What instantly ages?

Whether that be clothing or cosmetics, I'm interested to hear your opinions. I have a few of my own thoughts on this, though I could be way off the mark.

Am in need of a boost and think I might be unwittingly ageing myself before my time.

Thanks.

I agree @TwirlingTwizzler, i hoicking up my 'matronly bosom' right now, if you've got it, hoick it! Grin

Kintsugi16 · 10/01/2021 11:14

TwirlingTwizzler
I think you’ve countered your own arguments there by saying “as we age”.

I’ve answered the OP’s question with my personal findings as I’ve aged but should have been clearer on the makeup comment. Pearly eyes, lips nails & matte face

I don’t mean constantly smiling. Just try not to look fucked off all the time

Maireas · 10/01/2021 11:17

@Kitsungi16 - Why does it bother you if a stranger (woman?) looks fucked off? Maybe she is.

TwirlingTwizzler · 10/01/2021 11:20

My natural face looks 'fucked off all the time', It's just how my face is.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 10/01/2021 11:23

@NiceGerbil

Matronly bosom?

What are women with big boobs supposed to do to avoid this? Out of interest.

Well women aren't supposed to have their natural hair colour apparently, so maybe you are expected to get rid of your boobs too.
Ddot · 10/01/2021 11:33

I discovered brow shadow, it's marvelous. I like body shop one it doesn't smudge and is easy to apply. I've always had good eye brows but started to grey in my forties. Tried dying but too messy.

Maireas · 10/01/2021 11:36

You are expected to give birth and breast feed and it have no impact on your body. Flat tummy and perky breasts!
Keep smiling!

Floisme · 10/01/2021 11:44

Random men yelling at you to smile is the extreme end of it, but I think the drip drip of daily expectation leaves its mark too. Read any Botox thread - the main reason women usually give for using it is that they dread looking angry. I have yet to meet a man who says he worries about this.

C0NNIE · 10/01/2021 11:44

@Ddot - I dye my eyebrows, it takes 5 mins, cheap as chips and no mess. I just put the paste on with a cotton bud.

It doesn’t bother me personally. Is that what this thread is about? Confused

I do think it’s ageing

Maireas · 10/01/2021 11:50

I don't think it's ageing. Young people look pissed off. Men do.

Kintsugi16 · 10/01/2021 11:50

This all affects men too obviously.

Discoloured teeth
Pot belly
Hairy ears/nose
Poor posture
Grumpy old man syndrome
Comb overs
Leather jackets
Ill fitting jeans
I sometimes think men tread a finer line with clothes than women.

Maireas · 10/01/2021 11:52

Grumpy old man syndrome
Have you met teenagers? How come a grumpy 15 year old isn't mistaken for a 75 year old if being grumpy is ageing?

Kintsugi16 · 10/01/2021 11:53

Oh I agree!

The young can look beautifully pissed off in a mysterious way. It’s the drooping face pissed off I mean Grin

Ddot · 10/01/2021 11:54

Resting bitch face 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Difference is that men don't tend to critique other men, that and they don't care as much and it's not expected that a man should remain looking youthful to climb the career ladder or begin a new relationship.

We all age (if we are lucky). This is the S&B section, so style advice on how to look good is great, and some people have good advice.
However, there is a thread of ageism and misogyny running through this, that older women can be ridiculed for the temerity to age, to make less than fashiona choices, or choose to wear practical or comfy clothing.

Kintsugi16 · 10/01/2021 12:09

The OP asked a question and I answered with my own thoughts, opinions and experiences.

I don’t expect others to agree or like them as I don’t necessarily like them myself.

IrmaFayLear · 10/01/2021 12:45

I think men are more conscious of their appearance these days. Apparently moob operations have been hugely popular during lockdown!

Dh is not happy at all that every hair on his head has transplanted to his ears and nose and, weirdly, to the back of his neck. Actually I feel sorry for men as anti-ageing efforts make them look ridiculous. Look at old rock stars with hair weaves, dyed chest hair, big staring eyes and brilliant white gleaming choppers...

thebabessavedme · 10/01/2021 13:17

I look soooo fucking pissed off and angry most of the time that no random man would fucking DARE to tell me to smile, however, if I do deign to smile at said random man I am so young looking and frankly allurring that they melt at my feet. I think its my perfume 'pure venom', not avaliable at Boots or Robert Dyas.

I know that to be “ bitchy resting face” that is, the expression you have in repose.

Yeah I dont know why people are getting so angry about people answering the question the OP actually asked!

These are just people's opinions, they arent "facts" theyre just based on what others have experienced themselves when faced with someone whose age isnt what they thought it was.

Of course it doesnt really "matter" in the scheme of things, and noone is saying you MUST or you HAVE to change hair colour or whatever. These are simply opinions, and they are like buttholes- everyone has one so dont take this too seriously. I personally like fillers and Ive seen some truly horrible and nasty things said on MN about women who get them but I simply dont care, I like them so I will continue having them. Everyone has an opinion that others wont like, thats life I'm afraid and you cant let it affect you otherwise you'll never be happy, ever.

Maireas · 10/01/2021 13:35

You can be happy and challenge others' opinions. If you think some people's posts are misogynistic and/or ageist or invalid or stereotyping it's also within your rights to comment. It doesn't make you an angry or unhappy person. Perhaps one that will challenge the continuing social and cultural pressures on women.

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 10/01/2021 13:39

@maireas oh I agree.

I just wouldnt take this thread too seriously is all.

The OP did ask and people are just answering. I admit I'm not a fan of grey hair but that doesnt mean I think everyone with grey hair MUST dye it, thats silly. We are all different and it would be very boring if we all looked the same
