Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

WRT to The Ordinary/Deciem:

Most of us had long since stopped using it, partially due to the inconsistency of formulations and the worrying behaviour of the CEO on Social Media.

For more info on the latter, overview here

A good overview of alternatives is here

Since that compilation, other brands like the Inkey, Revolution Skincare, QRXLabs, and Alex Steinherr x Primark have launched with similar products/concepts.

From the limited experience on here, the Vitamin C 23% and Azelaic Acid from Garden of Wisdom (at Victoria’s Health) is well liked and much preferred over TO versions.

OCTOBER 2018: In other news, we’re two years old this month! We’re so old- Drunk Elephant is finally available in the UK, but all this celebration is probably overshadowed by the fear that our beloved LRP Toleriane Fluide may have been discontinued Sad

Elspeth I bought the Neutrogena hydra boost gel creme ages ago when it first came out, it was ok to start off with then I started to get small red pimples on my cheeks.

Olli if you're around I bought some brilliant lipstick that doesnt budge. It's L'Oreal's infallible which comes with 2 ends, one with the intense colour lipstick and the other side is a lovely balm you put over the top. I bought colour 213 and it last for ages. I did try the Kat Von D everlasting lipstick but there wasnt a single colour that suited me but it does last for ages, so really good if they have a colour that suits.

The Deciem drama is amusing.

I bought Pixi's Retinol tonic in the large size because it's on special offer at Boots, I like it so far.

Love the Elephant Bo which is my favourite animal so gives me joy to see it in the title.

Enid the photos you asked for Smile at least I hope they are.

I can't remember what else I was going to add

Oh yes someone asked about Dermablend. I have it and I actually used it today instead of Nars TM and my skin looked perfectly smooth and perfect. But after 8 hours at work today it was starting to settle in my pores a bit which my Nars doesn't do.

However it still looked really good so I will start using it again I think now that winter is coming.

TantricTwist · 13/10/2018 20:24

I think they've brough out a new shade since I bought my Dermabland. I have 2 shades, Opal and Nude, which I mix to the desired shade.

EnidButton · 14/10/2018 00:35

Does it have niacinamide in it?

Yes it does JD. It's that and another ingredient I can't remember right now that I'm cautious about but it says on the box that it can be used on babies (!) so it must be mild. Hope you like the mask and the serum. The serum takes a while to get going so bear that in mind.

Thank you Tant. It is a totally different product then. Hopefully I'll like this new one and then all the tol fluide lovers will have somewhere to start looking when the back ups run out.

Has anyone sent me something via an online company? Just asking on the random off chance whilst I try and work out where it's come from.

botemp · 14/10/2018 10:22

Koko, I'm trying to remember, is the Rosacea diagnosed and the treatment a prescription? Did you also get a thermal water spray?

Enid, I haven't sent you anything. Are you sure you didn't accidentally opt into an auto renewal subscription thing?

EnidButton · 14/10/2018 10:29

Bo No because it's new products and it would show up on my 'previous orders' list, plus I didn't get any despatch/confirmation type emails from them. It did occur to me though. I was hoping my memory was improving so it's a bit worrying. I'll just send them back.

botemp · 14/10/2018 10:50

Is it the Toleriane fluid? I had some of the old version in my Amazon basket for forever (don't really know why) and noticed it's now listed as the sensitive version so they've just swapped it round despite not being the same product. No notice in the things in your basket have changed basket either.

Enid I am using my Origins Ginzeng Gel Moisturiser a lot and will happily swap over to using that once my 3 bottles of Toleraine run out if LRP don't produce a decent alternative.

I have to say the Pixi Retinol Tonic does have a strong kick to it and I'm finding it a great alternative to PC BHA 2% which is sometimes a bit too strong to use now I'm on Differin, although I will still use PC at least once a week.

Bugger I was near a Primark yesterday and had planned to go in and mooch around the skincare / make up and then I was so bogged down with bags and exhausted I just jumped on a bus and went home.

TantricTwist · 14/10/2018 11:14

BTW M&S have some fantastic knitwear in stock IMHO at really good prices.

