TOAST

Now I never thought I'd say this, not until my mid 40's at least, but I feel like celebrating the wonders of TOAST! I'm not sure I'm game for the wintry stuff but their summer dresses are just perfect. For years I've longed for the undone, easy linen look but usually end up looking like a sack of potatoes... not this summer my friends!

My dad earlier said I looked "outrageously well sorted" in my new orange linen number - I think he meant well put together, and I've just got the navy on sale on JL. Yipppeeeee!

Workwear dress due today 🤞it fits. I took chance on a 10

Countmeout · 22/06/2020 08:45

Well tbh I woke at 3 and looked (obsessed much) others must be as obsessed as it disappears so quickly.
I have just relooked and nabbed the Indigo double faced double breasted jacket in a 12 which was not there when I looked before posting here, will have to see how it fits/looks, my other jackets are a 10 and I’m not convinced I’m a double breasted fan - but too good a price not to try. Maybe with a jumper under in Autumn .

Has anyone got the Laura Derby shoes and can advise on fit?

Saurus72 · 22/06/2020 11:36

So the Anokhi dress I ordered on Saturday arrived - I really like it. It’s still pretty roomy but doesn’t feel ridiculous. And 70% off, v v happy! £175 a lot to pay for a summer dress - £52 much more palatable. And I think here endeth my Summer sale shopping, v pleased with spoils 😊

Looks lovely on you Saurus

Workwear dress going straight back . Huge everywhere except the arms which are too tight ! Also Ollie Gingham shirt .. its ok but not fab .. a bit short and wide .. also a warm fabric.. I wouldn't wear it in winter..

Railingsohno · 22/06/2020 12:25

@Saurus72 that’s really lovely on you. Love it!!!

Railingsohno · 22/06/2020 12:27

@Laksa bad luck. Still at least you’ve saved some money! Grin

Yorkshirelass04 · 22/06/2020 12:31

@saurus that looks stunning and lovely shoes to go with it too.

SirVixofVixHall · 22/06/2020 12:33

Saurus love that, the colour is great on you and your shoes look fab with the dress.

Saurus72 · 22/06/2020 12:52

Ah thanks very much for your kind comments. The fabric is brilliant and pretty 70s so I thought the wedges would be good.

Laska - rubbish when things don’t work out. Frustrating about Toast fit/sizing being so weird sometimes. But I think they’ll be another markdown in the Toast website so you never know what beauty might be waiting for you Wink

Alsohuman · 22/06/2020 12:53

So this arrived this morning and I love it. I paid £70 for it from Toast and it’s now back up to full price again. I can’t believe how lucky I was.

Countmeout · 22/06/2020 13:02

Great dress @Saurus72 and such great value.
That’s marvellous @Alsohuman. Well caught.
Did anyone on here buy the padded long twill coat that appeared briefly at £89.

Alsohuman · 22/06/2020 13:21

I know @Countmeout. This kind of luck doesn’t usually happen to me so I’m absolutely delighted. Great dress @Saurus72, you look lovely in it.

I do wonder if the reaction to their sales gives Toast pause for thought about their pricing generally. I’ve only ever paid full price for one thing and that was at a time when I had more money than sense.

Boiledeggandtoast · 22/06/2020 13:22

Alsohuman I'm so glad you love it! I wore mine at the weekend.

Saurus72 · 22/06/2020 13:29

@Alsohuman I think that’s a good point re: pricing. I’ve been reading a lot/listening to podcasts about retail generally, and fashion retail specifically during the lockdown. One of the recurring points made is that consumers now ‘expect’ a discount. Well, I think that may be a self-fulfilling prophecy - brands find selling clothes harder and harder so they discount, which means their ‘normal’ prices become higher to allow them to offer a discount. Dresses from Whistles for example are now routinely £150-£180, for polyester or viscose. So no wonder people want to not pay full price. I am consciously buying far fewer items than I used to which means I can sometimes (rarely tbh) pay full price in shops like Toast. But this depends on lower turnover of items - a slower fashion industry in effect. A lot would need to change to make this standard across the board. I hope it dies but not convinced it will.

Alsohuman · 22/06/2020 13:34

It’ll go with everything I own - my wardrobe’s very blue. I’ve just worked out that this summer’s Toast buys have cost me £189, they were £465 at full price. Now that’s a result.

Saurus72 · 22/06/2020 13:35

Does not dies 🙄

Floisme · 22/06/2020 13:55

I think you could argue that Toast already do slow fashion - or at least slow Toast-fashion. They repeat a lot of their styles - or only make minor tweaks - across the seasons. I hardly ever get mid-season discount emails from them like I do from the likes of Whistles and Boden, so it seems to me that their prices, outside the sales, are high but fairly stable. Or is it that I don't buy enough to get sent them?
Much as I would love to be able to afford to buy Toast more often, I think the problem with lowering their prices permanently is that you can bet your home that they would lower their quality too, and then, for me at any rate, the whole point of them would be lost. On balance I'd rather wait and take my chances in the sales, or buy second hand.

Alsohuman · 22/06/2020 14:04

That’s a very good point about quality. I’m completely with you there. I do wish there weren’t things that never go in the sales though. I’ve wanted these for years, they’ve never been reduced and I just can’t bring myself to pay over £200 for a pair of sandals.

HieronymusBoschLAPD · 22/06/2020 14:12

@Saurus72 That dress looks lovely. I'm sorely tempted... what's the length like? I'm 5'9" and a bit, so toast dresses can often be a bit short.

The price/sale thing is interesting. I don't think I'd want them to lower their prices (too much) because I suspect, like @Floisme says, the quality would have to be reduced too. If their prices just now are what they need to be to allow for the business model as it stands to be viable, reducing prices must affect that. They must sell sufficient during non sale times to stay afloat? I've bought a few things at full price (more than I'd care to admit, even to myself! Blush), but I comfort myself in the knowledge that their things are of such quality they last, they're also fairly 'timeless' in a way - none of it is high fashion so I won't pull out a summer dress from four years ago and look massively out of date. If however, they could reduce their prices and maintain everything else then obviously I'd be all for a price reduction!

Saurus72 · 22/06/2020 14:16

@HieronymusBoschLAPD - dress length. Well I’m 5ft5 and it’s a few inches below my knees. If you buy it, I’d say probably better to size down from your usual Toast size as it’s v big.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 22/06/2020 14:24

@Saurus72 the dress looks much better on you than me! Love the shoes too

Saurus72 · 22/06/2020 14:29

Yes, interesting point re:quality. Agree I’d rather buy at full price rarely and then in sales, than buy lower quality clothes more frequently at lower costs. Toast quality is head and shoulders above most other brands, it really stands out and I guess if you know that’s important to you and you value it then you’ll find a way of acquiring pieces. Really hope John Lewis is not going to stop stocking it though.

Boiledeggandtoast · 22/06/2020 16:08

I was seduced by all the loveliness on this thread into buying this Toast shirt on Friday evening after a glass of wine.

www.toa.st/uk/product/womens+sale+tops+and+tees/c7nbf/maija+painted+spot+silk+pj+shirt.htm?clr=C7NBF_Violet_sw

I'm so glad I did - it arrived this afternoon and is absolutely beautiful and fits perfectly. I'm not sure I would have been swayed without all your lovely things upthread, so thank you!

Saurus72 · 22/06/2020 16:10

It’s beautiful and I bet you’ll enjoy wearing it all the more because of the huge saving!

Alsohuman · 22/06/2020 16:13

That’s gorgeous, I bet it feels amazing.
