Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a lightbulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Fools wee coloured is the slight danger zone, but you're not there yet. Oh dear, am I enabling on multiple threads now, eek! Erh, I'm told the Sainsbury's baguettes are very nice Confused

Nofilter, when I said most actives are off the table with Rosacea, retinoids are at the top of that list. Some dermatologists do choose to treat it with retinoids but it's not standard treatment and definitely wouldn't encourage anyone with Rosacea to go at alone.

I'd leave the Aesop cleanser, anything vaguely 'natural' is unlikely to be that great for Rosacea, especially if it's been hanging around for a while. AFAIK the bumpy texture is part of Rosacea and probably means its progressed to a certain stage, I think it's really down to medication at that point to tackle it but a GP or dermatologist will know better.

Shop, meant to ask on the last thread when you mentioned the Boots Acne Clinic, do you mind giving a run through of the process?

JDSTER, yes that was my hesitance too. I had wanted to get the gel capsules too but feared the Biotin too much. Thanks for being the guinea pig Grin I know there is some exception about Biotin causing breakouts if it's taken with something else or formulated with something else but I've forgotten what it was Blush

I’m sure it’s with Silica Bo Grin

mintmagnummm · 10/06/2018 20:27

Thanks JDSTER and Another, appreciate the ingredients listing.
I have a bad feeling it is the frezyderm affecting my eyes, but now what do I try?? I love the way frezy feels and disappears without drying my skin or making me a greasy slimy mess! Is there anything else I could love as much?? Bo?? Anyone? Lol. I've tried lrp, avene, ultrasun, sunsense, eucerin, that's all I can think of for now.

SallieSallow · 10/06/2018 20:28

Kew ultrasun is quite a sticky, tacky cream that takes a bit of rubbing in, but once rubbed in it dries quite matte and I found it fine under makeup. It left a bit of a white cast on me which is why I looked for alternatives but other than that I liked it and think there's a tinted one now. Frezyderm is like a primer (think benefit porefessional or smashbox photo finish) in texture and needs minimal rubbing in, dries clear and matte. I really like it but as you'll see from the thread a few here are having issues with it irritating their eyes.

I think I asked on the last thread and I think I know the answer but double checking, is a cleansing balm definitely a first cleanse? And are they any better/worse than oils?

JDSTER I had that LRP spray spf & didn't find it great over makeup so didn't repurchase, I prefer the bioderma spf spray.

TantricTwist · 10/06/2018 20:29

JDSTER the Nivea double effects is like a dry oil, so it doesnt leave a film but is oily enought to remove mascara, if that makes sense. I've just used it now in fact so I could describe it to you.

mintmagnummm · 10/06/2018 20:37

I might go back to the eucerin spf 50, I'm sure I liked that

botemp · 10/06/2018 20:42

A cleansing balm is basically a solid cleansing oil Sallie, it's an oil that is solid at room temperature and cupon contact with the skin it melts it into an oil.

I only ever tried that LRP spray in store, it seemed very greasy to me. I'm still happily using the Bioderma top up spray again this year.

I've just looked it up JDSTER, it's B5. This article was quite informative on it and biotin itself. It's got me thinking again as I remember looking into B5 as an oral supplement for acne sufferers when we were trying to figure out the magic of Cicaplast for Enid way back when and still no one has bought me something crystal for our anniversary. That article does seem to indicate a deficiency of B5 definitely causes breakouts and an excess of biotin can induce that.

I'm definitely not biotin deficient, hair grows quick and is not prone to breakage, nails are exceptionally strong and I eat a lot of biotin rich foods so I definitely fear to throw it off balance through supplementation. I may just attempt the liquid even though it seems really gross for some reason, like drinking aloe vera

SallieSallow · 10/06/2018 21:04

Thanks Bo that's what I thought but it's years since I used one and it was back in the day before I knew about 1st and 2nd cleanses. And yes I found the LRP spray quite greasy too. I love the bioderma one though occasionally the nozzle goes duff and dribbles rather than sprays, other than that it's great.

Kewcumber · 10/06/2018 21:31

I rarely wear makeup so I'm not worries in how make up goes on over the top. I like a bit of primer and occasionally some balance and glow when I'm rolling the boat out.

Maybe I'll try the Frezyderm and keep my fingers crossed it doesn;t irriate my eyes as primer texture sounds right up my street.

Is the AMzon £15 one the best deal at the moment?

JDSTER · 10/06/2018 21:35

Hmm about LRP spray. I haven’t tried it yet. Bioderma was hopeless. The spray just stopped working.

