I really don’t “get” Meghan Markle’s style choices

So she wore this yesterday.
I like the jacket, bag & shoes. Dress, not keen, to me, it looks like something from H&M. Then the cross body bag & jacket on shoulders. To me, she looks untidy.
Maybe I should accept that I am officially middle aged. But this is not how I expect someone soon to be in the Royal Family to dress.
To be fair to her, she has definitely smartened up Harry. So I guess she knows what she is doing.... I just can’t see it

I think she looks awesome, modern and fresh.

I like her style in the main, it’s how most of my 30 something friends & myself would dress if having to smarten up. Obviously Kate has to toe the line but I don’t know anyone youngish who would choose to dress like her.

Queen Letizia has great style but she’s in her late 40s plus she’s uber petite which takes away any frump factor.

GreenStars · 19/04/2018 09:42

What the fuck has it got to do with you? She might think you look a load of tosh too but I imagine has better things to do than whine about it online.
'Appropriate attire' what sodding century are we in?

octonaught · 19/04/2018 09:53

In terms of Royal Style, I quite like Mary of Denmark here or Queen Rania of Jordan here.

I guess the difference is Kate, Mary & Rania are either future or actual queens, and are dressing appropriately for their position. Meghan is the future wife of 6th in line to the throne, so I guess she can “shake things up a bit”. I just haven’t seen much Meghan has worn which I have liked, apart from the white coat and beret to the commonwealth service. I guess she just appeals to a different generation. I did however, like her wardrobe on SUITS, but she was playing a lawyer, so bound to more conservative. here

Oh hello Bluntness

I don’t get how Chloe Sevigny got praised back in the day for her style.
She’s blonde & blue eyed, should that even be relevant.

Being a person “of colour” myself, I do think you are doing anyone any favours by dragging race into a conversation about mere clothes.

In my OP, I said (and I paraphrase) that I don’t get get Meghan’s fashion choices, as I am middle aged. Younger pp’s have said that is how they would dress for that age group. That’s it.

I don’t think

To me it looks like she was going out in the dress only, which is sleeveless. Someone said "you can't show your shoulders ShockShock" but it was too late in the day so she had to borrow someone else's blazer. Trouble is the blazer doesn't fit properly so she tried to hide the fact by just draping.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 19/04/2018 10:09

It’s clear some thought is going into her outfits in general. She wants to do the right thing by whatever set of gawpers are surrounding her on any given occasion.

For the youth forum yesterday, she chose a stripes and dungaree style, reminiscent of a toned-down CBBC presenter.

She has also done tartan in Scotland, a touch of emerald in Ireland and the Prince of Wales check in Wales.

She may even be planning to slip into her Geri Halliwell-esque Union Jack mini dress for the evening do of her wedding - egged on by Harry of course.

And don’t forget, the Royal Family has form for thematic dressing. The moment they arrive at Balmoral, the trunk with kilts gets opened.

Meghan will fit right in!

But Mary of Denmark is older and fulfulling the Eurocentric princes ideal for the older generation. Her role models are different to the ones that a young Meghan, with also various differing cultural appreciations will be exposed to and aspire to. I agree that the jacket looks a bit afterthought but she looks stylish and ready for the job imo. Her job isn't directing Siemens or working for NASA so she can have fun with her style and the weather. Don't forget that she is advertising herself in her own way. I like the bag, ....better take a look at that website.

Also

Don't forget that in the 90's Diana wore gold earrings and bomber styled jackets which was very much the style of black American women, and she was lauded on her style over there but lost lots of respect by Sloanes over here. Admittedly she didn't wear the gold earrings and bomber style jacket together at the same time.

I am always a bit sad to see someone who is not making the most of themselves, and I don't think Meghan is. She often wears clothes better suited to a woman with a much bigger frame (the McQueen trouser suit was an exception and she looked incredible). This is why she looks untidy, as a PP said. Wear things tailored to fit and in proportion to your frame and they'll flatter you. People will notice you and not your ill-fitting clothing.

She also wears incredibly unflattering colours, and I thought Prince Harry's new Kooples style clothing looks incredibly cheap and ugly. Redheads should never wear white. Sack the stylist and hire whoever dressed her for Suits, please.

3stonedown · 19/04/2018 11:39

I think she looks great, Modern but not too out there.

RedDwarves · 19/04/2018 11:42

Yes, I agree that it’s the fit and colour palette that lets her down.

thesaurusgirl · 19/04/2018 11:45

I have mentioned this about a million times on MN over the years, but I once attended a conference with Queen Rania as the speaker and she looked sensational. Wearing black trousers and a white blouse. I'd have looked like a waitress. She just has a phenomenal way of carrying herself. Also, GOOD HAIR.

Mulberrysilk · 19/04/2018 11:46

Its ok. You don't have to 'get it'. Just leave her be.

thesaurusgirl · 19/04/2018 11:50

Christ, the holier-than-thous.

She doesn't look good in many of her clothes. Harry, all of a sudden, looks atrocious. We pay for them (bored of that old shitwankery about the Cornwall trillions, thanks), we get to say what we think of them.

Thebirthdayparty · 19/04/2018 11:54

Distracts from the job^

Of hand shaking. Grin

They are invited to events to raise publicity. People talking about their wardrobes increases publicity.

As a PP said, she thankfully is stylish enough and knows herself well enough to feel confident without sinking into Kate’s older and very safe clothes. Long may it continue!

truthybeach · 19/04/2018 11:58

I just love the fact she wears trousers & appears comfortable in herself.

findingmyfeet12 · 19/04/2018 12:02

I don't particularly like her outfit. I remember the last time round that those types of shoes were fashionable and I wasn't a fan then either.

I think she's looked great every other time I've seen her though. She wore a slightly longer skirt and boots combination once that was particularly nice.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 19/04/2018 12:11

We can’t discuss a public figures clothes in style and beauty? someone who represents our country on public engagements? OP is discussing her clothes and fashion sense not giving Megan a character assassination.

findingmyfeet12 · 19/04/2018 12:14

We can't discuss it Betty but only if we love what she's wearing and only say positive things.

findingmyfeet12 · 19/04/2018 12:15

*can

ABuckToothedGirlinLuxembourg · 19/04/2018 12:15

She’s so stylish, I love the way she dresses, such a breath of fresh air compared to the way the rest of them dress.

truthybeach · 19/04/2018 12:18

I personally don’t mind if people dissect what others wear or if they like it or not. I think VB has zero style but others love her.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 19/04/2018 12:19

I agree thesauresgirl she looks swamped in a lot of her clothes but that black trouser suit she looked stunning.

I really don’t “get” Meghan Markle’s style choices
BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 19/04/2018 12:23

Ah I get it now findingmyfeet....... well I thought she looked swamped in this outfit, did nothing for her, just for balance!

I really don’t “get” Meghan Markle’s style choices
octonaught · 19/04/2018 14:16

Yes, thesaurus girl is spot in, its the fit that’s the problem.
I think that’s why I liked the white coat & beret combo. here

She is tiny, probably a size6, which is why off the peg, even an 8 is swamping her. I think once she starts getting her clothes fitted properly she will look so much better. She should definitely wear more sharp tailoring like the McQueen suit as it really suits her. Wrap coats unfortunately look like dressing gowns on her.

I think the matchy matchy thing will not work with Harry as she has a winter colouring and he is autumn. That’s why she looked a bit drab in beige on Christmas Day. Colour combos on him will not suit her & vice versa. She really does need a stylist to at least help her tweak her style
