Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

Thanks JDSTER good idea.

mintmagnummm · 08/07/2018 13:43

I can't decide between the heliocare 360 oil free gel or the 360 mineral. The gel sounds better for my skin type and doesn't seem to have the chemical ingredients that irritate me like octocrylene and avobenzone etc. Hmm 🤔

EnidButton · 08/07/2018 15:20

Thanks Olli Smile I was looking at the Elsie dresses the other day so that's why I recognised it. They're gorgeous. Great shape.

I'll have a look at that one too Tant Thank you.

Ollivander84 · 08/07/2018 15:25

Enid - they're SO flattering. I sized down and it fits well

JDSTER · 08/07/2018 16:57

Enid olli I ordered a couple of dresses from lady V London, after hearing about it on mumsnet. They came up quite big and I didn’t think they suited me really, so they got sent back. One of those styles that I think looks great on others but not as good in real life on me unfortunately.

MrsDOnofrio · 08/07/2018 20:32

Sorry mint I’d forgotten you aren’t good with fragrance! But it is the only one I’ve used that doesn’t make my eyes react. I can recommend the gel (never tried the mineral one) but my skin is nowhere near as reactive as yours.

EnidButton · 08/07/2018 21:25

I swear I replied earlier! Hmm weird.

Olli JD The Elsie dress looks like a good shape for me. Also glad they come up a bit big as the one I like isn't available in my size. Going to order a couple.

JDSTER · 08/07/2018 21:32

Hope you like them Enid. Maybe you could post a picture? Wink

Ollivander84 · 08/07/2018 21:53

Elsie dress on me

Really really like that Olli. Looks great on you!

Ha! No pic JD but don't worry I'll probably post three posts in a row about it. Grin

ChesterBelloc · 09/07/2018 08:14

mint have you checked out an SPF brand called Altruist? Developed by a U.K. dermatologist, free from fragrance/parabens/potential allergens (but does contain alcohol), deliberately frill/advertising free and therefore low-cost. SPF 30/50 cream and spray, with v High UVA rating. Available on Amazon with hundreds of great reviews, but check out their own website first.

They do a litre bottle of their SPF30 cream, which I'm hoping will be ideal for everyday use for my big family!

MrsDOnofrio · 09/07/2018 08:56

I’ve heard good things about altruist. Might check out the litre bottle for using on the body. Always used Soltan but find it smells really sunscreeny (if you know what I mean)

mintmagnummm · 09/07/2018 09:03

Chester altruist contains avobenzone (it uses the chemical name for it on the packaging)

ChesterBelloc · 09/07/2018 10:58

Is it possible that it's a combination of certain ingredients that your skin can't tolerate, rather than individual ones..?

I only ask because there are good reviews from people who have eczema/sensitive skin/sensitive eyes, so it might still be worth a trial.

Tsmummy08 · 09/07/2018 12:45

Hi all, it's my birthday and DH has kindly given me a SpaceNK gift card - which would have been perfect a couple of years ago but I'm spending so much less on skincare/makeup these days and rarely buy anything from there as it tends to be stuff from Amazon etc.

Does anyone have any ideas/favourites, maybe something a bit indulgent? I'm pretty happy with my existing skincare/SPFs/makeup/perfume at the moment - not sure I've ever said that before!!

mintmagnummm · 09/07/2018 13:02

Chester I'm not sure tbh but I know avobenzone is definitely a no no for me, even if I didn't react to it no way would I choose a product containing this.

Oooh tsmummy do share what your happy with :-)

TantricTwist · 09/07/2018 13:21

Tsmummy I would probably get the Creme de la Mer moisturising cream if it were me.

Tsmummy08 · 09/07/2018 13:49

Tant is that the original La Mer? I used that some years ago when I had more disposable income, nice, but not sure it was worth it...

Mint Probably a load of things that would make your face go "aaaaaaaargh" and fall off Grin Basic AF cleansers (LRP and DHC oil), vit C, HA, and Ceramidin cream or liquid, then Frezyderm and retin-A or BR P50 acid (at night).. And Verso retinol eye cream when I remember...

I think what's really made a difference is that I didn't drink alcohol for 2 months - I'm sure it's made my skin a little more glowy... I've had some over the last week and will probably have some bubbles tonight, but then will have another break until late August. Didn't miss it as much as I thought I would!

SophieLion · 09/07/2018 14:41

Happy birthday Tsmummy! Wishing you every happiness and fantastic skin (of course!) 🎂🍾🎁🎉🎈

mintmagnummm · 09/07/2018 14:45

Tsmummy I'm so sorry I completely missed it was your birthday and got over excited to hear about your products 😂. HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎂

EnidButton · 09/07/2018 15:44

Happy birthday TS! 💗🌈👑

Pupsiecola · 09/07/2018 16:12

TS Happy Birthday To You! I was given a Space NK voucher by colleague for my birthday last October. I bought a Chantecaille tinted moisturiser. It is lush. I have worn it almost daily and I rekon it will last me until this October. Can't remember how much it was. The voucher was for £50 and I know I had to add to it...

Pupsiecola · 09/07/2018 16:16

Hi Chester and welcome. Not sure I've seen you here before? Although I don't always keep up with the board these days. Very kind of you to try to suggest an SPF for Mint. (Rather ungracious response Mint).

Tsmummy08 · 09/07/2018 17:04

Thanks all for the birthday wishes and product suggestions, much appreciated!

I'll go into my local branch and have a look around this weekend.... I've used some Chantecaille products before, and loved them, oooh and ByTerry - like La Mer they're all outside my normal budget so will use the opportunity to get something a bit luxe :)

Pupsiecola · 09/07/2018 17:06

You could wait for Drunk Elephant....
