Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

I wonder if should use a velver mitt then for applying self tan moisturiser Hmm

miffy2 · 07/07/2018 11:38

For the gradual tan, I wouldn't bother with a mitt - I just apply it like body lotion and then wash my hands.

TantricTwist · 07/07/2018 12:55

I'll stick to that then.
It's so hot today, I have been out twice today already to 2 local fairs and I'm dripping in sweat already down my back.

I should spray deodorant on my back, does anyone do that, it that even a thing?

miffy2 · 07/07/2018 15:15

I was in the gym at 9, so sweated a bucket or to there. Then we had to dismantle the ancient 14ft trampoline! It took the 5 of us an hour or so and I am exhausted. At least there was some cloud cover and I wore spf of course! Now I am going for a refreshing shower and my AM routine...at 3.15pm!

Retinol and dark circles - any advice?

I have dark circles made more prominent by freckles and to address this had laser treatment a few years ago to remove my freckles which worked great & has been long lasting. It also generally lightened the skin very, very slightly (or removed pigmentation is may be a more accurate description, I’m not 100%).

The snag is that as the eye area needed to be protected during treatment with goggles I now have a small area of comparably darker skin with freckles under each eye and use a fair amount of concealer to even everything out.

Would using a retinol on this area lighten the remaining freckles and is that safe/advisable? (For example 1% every other day)?

I have resilient, non-sensitive skin so not worried about reactions and wear SPF 50.

One product that caught my eye was the Dr Dennis Gross ‘Ferulic + Retinol Triple Correction Eye Serum’.

I’m a bit lost, happy to spend a bit but just don’t want to waste money on unsuitable products so any thoughts gratefully received.

Is it ok to use an spf on face that contains a lot of alcohol?? These seem to be more cosmetically elegant as dry quick but is it ok to use daily long term??

SophieLion · 07/07/2018 20:37

Argh sorry Mint. That's the one a chemist randomly gave me and have never used it myself. Wonder what was in it that caused such a burning sensation..... Had you used something before maybe like AA?

Oh you asked about whether GP referral needed to see an ophthalmologist: I would assume so (unless you go privately). Not that up-to-date with medical care in England these days to be honest.

TantricTwist · 07/07/2018 21:53

3 times I had to get changed today as clothes were damp.

Luckily I had time to pop home between events to change T-shirts.
It would seem denim skirts are a godsend in this weather, it was for me anyway.
I had a look at Chloe Madeley's site etc she does know her stuff.

Ollivander84 · 07/07/2018 22:16

Wearing the makeup revolution foundation drops for a shoot today. Sam bunting cleanser arrived too, I really like it

Ollivander84 new to the thread & haven’t read everything so don’t know the context of your post but your skin is positively glowing & your features are so strong - I have thin brows which won’t grow and am v. jealous of yours!

Ollivander84 · 07/07/2018 22:42

Clear - micropigmentation Wink they're tattooed on. I do use a brow gel on the hair just to give extra colour

Clearoutre · 07/07/2018 22:49

Woah, they did absolutely superb job - never have guessed. I was very close to buying the glossierboy brow gel - might have to place an order now.

Ollivander84 · 07/07/2018 22:52

She is incredible, I wouldn't have gone to anyone else! I'm using Barry M take a brow, colour works on me and it's cheap for a giant tube

EnidButton · 08/07/2018 00:44

Where is your dress (?) from Olli please? Feel like I recognise it. Looking good btw. Your skin is glowing!

I am going to buy the No7 cleansing gel. Had a look at the ingredients and it looks fine to me. Like that it has b5 in it and the price (£11) is waaay better than the daft EH price. I think it's worth a try. As a first cleanse after wearing make up.

Ollivander84 · 08/07/2018 01:14

It's the Elsie dress from lady v London Smile

TantricTwist · 08/07/2018 08:15

Enid Boots also have a cleansing balm in a pot the exact same colour as TTDO which seems to have better reviews

ClosdesMouches · 08/07/2018 08:44

I ordered the Dr Sam cleanser last Sunday, it was dispatched on Wednesday and arrived yesterday. I've used it once and I like it so far. I find most cleansers, even the gentle non foaming ones, to be problematic so fingers crossed for Dr Sam. I read here a while ago about Alpha H Balancing Cleanser which I tried and like also.
My only issue with Dr Sam is that having watched the video, I'm worried about doing that one minute massage - it will make my face very red.
Did anyone else notice that Dr Sam didn't use the cleanser on her neck? I have always cleansed my face and neck with the same product.

mintmagnummm · 08/07/2018 09:04

Tant which balm exactly is the boots one please?

Ok so as you all know I've been searching for a face spf and I'm disappointed to say I still have found it! The ones I've tried are...
Green people scent free (felt heavy and suffocating on my face but didn't sting)
Australian gold (awful just bloody awful!)
Avene spf 50 fluid fragrance free (kindly sent to me by Sophie. This stung sooo bad I had to wash off immediately)
Kiehls ultra light uv fluid (no stinging and thought this could be the one but after 2 days my skin was so spotty and congested and very oily)
Ultrasun 30 and sports 50 (this brand gets rave reviews, but no just no!! Feels suffocating, drying and tingles)
Is clinical eclipse spf 50 (had high hopes for this one, no stinging at all but was too greasy and could feel it on my skin which I just hate!)

I think that's all lol! I used frezyderm this morn out of desperation and now my eyes are streaming and stinging like hell! I'm honestly fed up now!! I desperately need a facial one I'm happy to slather on as it's so hot here at the moment so can't even get away without applying any until I find one! I don't want to go down the Japan/Korean route as want something I can rely on being delivered quick and easy!
There's has to be something out there for me!!!!

MrsDOnofrio · 08/07/2018 10:50

mint have you tried Heliocare? I use the 360 oil free gel and it’s the only one that doesn’t sting my eyes, and I also use it around my eyes when I use Frezyderm. It’s a chemical sunscreen but I’m sure there’s a mineral one in their range. The whole range is highly rated I believe and it protected me when I was working in 35 degree heat for a month in Sri Lanka last year.

Pupsiecola · 08/07/2018 11:09

Mint when I was in Boots I saw a LRP specifically for sensitive eyes. Also, I am loving the Biore ones and am about to order a few more bottles (they are small). If you're organised they are easy to get. I ordered on eBay. They were here a week later.

mintmagnummm · 08/07/2018 11:18

MrsD I did look at heliocare but can't remember why I ruled them out, I'll have another look thank you!

Pupsie I'm very organised, quite annoyingly so lol. Can you link the exact product it is please? Also would that one also be suitable for a beach holiday??

Pupsiecola · 08/07/2018 11:28

Full details in a photo further up. Pink bottle and blue bottle. I'm just on my way out.

mintmagnummm · 08/07/2018 11:33

Ah heliocare.....PERFUME!! Whyyyyyy?! Is it worth still trying??

mintmagnummm · 08/07/2018 11:34

Oh yes Pupsie thank you. Is it ok for holidays too??

JDSTER · 08/07/2018 12:20

mint I know it’s frustrating for you but probably worth trying heliocare. They do have sample sizes so I’d contact them directly, explain your issues and see if they’ll send some out. Same with LRP- is there any there you could try? They have UK offices, again contact them directly and request some samples.
As pupsie says Japanese SPFs don’t take that long to arrive and if you’re at the point of having nothing that’s working, it’s worth a try isn’t it? Pink Biore I’ve mentioned lots of times and photographed. Check out reviews by Japanese beauty bloggers who have lookec extensively at such things. I can’t say for sure if ok for holidays but that and a decent hat and staying out of midday sun is better than no spf if it works for you!
