TOAST

Now I never thought I'd say this, not until my mid 40's at least, but I feel like celebrating the wonders of TOAST! I'm not sure I'm game for the wintry stuff but their summer dresses are just perfect. For years I've longed for the undone, easy linen look but usually end up looking like a sack of potatoes... not this summer my friends!

My dad earlier said I looked "outrageously well sorted" in my new orange linen number - I think he meant well put together, and I've just got the navy on sale on JL. Yipppeeeee!

That’s good to know @Zinnia Smile

Randomfatty · 03/06/2020 15:01

Arrggh - have bought some bits in the sale - I have to ban myself from the website as there is always something nice on there! I have bought the yellow and blue triangle dress and a white seersucker shirt.
I’m not tall and willowy but love the cut and fabric of some of the clothes - though the sizes are inflated!

Uponmytiptoes · 03/06/2020 15:39

Looks like John Lewis have got some returns. I just managed to get the orange linen dress for £65. Hoping it'll fit, I had to get one size up from my regular size.

Zinnia · 03/06/2020 16:21

Really hope JL aren't discontinuing - everything Toast on their website is on sale, even the stuff that isn't reduced on Toast's own site.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 03/06/2020 16:24

Well noted. I grabbed some bits from JL as well, return policy better than Toast.

Railingsohno · 03/06/2020 16:53

some of my favourite things are Toast (in the sale). After reading this thread i just bought the belt bag and one of the gorgeous Kantha jackets . EEEk!

ilovecherries · 03/06/2020 17:39

@AmethystMoonShine

I’m really happy to have a Toast thread! I wonder if it’ll last a while?

I also have the dress Angela McLean wore. It’s really easy to wear. I always wear it with a few buttons undone but might try it buttoned up to the neck as she did to see if I like it? I got it for about £70 I think, I was gutted when it went down to £40. I have the cream and black version too!

I got mine for £40. I was doing cartwheels :) I usually wear mine open, but actually it’s a very versatile dress. In the winter I wore it with a cropped navy cardi, thick tights and brogues as well, and have also worn it with a jumper.
dustyfloordrobe · 03/06/2020 18:20

Loooooove Toast. Love it. Excellent quality, both in cut and fabric. I don't think I've ever bought full price though!

My two favourite summer dresses are from Toast - heavy cotton-linen, pockets, wash beautifully, perfection. Bought them two years ago, wear them endlessly as soon as the sun comes out, will wear them forever. Also love last season's Fair Isle jumper in blue and green.

goldpendant · 03/06/2020 19:03

Eeeeeee I've just ordered the Ria check and the Kado floral on JL - both on sale! Ria only in a size 8 might be optimistic but worth a try!

Lovely dresses gold. I'm enjoying all the Toast love here while I await my order.

Has anyone tried Olive clothing? Sort of Toast-lite. I like the look of lots on their site, but never seem to get round to ordering. Probably bc offering only one size of everything is ridiculous.

mizu · 03/06/2020 20:36

I have a lovely olive colour jumper from Olive as the shop is near me. Never seen a sale in there though.

XingMing · 03/06/2020 20:55

@Igenixx, I wouldn't spend £130 on an evening dress: I'd buy vintage or charity shop where occasion wear is dead cheap, but for everyday I spend more. Cost per wear: the garment you wear twice weekly for 35 weeks of the year... whether jeans or a cashmere jumper... is better value than something you wear once or twice. If I buy a cashmere jumper for £80 or £90 from M&S or Uniqlo, it will be black, navy or charcoal, and I wear one every single day from October until March, and I have a navy one on this evening.

WinWinnieTheWay · 03/06/2020 20:57

Someone on here once described Toast as being the style of a dystopian Margaret Atwood novel and I do get that. It's very grow your carrots wearing a linen sack.

XingMing · 03/06/2020 20:59

I like Toast, but only regularly wear one pleated linen skirt. It's ecru coloured, but with an olive and orange print and gold lame woven through it so it glitters in the sun. It's year round stuff: I wear it in winter with tan suede boots and in summer with sandals.

ilovecherries · 03/06/2020 21:25

Will be interested to see how you get on with the Ria. I’ve got one packaged up here ready to go back. On me, both the neck and the waist were too high, and it just wasn’t comfortable. The unmatching checks bothered me as well. But it was a beautiful, very soft cotton and had great potential on the right body (not mine!)
Countmeout · 03/06/2020 22:31

@goldpendant I got the Kado, and have kept it. I’d wanted a dress in that style but all the others I tried didn’t work. This ones lovely. I don’t think I’d wear it here without a cardigan (but I’m well old) I had an orange cardigan which goes over it lovely. It’s very neat fitting though but the pockets are great. Will be good if we ever get on holiday again where I don’t care if anyone sees my old bits.
And @WinWinnieTheWay I’m growing my own beetroot this year, does that count as appropriate Toast wearing behaviour

I agree @XingMing re the cost per wear. Also the sheer pleasure some of the clothes have given me in that they feel so nice.

WinWinnieTheWay · 03/06/2020 22:37

@Countmeout it's just how I see it these days. I have an gorgeous real fisherman's jumper that I adore from Toast, but the linen and style reminds me too of a frumpy allotment goer - not that allotments are bad! I see a very specific person. It was the Margaret Atwood comment that jokes Toast for me.

goldpendant · 03/06/2020 22:40

Ooh @ilovecherries what size is yours? I might need to tap you up!

Agree that price per wear has to be taken into account, both the linen dresses have barely been in the wardrobe yet and can be dressed up or down.

BikeRunSki · 03/06/2020 22:44

I love the look and quality of Toast clothing, but it fits me very badly. The tops of all too short and the dress waits are always far too high. I do have a very long torso though, it’s my fault not theirs.

Zinnia · 04/06/2020 00:07

I have the Riya check top (one of my two non-sale purchases!) and absolutely love it. The colours are fabulous.

Currently deliberating between a two more smocks which arrived today.. linen and denim. They make me feel like Barbara Hepworth (NB I do not look like Barbara Hepworth). I do get the Margaret Atwood reference but have always thought of it as more of a Hampstead Modernist vibe in general really. That I find quite appealing.

AmethystMoonShine · 04/06/2020 05:21

I think the versatility of Toast clothing is one of the reasons I love it. @ilovecherries, I can totally see how that dress could be worn year round in the ways you describe.

It’s interesting how different people view Toast in terms of its image; the carrot growing and allotment references made me laugh. I love it for being really quite non fashion. It’s for me, about a style. An enduring style, and that’s what I love coupled with the longevity of Toast pieces. They are, if well cared for, long term wardrobe items if you want them to be (eBaying aside!), the quality is fantastic.

ElizabethMainwaring · 04/06/2020 05:49

Hello all.
I've been dithering about Toast dresses for a while.
What is their sizing like?
I'm an 18 but like things very roomy so usually buy a 20 or 22 in Boden, White Stuff and Marks. Toast only goes up to 18.
What do you think? Thank you!

ElizabethMainwaring · 04/06/2020 05:52

It's the check Ria dress that I really liked but it's sold out in 18 now Envy

AmethystMoonShine · 04/06/2020 06:08

@ElizabethMainwaring keep checking back as things come back into stock as returns are processed.
As for sizing they come up large. In ‘real life’ I’m a large 12. I am a 10 in Toast dresses. I’m heavier on my hips and need a 12 in their trousers. Generally I order a S if not dress sizes items.
