instantly ages?

Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

It would indeed, Alexis! I just think that women are under so much pressure, it's a shame such negativity is attached to getting older!

Yes, I feel like women cant really win- if they do nothing to stop the raging process its "OMG she's really let herself go- why doesnt she make an effort?!"
If they try to have treatments to reduce the effects of ageing they get "omg how pathetic does she look- mutton dressed as lamb, her face looks ridiculous" etc etc

You cannot win.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/01/2021 13:47

ageing not raging lol

Maireas · 10/01/2021 14:07

Exactly! Lose/lose Hmm

toetickle · 10/01/2021 14:22

Vertical lines/wrinkles on top lip

SoupnSalads · 10/01/2021 14:42

Honestly its just dressing wrong for your body shape and wearing the wrong colours or tones.

Try the Threads website, you enter all your details and they give you outfit recommendations. Its free.

I do lots of the things here and I have often been told I look put together.

Janegrey333
My niece introduced me to that name apparently that's what she has, oh she is 23.
If you read post just before mine, it was in response to that.

Unforgettablefire · 10/01/2021 15:42

Surely it goes on your actual age? I could wear the same type clothing as my mother and I’d look instantly aged, but my mother in the same clothes looks ok.
Definitely the dark dyed hair though as my mother does do this, it doesn’t suit her at all but she’s happy with it.

Ddot · 10/01/2021 16:38

I love wearing black but it doesn't look great anymore, very sad. I opt for navy now or if I do wear black I put another colour near my face with a scarf or a striped tshirt under it, just poking out

GoLightlyontheEarth · 10/01/2021 17:52

Weight, lined skin, roots. Clothes that don’t fit properly or don’t flatter. PVC trousers, clingy clothes, stripper heels. Fake tan. Hair dyed black. Too much make up.

Russellbrandshair · 10/01/2021 17:59

Also- the two main ones in my experience are: smoking and sun exposure.

People who lay in the sun covered in oil excessively or are heavy smokers always look decades older.

I notice the difference between UK and hot Mediterranean countries. In UK we hardly get sun so our complexions stay relatively unlined (barring sun bed use obv). When I went to Portugal, Italy and Spain I noticed that when young the people there were absolutely stunning but once they hit middle age their skin looked awful- very wrinkled and aged.
In those places in summer it’s strong sun from 7am until about 8pm, you literally can’t escape it and it wreaks havoc on your skin.

Dugee · 10/01/2021 18:21

@Ddot

Same here, I go for grey around my face and black bottoms.

Kintsugi16 · 10/01/2021 18:28

I didn’t wear black for years but now I’m much older it appears to suit me again!

Gwenhwyfar · 10/01/2021 18:29

@Maireas

You can be happy and challenge others' opinions. If you think some people's posts are misogynistic and/or ageist or invalid or stereotyping it's also within your rights to comment. It doesn't make you an angry or unhappy person. Perhaps one that will challenge the continuing social and cultural pressures on women.
But the complainers aren't arguing about certain points. They're disagreeing with the whole thread. They're saying it's ageist and misogynist not want to look older than your age. It's a valid opinion, but why come and ruin someone else's thread. Go and read a thread that interests you.
Maireas · 10/01/2021 18:37

I don't see how anyone is ruining a thread, Gwenhwyfar. It's just opinions.

One person said she'd written a long post and she hoped that would lead to the thread getting full and being closed so yes, she's trying to ruin the thread.
pangolina · 10/01/2021 18:42

In my experience, I can age overnight by not drinking enough water. I look tired and sallow and puffy but wizened. It's not good!
I also inexplicably turn into my mother (34 yrs my senior) if I put on khaki parka, so mine has just gone to the charity shop!

RecipeStealingBitch · 10/01/2021 20:10

For me it’s:

  • blue bootcut jeans
  • short, feathered hair
  • black heeled boots

It’s very strange how pictures of people in the 80s and early 90s made everyone look so much older. The short feathered/permed hair, moustaches on men, boxy clothes and frosted lipsticks were so ageing.

Dugee · 10/01/2021 20:13

@RecipeStealingBitch

All black heeled boots?

HouseofBrieandBanter · 10/01/2021 20:14

Boxy clothes are on trend!

Fitted and “flattering” tops are not

woodhill · 10/01/2021 20:23

I hate boxy tops

RecipeStealingBitch · 10/01/2021 21:26

I mean like 80s/90s boxy stuff with huge shoulder pads, frills etc. Together with the hair, massive Deirdre Rachid glasses etc, I think they do make people look older. There’s a photo of my mum in the early 90s with a perm and massive glasses and she looked much older than she was - today’s glasses styled and hair are generally much more flattering.

I think you're confusing the 80s and 90s with the 70s 😂

Moustaches were not fashionable in the 80s/90s neither were big glasses, if anything people were wearing the small round John Lennon glasses in the 80s

Gwenhwyfar · 10/01/2021 23:26

"Together with the hair, massive Deirdre Rachid glasses etc, I think they do make people look older."

But they didn't at the time.
Moustaches look silly on men now, but didn't in the 70s. We've seen beards come and go with the hipster beard trend. Perms look silly now, but were on trend in the 80s and 90s....

Ddot · 11/01/2021 05:09

Still have the same hair I had in my 20,30,40,50s can't get a good hair cut. I have a very curly mop. I did hate it when I was a teenager but have drown to love it. Stressful going to get it cut, as I'm rarely happy and end up having to sort it out with the scissors back home.
