Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

'Sensible' shoes or boots. Trainers are better if you need comfort (I do!)

Jeans that are ill-fitting or an unfashionable cut eg. bootcut

A waterproof coat worn anywhere except on outdoor sports/activities

I am guilty of all those - but I do wear trainers, and my jeans are bootcut rather than ill-fitting. No-one has ever guessed my age correctly, they all think I'm 10 years younger than I am, and have done since I was around 30 (I'm now 61)

I agree that hair dyed too dark is very aging, and also being very thin does nothing for a woman when she gets to a certain age.

Aquamarine1029 · 02/01/2021 23:35

Matte lipstick, especially dark shades. It just makes your lips look smaller and brings attention to any lines.

Harsh, drawn on eyebrows. Just stop already!

Heavy eye make-up. Dreadful.

Very dark dyed hair. Makes you look like a corpse.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/01/2021 23:36

Fuck , I'd best just go and throw myself onto a spike Grin

I am guilty of so many of these !

SynchroSwimmer · 02/01/2021 23:37

From memory, I think the view on GN is:
Cauliflower hair
Anorak that goes up and down with no waist

TableFlowerss · 02/01/2021 23:37

I think too much make up adds years on. As a pp said, it just sits in your wrinkles and pores. There’s the tendency to try to hide lines etc and pile the foundation on, but it has the opposite affect.

Another one that agrees grey hair is ageing. Good on women that don’t give a shit but I couldn’t yet.

I think at a certain age, long hair looks a bit naff too. I don’t mean shoulder length, I mean properly long.

Craftycorvid · 02/01/2021 23:38

Yes, another plea for pictures of these offending ‘mum boots’ of which you speak.

So, I have a fringe and I like it, thanks. I also have long coloured hair. I’m very partial to a bit of leopard print especially in a coat. I wear brogues when I feel like it. Am I beyond redemption? Grin

Grey hair yes aging but also can look very stylish. I also know very young women who die hair unusual grey pink shades and it looks fabulous and not aging. A mum at school wears her brown unstyled hair streaked with grey, just doesn't care but it makes her look old.

Unstyled hair.

Weight is the worst.

Old fashioned tailoring.

Black bootcut trousers, "sensible" black shoes and colourful floral tops.

Your skin. Dull skin = aging, massive crows feet on really quite young women = aging
Anyone with sun damage, scrawny necks and aged looking hands. But nothing can be done about this.

I disagree with the posts above saying fleece are aging. Leisure gear is worn by all ages. On thin women clearly dressed for fitness (outdoor activities etc) then it's not aging.

FlorencGreenTeal · 02/01/2021 23:41

And hair dyed too dark.???

....hey some of us have accidents, we just have to live with....😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

MushMonster · 02/01/2021 23:41

I think:
Hair, grey or flat looking
Clothes not fitting properly, either too big or without a shape. Made worst if they are boring.
Too much make up.

JaceLancs · 02/01/2021 23:42

Fleeces

Chunky plastic/shell/enamel jewellery on leather cord.
Any necklace long enough to reach past your boobs.

amusedtodeath1 · 02/01/2021 23:50

Well, I guess I'm old then Grin. I'm in the process of growing out my grey hair. I wear skinny jeans (and leggings). I just cut my hair in a Bob (no fringe though). Wear my blooming cosy waterproof Parker everywhere in winter. As I'm at home dog walking is my daily activity so I'm fully kitted out in waterproof pants, walking boots etc. I have two pairs of Teva walking sandals.

Having said all that, I really don't care whether I look old or not, I am old (ish) I have no problem with it (anymore, it took me a while). I think I still look fine, quite frankly I'm not trying to impress anyone and I wear/do what suits me. I'm old and I still rock! Grin

ZenNudist · 02/01/2021 23:50

This thread seems very focused on what looks frumpy rather than what looks aging. I think genetics have a lot to do with it. I commit many of the sins on this thread but since lockdown I've gone more and more for practicality over style. Trying too hard looks ridiculous. I live in Manchester so I need a waterproof coat. I take dc to park all the time. I have lots of nice boots but wear practical walking boots or wellies. Practical functional clothes make sense with young dc.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 02/01/2021 23:51

I think a lot of posters used this thread to sneer about things THEY really don't like or kinda misunderstood the brief and are naming things they're old fashioned/dated.

Take for example Next. A 17/20 yo wearing ANYTHING from Next will suddenly look years older? Really?

Bluntness100 · 02/01/2021 23:52

Sadly weight, too thin or too fat.

Bobs, or princess Diana short cuts,

Badly done blonde highlights or too dark hair,

Clothes from shops like fat face or the ubiquitous Bretton top

Any make up too sparkly

Big hair

Elasticated waist bands

Polyester.patterned blouses.

Overly young clothes, too short, too low,, too tight,

I think as you age, go for elegant, well fitted, understated, with natural looking make up, and good hair, which means if looks natural, shines and healthy and you can’t go wrong..

Gobbeldegook · 02/01/2021 23:55

Foundation
Hmm I’d dispute that, I wear a Charlotte tilbury one, it makes my skin look much fresher, it’s dewy and hides imperfections. I look like me, but more healthy. I kinda loose rhe grey tone,,
