I really don’t “get” Meghan Markle’s style choices

So she wore this yesterday.
I like the jacket, bag & shoes. Dress, not keen, to me, it looks like something from H&M. Then the cross body bag & jacket on shoulders. To me, she looks untidy.
Maybe I should accept that I am officially middle aged. But this is not how I expect someone soon to be in the Royal Family to dress.
To be fair to her, she has definitely smartened up Harry. So I guess she knows what she is doing.... I just can’t see it

I think it’s a lovely dress.

ALittleAubergine · 21/04/2018 14:16

I'm sure I remember similar constant judgment of Kate as well before they had the first child. Since then it seems to have calmed the down a bit. Too young to remember and too lazy to look it up but wouldn't surprise me if Diana had similar treatment. Not sure if Prince philip ever did. Probably not for his style, more for other things. And Queen Mother etc. And one day George's other half will face constant criticism too no doubt.

Alpineflowers · 21/04/2018 14:28

Her SIL Sarah 'Fergie' Ferguson got the worst stick. She was constantly criticised on her dress sense

BennyTheBall · 21/04/2018 14:34

I like that she is trendy and slightly unusual.

I'll be a bit disappointed if she has her wings clipped and starts dressing like Kate - sensible, safe and dull.

ALittleAubergine · 21/04/2018 14:37

Oh yes, Fergie and I think she's still being constantly criticised for everything and her daughters as well. And Prince Andrew too. Although in his case it seems to be more because of things he's done or been involved with. Only the women getting judged for not looking "right".

SlowlyShrinking · 21/04/2018 14:37

I really like the dress/outfit. She looks really happy too Smile

MorningsEleven · 21/04/2018 14:44

She looks like she's doing the walk of shame in her nan's apron.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 21/04/2018 16:00

I love the green dress that's in the papers today.

GrimDamnFanjo · 21/04/2018 17:02

A big part of her job is going to be promoting British fashion I expect. I really like it when Kate has worn something from a small designer. It must be like Christmas for their turnover when that happens.

cherrytrees123 · 21/04/2018 18:42

I see she's being slated for not wearing tights now, and having a dress which is too low cut. Also, she's obviously had her hair dyed after some comment about a few grey hairs. Honestly, who would want her role? Horrendous.

Thebirthdayparty · 21/04/2018 19:28

I love the green dress too. I’m not keen on the jacket with it but I guess she has to look formal (ish). I’m glad she has tossed the so called no wearing black royal rule aside. Black looks great on her. I think she knows exactly what suits her and has a definite style, the style of a confident woman.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 21/04/2018 19:48

Another success today, the green is a lovely colour on her.

Kate is naturally beautiful and may one day be a queen. MM is not terribly important in the pecking order.

octonaught · 21/04/2018 21:51

Tonight’s Stella McCartney dress was very chic

I think she will wear quite a tailored, pared down wedding dress. I don’t see her in anything Lacey.
The last couple of days, Meghan has really upped her game

Individually all the items are fine, it's just the way she is wearing the cross body under the jacket which she has slung over the shoulders is just wrong.
She could have
a - worn the jacket properly arms in with a clutch or small hand bag, the crossbody is off with the dress
b left the jacket off completely
c worn a bolero style cardi which would have been lighter & more appropriate given the tempetures.
Dress fine but the accessories totally mismatched apart from the shoes.
She's beautiful, they look so happy & unified & I'm sure they will do great things.... but hey this is the style & beauty forum & we are entitled to give our opinion. I think her style has been quite marmite so far but I'm glad she is sticking to what she likes & has some originality & individuality in what is a very restrictive role

MistressDeeCee · 21/04/2018 23:00

How many "I don't like Meghan so I'll pick on her clothes as a safer subject to be bitchy about & hopefully posters' replies will say what I really want to say but aren't brave enough to" threads are there going to be?

I suppose you'll all knock yourself out now May is approaching. Upping the ante in pointlessness.

Crack on.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 21/04/2018 23:08

I did think at first her bridal dress would be quite boho but I think now it might be more simple and structured.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 21/04/2018 23:13

Maybe something like this

I really don’t “get” Meghan Markle’s style choices
Alpineflowers · 21/04/2018 23:32

Yes a sleek simple look.
The lacy tailored Grace Kelly look has already been done by Kate Middleton.
I do wonder, since the engagement, if they aren't already trying for a little one? Wouldn't blame them, as they are both knocking on a bit.

octonaught · 21/04/2018 23:36

I agree Betty that it will be quite simple.
I remember reading somewhere that she liked Caroline Bessette Kennedy’s wedding dress. That black polo neck & fawn midi skirt she wore to her first engagement was very CBK. Meghan
CBK
Even before seeing tonight’s dress, I thought Meghan might wear a caped wedding dress. here

Diana was constantly under scrutiny for her appearance, usually her weight sadly - and Fergie also, but more critically as she had the fat police after her from the beginning.

pallisers · 22/04/2018 00:01

really don't like the caped look. But I do like a lot of MM's clothes - the black trouser suit thing she wore to the first evening engagement was fab. And her shoes are always lovely. Catherine Cambridge never seems to get shoes right unless they are walking shoes or boots - maybe she is better with casual clothes. I also think Catherine's clothes seem to fit her too tightly/be too short in the waist - there is often something very constricted about her look (as well as the bad shoes).

From my brief look at the photos of the royal birthday thing (god I can't imagine anything worse for a 92 year old to endure ... when she swore her loyalty to the UK post war she was probably thinking more of defending the nation on the beaches than being bored to death at a concert in her 90s), the queen was beautifully dressed as ever but Camilla's outfit was the best one there to me.

My neighbour's mother just died aged 108 (fine up till the end really). Imagine if that happens Charles ...

"I suppose you'll all knock yourself out now May is approaching. Upping the ante in pointlessness.

If this was spamming AIBU or chat, I'd agree with you. But it's in the flipping topic!!

octonaught · 24/04/2018 09:32

Meghan has been off the front pages for a whole 24 hours.
I did however notice that she has a new hairstyle. I really like this messy bun look but it definitely looks like it has done by a stylsit.
I suspect Amanda Cook Tucker was busy yesterday dashing between KP & the Lindo Wing!!

OdileDeCaray · 24/04/2018 09:36

MEghan appears to be wearing clothes straight off the peg as it were. That's why nothing really flatters her. If she hires a personal seamstress they will make slight alterations so that each garment is tailored to her figure and the clothing will fit much better and be far more flattering.