ElspethFlashman · 14/10/2018 12:15

Tantric that was me, I used it first time and it was perfectly perfect at first but like that I wasnt as impressed with how it wore. It started to look a bit greasy and pore-tastic. And rubbed off like mad when I put on a mask. I really expected more. I had the shade Vanilla.

But with a setting spray it stayed perfect. I just think you shouldn't need a setting spray!

bo it's the new one. That I ordered from feel unique. Two bottles of it which I wouldn't do as I haven't tried it before and it's from Look Fantastic who list any orders on your account, it's not there, and they send confirmation emails whether you're logged in or not, which they haven't. It's not showing up in my bank info either.

EnidButton · 14/10/2018 14:30

Tant I'll have a look at that one now thank you.

M&S do have some very good jumpers in this year. I've never bought from them before but I think they've upped their game this season.

EnidButton · 14/10/2018 14:32

That's annoying btw bo. It's definitely different.

TantricTwist · 14/10/2018 14:43

Elspeth I think you do long shifts in the same kind of environment as me so it could just be that we are on out feet for 12 hours pretty much and it just sweats off, although yes it does get a bit greasy after a while and the colour transfers. I'll look into the L'Oreal infallible setting spray, only I'm a bit worried it may block pores and cause spots. I'm so impressed with their infallible lipstick staying power that I will study that range further I will prob try their foundation next.

TantricTwist · 14/10/2018 14:53

Actually I've tried L'Oreal infallible 24hr matte liquid foundation and I didnt like it for some reason.

ElspethFlashman · 14/10/2018 16:16

M&S have a 20% off code until tomorrow. Or maybe midnight. YESPLEASE. I've bought my kids Halloween costumes and everything using it.

JDSTER · 14/10/2018 16:36

tant just popping on to say I’ve got a 20% code for M&S once only use but I see elspeth has put a generic code up. I’ve got a sample of origins gel ginzeng, that cane in M&S beauty box, that I haven’t tried yet

koko the thermal spray is really in case the water where you live is particularly drying for your skin. The thermal water is a bit ‘purer’ I suppose. Not essential though. You should blot afterwards. I prefer a clean, dry muslin but some use a tissue.

bo do you think there’s any problem using the new toleriane fluide with niacinamide after using Vit C? I naturally avoid mixing the two.

botemp · 14/10/2018 16:47

Koko, the thermal water is used as described by JDSTER above but I also recommend misting lightly before applying HA serums and moisturiser for very dry skin/skin that struggles to absorb product, where it just ends up sitting on the skin and can cause reactions. But hearing that your spots are subsiding I'd just monitor that it really was temporary.

Are you still seeing your GP for the Rosacea? It's probably worth asking after Soolantra.

What are your next intended steps? Finding a more pleasant to use SPF I assume? After that it may be worth looking into Azelaic Acid as that tackles rosacea and spots.

JDSTER, the Vit C and Niacinamide myth had been debunked, as in that it produces niacin, but some can experience flushing. I'd leave a minute or so in between and it shouldn't be an issue and it's only ever been the ordinary that warned against it with their product, i suspect due to it being in a suspension so there was a delayed absorption.

It is odd, Enid, best just write it off as drunk elephants putting in orders on your behalf.

Maybe I've started sleep shopping. Blush

Not a skin issue but my nails keep splitting horizontally. I've had to file them right down. They're normally very short anyway and using same stuff so not sure what's up. Hopefully they'll look ok with a dark polish on.

You can be prescribed soolantra online Koko perfectly legal and above board. You have to answer questions that a pharmacist then looks at and some places want a pic of the problem sent to them. Obviously much much better to get it from someone (gp or prescribing pharmacist) in person. There's no problem with asking for a certain thing. Just shower was you're informed I think. If they're an arse about it then go to someone else. (Not a fan of my gp Grin)

*shows you're

Lisa Eldridge has a facial massage and exercises video on her YouTube channel and she just did a review of one of those electric current (??) facial machine thingys.

Sorry, brain fog kicked in half way through that I can't remember what you call them at all! It's her latest video with the electric thingy anyway.
