🐌 Fantastic Skincare: We're So Drunk We're Seeing Elephants 🐘

Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

WRT to The Ordinary/Deciem:

Most of us had long since stopped using it, partially due to the inconsistency of formulations and the worrying behaviour of the CEO on Social Media.

For more info on the latter, overview here

A good overview of alternatives is here

Since that compilation, other brands like the Inkey, Revolution Skincare, QRXLabs, and Alex Steinherr x Primark have launched with similar products/concepts.

From the limited experience on here, the Vitamin C 23% and Azelaic Acid from Garden of Wisdom (at Victoria’s Health) is well liked and much preferred over TO versions.

OCTOBER 2018: In other news, we’re two years old this month! We’re so old- Drunk Elephant is finally available in the UK, but all this celebration is probably overshadowed by the fear that our beloved LRP Toleriane Fluide may have been discontinued Sad

Thank you for the new thread Bo - nice to see our snail 🐌 being joined by an elephant 🐘

Drunk elephant is a bit too pricey for me at the moment (even with discounts) but who knows, if I get drunk enough I might give in to temptation Grin

Mint how are you getting on with the DHC mascara (dare I ask??? Grin) if you don’t like it you should be able to return with amazon prime.

I was very tempted to slip in a bit of the sperm whale in there Sallie, but you know, sex topic 😱 Grin

🐋 🐋 🐋

All the Deciem drama aside, I do have to say I'm mildly paranoid about some internal communications between BT and the co-CEO Nicola completely in emojis which contained lots of snail emojis...

OP posts:
SallieSallow · 11/10/2018 21:33

I did think there might have some reference to spurting spouts Bo Grin GrinGrin

I wonder if BT and Nicola were on to us - maybe she lurks in the thread or even posts Shock if she starts with the 🐘 and the 🐋 we’ll know for sure....

Apparently Estée Lauder are going to court to make Nicola sole CEO of Deciem, obviously protecting their investment. Shame they didn’t intervene sooner and get BT some help before it came to this.

botemp · 11/10/2018 22:32

Yeah it's all a bit odd business wise. It's also rather disturbing that he seems to be unraveling in Amsterdam, currently obsessing over apple juice.

It's one of those cases where you do wonder how well those around them are acting in the best of interest of someone's health. Not that it's all that easy to get someone help when they don't want to be helped.

In one email/Instagram post he asks Nicola why she lied about their Amsterdam mushroom adventure (or something like that, it was even weirder termed) which sounds really harmful if that was the case. His MH issues aren't new, the worst thing you can do is expirement with hallucinogenics.

Though I suspect that didn't happen as magic mushrooms were banned here quite a few years ago after a French tourist committed suicide under the influence of some, they're no longer easy to get hold of.

I suspect EL will be successful with their power move but do wonder if it will save the company in the long term. Just how much are people willing to endure drama wise when there's so much direct competition now?

Woah, don't know much about skincare but that Deciem stuff is crazy!

EnidButton · 12/10/2018 00:18

Hello 👋🏻

Sallie the blue and white samey packaging confuses me too. Especially as Bioderma and Avene are the almost same. The ultra isn't the same one, the new one has sensitive written on it fairly big (for them anyway) and says something about pre-biotics. I've ordered two of the old one from amazon and the new sensitive one. Will try it and let eveyone know what it's like in comparison.

I really wish companies could put a little warning out when they discontinue something. Urban Decay did it for their original Named palette. It's win win surely. They'll clear their old stock faster and none goes to waste as the die hard fans of it will stock up. Always annoys me, though usually it's hair products or make up.

EnidButton · 12/10/2018 00:21

Thank you for the new thread Bo Flowers

cad186 · 12/10/2018 06:39

Enid if you could let us know what the new version of toleriane fluide is like that would be great thanks. A couple of weeks ago I bought 3 luckily so I have got a while before I need to look for something new!

ElspethFlashman · 12/10/2018 09:05

God my skin has been dry lately. I have this Laura q10 night cream which has always been a winner for me, but it actually feels stiff and tight now. I need something quenchier!

(Is that a word?!?)

Any recommendations for something cheap and cheerful that's all whipped and lush and sinks in like a dream? I used to love the Clinique Moisture Surge and that Clarins Hydra quench one but I don't want to spend that kind of money.

mintmagnummm · 12/10/2018 09:26

Sallie I was going to message you today to tell you.......I like the mascara 👍🏻. Thank u! X

Pupsiecola · 12/10/2018 09:37

Thanks for the birthday wishes.

