I really don’t “get” Meghan Markle’s style choices

So she wore this yesterday.
I like the jacket, bag & shoes. Dress, not keen, to me, it looks like something from H&M. Then the cross body bag & jacket on shoulders. To me, she looks untidy.
Maybe I should accept that I am officially middle aged. But this is not how I expect someone soon to be in the Royal Family to dress.
To be fair to her, she has definitely smartened up Harry. So I guess she knows what she is doing.... I just can’t see it

Put your arms in the cunting sleeves, lady.

Her style is crap, but I see she has moved away from the same wool wrap coats she has worn for the last 6+ months so credit to her for that.

Qwertytypewriter · 19/04/2018 05:49

I know this is how it works, the press, and all women, get to judge whether new royal women meet their style standards... but it seems so desperately shallow, and so incredibly counter to feminist principles that I find it quite depressing.

UniqueAsAUnicorn · 19/04/2018 05:57
Hmm

'untidy'

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 19/04/2018 05:58

Seriously, did you really need to start a thread about this?

She's a woman, in a relationship that brings her under massive public scrutiny.

It must be so tricky for her to negotiate the protocols of becoming a royal without every bored woman in range feeling like they can mouth off about how she's not good enough.

Just stop it please.

DirtyBlonde · 19/04/2018 05:59

Well, of course she's moved away from coats Grin it was well over 20 in much of Britain yesterday!

I didn't like the coats - they all seemed rather too bulky.

snowsun · 19/04/2018 06:01

What is appropriate attire ? Matching hat and cost and a clutch bag ?

I like the fact she wears her own style. I think she looks confident so To me it's a winner. She also looks like she's embracing the good weather rather than wearing one outfit fits all occasions.

AuntieStella · 19/04/2018 06:02

I don't actullay seewhy anyone should 'stop it'

Commenting in the appearance of someone who has taken up what is essentially a decorative role isn't exceptional.

People don't have to open the thread or comment if they don't want to. And 'hide thread' is a useful function.

Though of course encouraging people to use the topics might mean that those who don't like to discuss the Royal Family, or Style and Beauty could hide the whole damned lot in a one-r

AltheaorDonna · 19/04/2018 06:04

OMG who actually cares?

Teatogo · 19/04/2018 06:06

I think she looks awesome, modern and fresh. I also think she has stepped up to her new role with an incredible amount of capability.

I think her and Harry together really do make a formidable team. I hope it works for them

BuckysRoboticArm · 19/04/2018 06:12

I think you’ve been looking at Kate pictures for too many years and have certain expectations.

Meghan was never going to dive straight into mumsy or frumpy outfits. Fwiw I thought she looked really good. She’s pretty new to this too.

I’m sure plenty of women said the same about Diana back in the day anyway.

Laughing at her “moving away from the same wool coats.” Yes, it’s called spring 😂

OutComeTheWolves · 19/04/2018 06:21

I'm not a royalist by any means but I remember the pics of Kate Middleton when she split up with William and was out clubbing all the time - she looked great. I imagine it must be very difficult for Royal women to walk the line between choosing clothes that they like but which still fall in line with royal protocol. I know I have a hard time choosing work clothes that I actually like although my budget is admittedly slightly smaller than Kate and Meghan's.

pictish · 19/04/2018 06:23

Who is asking you to?
Seriously...who is asking you to ‘get’ Meghan Markles’ style choices?

I don’t understand why you feel compelled to opinionate on them. Is there a reason she might seek your approval on what handbag she uses?

I probably don’t like some of your clothes. And so what?

DuchyDuke · 19/04/2018 06:24

Megan has amazing style. Far better than the boring choices Kate makes

JeNeSuisPasVotreMiel · 19/04/2018 06:25

I can hide the thread, yes, but that doesn't erase the fact that it exists. I'm not bothered on my own account but the fact that this bitchy and critical behaviour is enabled by threads like this is really sad.

She hasn't entered the relationship for kudos, and people saying that she's in a public position seem to miss the irony that without the public (i.e. Me and you) paying any attention, she wouldn't be under massive scrutiny like this.

FWIW, I think she is beautiful and could wear a sack and still outshine me any day.

But it's also not for me to criticise.

RedDwarves · 19/04/2018 06:26

It’s not spring where I am and I don’t follow UK weather. No need to get arsey because I took a jab at her wool coats.

pictish · 19/04/2018 06:26

“To be fair to her, she has definitely smartened up Harry. So I guess she knows what she is doing.... I just can’t see it”

Did she tell you that herself did she? “I’ve smartened Harry right up.”

What are you on about?

pictish · 19/04/2018 06:36

OP you are aware that they have staff to style, shop for and dress them...aren’t you?

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 19/04/2018 06:37

She looked happy and interested, that’s the important thing. I can’t get too worked up about her style choices.

I might have raised an eyebrow if it had been Harry in the dress, but even then, I’d have forgiven him as long as he remembered to accessorise with matching shoes, handbag and hat.

And I think you need to recalibrate on what untidy means by coming to have a look at me!

octonaught · 19/04/2018 06:40

At the moment, Meghan is paying for her own clothes, apparently.
When she marries, apparently she gets an allowance from Prince Charles (as does Kate) and for overseas trips, she will get an allowance from the Foreign Office as she is representing the country.

I guess for me, she is an ambassador for the UK, or soon to be.
I personally think her dress Swansea distracts from the job.

Dress *sense, not Swansea

LegoPiecesEverywhere · 19/04/2018 06:47

I just looked up the outfit and like it. She looks great.

Then again I find most of the choices on this board very frumpy op so maybe I am not your target market.

NerrSnerr · 19/04/2018 06:49

Distracts from the job? You're talking like she turned up in hot pants! (Even though Megan would look great in hot pants).

You really don't have to 'get' how she dresses. She is her own human person who can decide (with our without staff) what to wear. She's under so much scrutiny for what she wears, just for choosing to marry the man she loves. I think we need to move away from the obsession that everyone has to look perfect all of the time. Although, I can't see anything wrong with her outfit.

I really don’t “get” Meghan Markle’s style choices
clumsyduck · 19/04/2018 06:53

Well firstly it looks like the kind of high fashion stuff that only some people can wear like I would literally look a complete twat . I think she looks fine !
But also people really shouldn't care that much either poor woman . Sad

tinytemper66 · 19/04/2018 06:53

I think she looks great and you obviously have too much time on your hands.

TERFousBreakdown · 19/04/2018 07:00

Oh, come on, that's a great outfit. And I much prefer it to the ultra conservative styles Kate tends to sport. Also, both of them are very welcome to wear whatever they want, regardless whether I like it or not.

I wish the Monarchy would just go away. It's outdated and anti-egalitarian AF. I hate the idea. But there are tons of good criticisms of it that don't include expecting strange women to dress as we please.