Thanks for info bo. I’ll let you know how I get on. I’ve read through your very comprehensive document on retinoids. Thank you. That new crystal retinal by Medik 8 you mentioned really caught my eye. I’ve been on their website and it looks very interesting. I’m a bit bored of differin but not ready to make the jump to derm and tret

Thanks Tant for trying out Nivea again to give me your appraisal of it Smile

mintmagnummm · 10/06/2018 22:18

I've been very naughty and tried to squeeze a hard lump on my cheek which looked like a blocked pore. I can see a bit of a head on it so thought it would be ok, it's kind of like an inflamed pore with a hole in middle if that makes sense! Anyway nothing came out, it bled and now it's red and even more inflamed! It's gonna be one of those horrible ones by tomorrow where it looks like a whitehead but popping it will make it worse! Arrrrrrrrrgh

TantricTwist · 10/06/2018 22:45

I've got the LRP SPF mist and I really like it for emergencies, you know if you come out of work and it's suddenly sunny and you want that extra protection, it's always in my bag.

The Ultrasun Face SPF30 I have now rubs in and dries really quickly, the one I had a couple of years ago seemed more greasy.

I only ever use SPF 30 though never spf 50. My DS had a bad reaction to an SPF 50 so I've never bought one since esp as there is barely any difference imho.

TantricTwist · 10/06/2018 22:55

Re retinol JDSTER I think the mix of ingredients in the Neostrata retinol + NAG really suited my skin and I would never have tried it if lovely Pupsie hadn't got on with it.

It has dramatically evened out my skin which was uneven and reddish for years, it has been nothing short of miraculous, plus it's lasted bloody ages and is a lovely consistency.

TantricTwist · 10/06/2018 22:57

Actually my LRP SPF mist is 50 but its been fine.

bonfireheart · 10/06/2018 23:15

How are you all finding GOW compared to The Ordinary? I just got into TO and Victoria Health and then they stopped selling it. The GOW seem really similar but I have a shelf full of TO products to use up!

TantricTwist · 10/06/2018 23:45

Bo Happy 15th Anniversary 🥂🍾

EnidButton · 11/06/2018 01:18

Bunch of gasbags! I can't keep up. Grin

Hope the shoot went well Olli you look incredible. Serious hair envy. 😍

I have two angry spots, one is right on the centre of my top lip and I've concluded that that's the most painful place of the face to squeeze get a spot. Blaming the weather making my skin more oily, stress and the wheat I ate last weekend. My whole body/skin feels irritated. Plan on eating well this week and sone mindfulness, to get things balanced again.

Glimpsed something about sore eyes at the end of the thread. Mine have been puffy with crusty bits the past two days and I think it's hay fever. I don't really get it properly but occasionally if it's high then I get mild symptoms. So it could be that if anyone's having issues. It's been dry for too long, we need a little bit of rain to dampen the ground.

mintmagnummm · 11/06/2018 06:13

I put my azelaic acid just on my sore spot last night, think it's helped a little....

mintmagnummm · 11/06/2018 07:09

Right it is 100% frezyderm making my eyes sore! During my routine this morn I waited few seconds after every step (avene cleanser, Vichy spray, Vichy m89 and my usual eye drops) no stinging at all and I even made a point of putting all these right over my eyes. Then I applied frezyderm and within 1 second eyes streaming and stinging soooo bad!!!! Absolutely gutted!

Violet18 · 11/06/2018 08:25

Mint, I was gutted about the Frezyderm too! I had some Avene anti-aging SPF50 left so this is what I use under my eyes, then Frezyderm on the rest of my face. This seems to work for me. Have to be careful washing it off in the pm though.

It sounds like you put a lot of products on your eyes though prior to the Frezyderm. Have you tried it on its own?

mintmagnummm · 11/06/2018 10:36

Violet I don't usually put a lot on my eyes, it was just this morning to determine if it was in fact the frezyderm.

Violet18 · 11/06/2018 11:17

Ah right, that makes sense. I find it so frustrating when my eyes react. I used Burt's Bees cleansing wash for a short time, before I started my new regime, not realising it was that hurting my eyes! I went to the optician too, convinced I had something wrong...I didn't Blush

mintmagnummm · 11/06/2018 11:47

Yes it's bloody annoying! Thing is I can't afford to buy separate eye spf and continue frezyderm for rest of face! I've bought a new spf today, I'll trial it this week and if all good I shall shout it out for you Grin