I bought Essie's (non twist top) ballet slippers on Monday. Just what I wanted. Nice wide brush too (I have big nails so this is important). I looked at their other colours online and it turns out it's their most popular by far.

TS, I have dedicated myself to strength training again. I just couldn't seem to get back into the crazy 6.45am Monday to Friday class (time of year?). I suspect I was almost over training. I was exhausted at the end of the course, and it left little time for running or proper weights. And actually I felt super bloated whilst doing it. After I stopped I dropped 7lbs in 2 weeks. Weird? Anyway, I found a fantastic weight training app called Simple Workout Log for recording all weight training activity and plotting progress over time etc.

I've been doing the whole 16:8 intermittent fasting too and I feel amazing on it. I've always had to force myself to eat breakfast so it suits me brilliantly. I've been eating between noon and 8pm only.

botemp · 12/10/2018 11:07

The whole Deciem drama is even more bizarre than I previously thought. Apparently BT has been sucked in by Qanon, which explains a lot of his ramblings. I initially thought it was just speculation on Reddit but there's a news story on Refinery29 on it now:

www.refinery29.com/en-us/2018/10/213594/deciem-the-ordinary-conspiracy-theory-trump

Now the fellow conspiracy theorist obsessives are egging him on like some martyr on Instagram. It's all highly disturbing.

Elspeth, I'm not sure if it's a available but the Neutrogena hydraboost gel creme for extra dry skin is supposed to be really good. The normal hydraboost aren't as great and contain fragrance. The Bioderma Hydrabio cream is also meant to be a nice plush cream but it's also fragranced.

Oooh yes I've seen the Neutrogena, good call. I bought the serum last week on offer and it's good. I wonder if the offer is still on? (small hope)

In other news the L'Oréal Infallible make up setting spray is fab. I tried it today, have been wearing surgical masks all morning, and my make up is barely touched. Normally it would all be rubbed off, even Double Wear. V impressed.

EnidButton · 12/10/2018 15:47

Hydration? Elspeth? Although I like quenchier. Grin

Cad You lucky beast! I wish I'd stocked up. I usually do so don't know what happened this time.

Well three bottles of the lrp sensitive tol have turned up today. Despite me only ordering 1 to try. So feck knows what that's about. I didn't order them because I haven't tried it yet. Not even sure where they've come from. Confused I'll have to send them back once I work it out.

The Deciem thing is a complete car crash. Where are the people who care about him? He needs help.

EnidButton · 12/10/2018 15:52

I knew someone who went off like that. Not well but enough to see their social media messages. They were diagnosed with schizophrenia eventually but wouldn't take the medication. They were paranoid (possibly not the right word) about very similar things as he's mentioning.

Not that I'm saying he has that obviously. Just that I do think he's unwell.

botemp · 12/10/2018 16:01

Armchair diagnosis but it appears very much like bipolar and this appears to be one very long manic episode building to a very high high which means he's heading for a very low low of extreme depression.

I'm not sure who is direct family are and if there even are any. He also hops from one country to the next making it quite difficult to intervene. I think that's the most worrying thing, the business interests are being taken care of but I'm not sure they're taking as much interest and care in his personal wellbeing. Seeing that this has been an ongoing thing for quite some time now and considering the behaviour shown, he'll have eroded empathy and sympathy from those closest to him.

JDSTER · 13/10/2018 11:50

I’m just catching up. Thanks for new thread Bo.

Enid I agree, I wish companies would tell you when they’re going to discontinue a product. I herd it mentioned a while ago about it being discontinued but it was still available on-line so I didn’t think any more about it. I’ve got two unopened bottles and one in use. I only use a tiny bit in the morning so it should last me a while yet. I’ll also be interested to see what you make of the new one. Does it have niacinamide in it?
I’ve ordered some rapid lash and Vichy clay mask samples based on your recommendation Smile.

botemp · 13/10/2018 12:14

Koko, it is somewhat 'normal' that your skin is all over the place when you're addressing skin barrier issues as it needs to find its own rhythm again. However, it does sound a bit that the moisturiser may be a touch heavy, so either use less or skip in the AM and just rely on sunscreen as moisturiser then. Many on here with combo-oily skin tend not to use, or use very little, moisturiser in the AM.

I was in Primark the other day hoping to check out the oil cleanser from the Alex Steinherr colab. Unfortunately, they didn't have that in and what was there was all very silicones heavy and low on actives (well beyond the preservatives) but the SA cleanser did look good for comb/oily skin. Also the charcoal mask which is foamy Shock had an interesting INCI. Have attached the ingredients of both. Both were €6 IIRC, think they're £5 in the UK.

And in Deciem news, as expected, Nicola is now interim CEO.
