Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Happy birthday 🎂 TS
pupsie DH off to States again this week. Should I ask him to get drunk elephant Vit C??

Pupsiecola · 09/07/2018 17:17

JDSTER my skin definitely loves DE Vit C. I didn't realise how much until I got my new bottle! I don't want to be responsible for his shock at the price though!!

JDSTER · 09/07/2018 17:20

Grin What specifically have you noticed?

Pupsiecola · 09/07/2018 17:24

My skin just looks a little brighter and more evenly toned. It could all be in my mind of course Confused

Tsmummy08 · 09/07/2018 17:25

JDSTER Yes, you should!

Pupsie I will do exactly that! THANK YOU for reminding me :)

ChesterBelloc · 09/07/2018 17:25

Hi pupsie, thank you for the welcome - I've posted a few times over the last month or so - mostly in search of a daily facial SPF and a remedy for stubborn blackheads (oh, the glamour!)

mintmagnummm · 09/07/2018 17:50

Sorry Chester I should have said thank you very much for the recommendation, my reply was quite short and blunt so I do apologise. 💐

mintmagnummm · 09/07/2018 17:51

Thanks for pointing it out pupsie (meant genuinely not sarcastically) x

TantricTwist · 09/07/2018 18:08

TS Happy Birthday Smile
I'm not entirely sure now which one I tried in the shop a few times now Grin but it always feels so lovely.
There was a fabulous eye serum they had called skin111 possibly

Welcome Chester >>waves

SophieLion · 09/07/2018 18:15

Hi Chester, I know you've been posting for a while but I can't remember if I actually said hello or not!

Does anyone get spots when they fly? I always seem to get at least one spot every time I go on a plane. They're not the same type of hormonal cyst/under skin spots that I'm doing the treatment for. Normally they're on my cheek somewhere and not massive. I wonder if it's to do with my skin becoming dehydrated on the plane (although not sure if that actually makes sense!)

mintmagnummm · 09/07/2018 18:54

Sophie yes me!!! Thought I was only one!! Skin also looks really shiny. Everyone else always looks 'normal' bloody annoying

mintmagnummm · 09/07/2018 19:42

Bioderma shower oil is great for shaving!

Nofilter · 09/07/2018 20:34

Hello Ladies,

I wondered if you might recommend a good eye cream that complements the broken skin barrier regime I am on?

I found Cerave to be too expensive for the amount so have moved to Eucerin which arrives tomorrow. My skin is looking massively better!

The topical gel is really annoying it peals when it dries so I've not been able to wear it under makeup. Hope it will still work with nightly and days I'm makeup free extra applications!

I'm still a Frezyderm fan loving the stuff and no stinging still

TIASmile

mintmagnummm · 09/07/2018 22:08

Chester I did have another look at the altruist you suggested and realised that it also contains octocrylene which is an ingredient I know for sure makes my eyes sting. Didn't actually see this ingredient in it before because of the angle of the pic of the bottle on amazon, it's kind of obscured. Spf is a bloody nightmare isn't it. After looking online I've realised that soooo many people are in the same boat, trying to find an spf they don't react to! Made me feel a little 'normal!'

EnidButton · 10/07/2018 00:10

Hi Chester 👋🏻 don't think I've said hello yet. The heat is making me even moreforgetful.

Nofilter what would you like from an eye cream? Visible results for a particular issue or just something to make them more comfortable? I really like Kiehl's avocado eye cream. Its good for nourishing the area and making it comfy. I used to get dry, slightly itchy skin there and most eye creams irritated it. (Especially Clinique all about eyes. There's something in that I really react to) Bo suggested the kiehl's ons to me and it's now a staple. It's excellent under make up, not heavy but nourishing and mousturing. Has a teeny tiny hint of green in it which I think helps cosmetically brighten (I have pale white skin with blue inner circles) It lasts a long time as you don't need much. Sold in two sizes. If you can get to a Kiehl's counter I think they do sample sachets. It's not going to do anything long lasting though, nothing 'active' in it.

ChesterBelloc · 10/07/2018 00:11

No worries mint, hope you find something that works in the end!

Hello everyone - I recognise a few names from the French Style threads (waves to Sophie) :-)

I can't be much help with recommendations, I'm afraid, as my skincare routine has been non-existent until very recently, and even now only consists of cleanser, HL Premium lotion and SPF (currently Frezyderm but this stings my eyes a lot, so am in the market for a replacement) in the morning, and cleanser and CeraVe PM lotion at night.

I guess it may be a good thing that I don't have particularly problematic skin that needs lots of different things... less to talk about though!

EnidButton · 10/07/2018 00:35

Forgot to say, thank you whoever mentioned the Essie Watermelon nail polish. Smile (Sophie?) I bought some and it's gorgeous! So cheerful. 💗💅🏻 One of their best formulas too, easy to apply and can get away with one coat.

Need to stop buying nail polish now. Blush

SophieLion · 10/07/2018 07:34

Yes it was me with the Watermelon Enid. It's one of Eddie's classic summer colours that I love.

Has anyone else watched Sam Bunting's you tube video where she says it's ok to use retinoids in the summer? I've no idea how to use links I'm afraid.

SophieLion · 10/07/2018 07:35
  • Essie's
mintmagnummm · 10/07/2018 09:05

Ooh I'm looking for a nice nail polish, may check out the Essie 😊

JDSTER · 10/07/2018 09:43

I love Essie nail polish generally. I’ve been buying them long before they were available in UK, used to stock up in America. Madamoiselle (?sp) is a gorgeous nude pink, looks like nails but better sort of shade.

JDSTER · 10/07/2018 09:46

Actually, Enid mentioning eye cream reminds me its the one thing lacking in my skincare routine. I feel like the skin above my eyes, so eyelid area predominantly is a bit baggy and could do with tightening up. I’m not sure what would be the best active for that area?

TantricTwist · 10/07/2018 10:02

Nofilter I am very happy with my Nivea Q10 plus anti wrinkle eye cream. It is one I will repurchase.

TantricTwist · 10/07/2018 10:09

Sophie yes I've watched Dr Sam's video although I'm not wearing any retinols whilst it's this hot and I'm out in such hot melty sun but once we are back in the mid 20's then yes I'll go back to using it.

I'll be avoiding using retinol on my beach holiday next month as the heat, chlorine and salt water will play havoc I'm sure and SPF will come off so much quicker so it's better to be safe than sorry I think.

mintmagnummm · 10/07/2018 11:38

The GOW eye serum is really nice
