Beauty advent calendars....

Piccolino2 · 17/08/2018 09:30

For those interested there's already some info coming out on this years beauty advent calendars... plenty of time for us all to debate and neurose about it all:

www.reallyree.com/?s=Advent%202018

I've been putting £5 away a week since last Christmas for this so I can purchase guilt free and as I organise the whole of Christmas for everyone then I think I should get a treat to look forward to. Personally I think I like the look of Harrods this time.

What do you all think?

Does anyone remember how quickly the Look Fantastic one sold out? I am very keen but don’t know whether to risk missing out so instead buy the Selfridges one now

Twotabbycats · 03/09/2018 00:05

@Bumbl the Look fantastic one was around for a while last year. They screwed up my order though - I ordered the calendar on pre-order and one other item. The other item came but when it was time to send out the advent calendar it got stuck in their warehouse somehow. I had five frustrating conversations with them on chat and nothing... then in desperation, thinking they would sell out, I cancelled the order and re-ordered. Of course cancelling magically freed up the cancelled order to be sent. So I got two, and I paid for them both Angry It was December by the time I got them, so obviously still in stock at that point. I didn't return the spare as I'm not in the U.K. and I would have had to pay... will maybe eBay it this year. Anyway just a cautionary tale for anyone thinking of ordering it this year... if you're preordering the calendar, don't order anything else at the same time, the computer clearly can't cope!

I noticed there is a Jo Loves one this year - I love her stuff so I'm aspiring to that one and the Liberty one. Trouble is I will end up going for M&S as well as it's such good value! Haven't used up all my stuff from previous years yet - must try harder!

LilaGrace · 03/09/2018 09:02

Does anyone know the release dates for the Jo Malone one and the Diptyque one? Whenever I try to check the Jo Malone website, it just directs me to the general page with no info about the calendar....

LilaGrace · 03/09/2018 13:51

Fstar- thanks so much- that's amazing! It seems like all the info is on blogs at the moment, rather than the company websites. I'm so grateful- much appreciated!
At the moment the Diptyque one is looking like the front runner- as it has more candles than the Jo Malone one. However if anyone has any insight into pros and cons of either, I'd love to hear them.

Fstar · 03/09/2018 14:45

No problem, not sure if you have tried the Molton Brown candles? They are gorgeous

LilaGrace · 03/09/2018 14:47

No- haven't tried the Molton brown ones. Didn't know they did candles- but will try and have a look at them next time I'm in town. Thanks again 😊

SmilingButClueless · 03/09/2018 15:01

I had the Diptyque one last year and thought it was amazing and a really good way to try out the different candle scents.

However, I won’t go for it again this year as it seems to be very similar content to last year and a few of the candles I didn’t really like. Not sure what else to go for that’s similar - not generally keen on Jo Malone.

GobKnobbler · 03/09/2018 16:21

I'd like one that is mostly makeup, rather than skin care, to get me out of my comfort zone with colours. Does such a thing exist?

LilaGrace · 04/09/2018 06:53

Smiling- out of interest, which items in the Diptyque calendar did you not like? And how long would you say you were using up all the things after Christmas? I'm hoping they'll last me a while.

SmilingButClueless · 04/09/2018 09:15

It was the fragrances of some of the candles - the vanilla and oud ones I ended up giving away and four or five of the others I just found a bit bland.

I’m still using some of the products now - the perfume sprays seem to last ages and still have 2 candles left - although I did use candles less than normal this year, so normal usage for me would perhaps have lasted 2-3 months.

SeaGlassHunter · 06/09/2018 06:44

Just had an email about the No7 one, have signed up to the waiting list.

I usually have M&S but I'm tempted by something different this year.

MsRinky · 06/09/2018 10:25

I've just done what I did last year - ordered today's Liberty 25 item allegedly £350 value gift with purchase, which I shall use to refill the box from my 2016 calendar. Costs the same as buying a new advent calendar, but you get the £150 of stuff you chose and ordered in addition to all the goodies.

Belindabelle · 06/09/2018 10:32

Snap MsRinky.

What did you buy? I bought an Hourglass powder and some Santal 33 perfume.

MsRinky · 06/09/2018 11:03

Ha, I finally bought the Hourglass I've been resisting for ages - powder, primer and a brush, plus an eyeliner and a lippie. The new polished me starts as soon as they deliver...

EvilRingahBitch · 06/09/2018 11:25

I’ve been looking at John Lewis but put off by the price which does seem a bit extravagant. Might look at Selfridges, or failing that just stick to M&S again. I enjoyed the summer one this year.

If you’re living in the U.K. Djangor then you really shouldn’t be wasting your precious time checking brands for plastic microbeads: they’re illegal for manufacture or sale in this country.

AliceRR · 06/09/2018 11:30

I’m interested in these but don’t want one that’s full of the kind of samples you get in glossybox / Birchbox subscriptions as I’ve done those and lots of it goes in a box under my bed!!

EvilRingahBitch · 06/09/2018 11:44

The Harrods one does look to be full of really useable stuff albeit at an eye watering price.

Selfridges looks more makeup orientated gobknobbler: alternatively Urban Decay do free makeovers at their counters which are less conservative with colours than some other places so that might help your problem.

cardoon · 06/09/2018 11:51

Could you explain the liberty 25 thing MsRinky?

cardoon · 06/09/2018 11:53

Sorryyyyy, have just scrolled down on the Liberty site Blush

BackinTimeforTea · 06/09/2018 12:02

i had lookfantastic but like jesuisprest a lot of the glittery make up etc i'm getting slightly over the hill for - if you have a niece or are in your 20s etc it'd be a lovely present.

i had m&s before and in fact that was lovely and now I have to remake it with bits for DD each year.

BackinTimeforTea · 06/09/2018 12:04

do think on balance the M&S one is very good value for money, probably the best. I also baulked at the price of the JL one.

MotherofTerriers · 06/09/2018 13:49

I just did the Liberty 25 item thingy, thanks very much for the heads up on that
Unfortunately I had to buy a really big diptyque candle to qualify for it

Caggie09 · 06/09/2018 14:11

I was going to go for the Diptyque calendar, but since seeing Jo loves will be doing one this year i think ill get that. The only thing is the perfume bottles you get are the 2ml samples, but im dying to try the candles amd perfumes out as i love Jo Malone stuff too!
Signed upto the Look Fantastic waiting list, will get m&s this year if it goes down to the £35 at the start of Dec (did that last year) so dont need to spend 70 quid! Had Liberty last year, loved it, but feel its just the same brands different products, will go for Harrods if ive accumulated enough cash before its realised, or go for John Lewis if not. Also would quite like to try the White Company for £150. Not sure where im pulling out all this money from, but i can tryGrin

cardoon · 06/09/2018 14:13

Yes, thank you MsRinky - I got Malle Carnal Flower which I've been wanting for ages Flowers
