Not well expressed above. These were supposed to be friends; he's been invited on their three week journey around Europe (by one of them) post A levels several times, but was thinking he would go to New Zealand to work in autumn and was planning on working and saving money for that. We revealed some money we had been saving for him and said, "ask if it works", and he has been turned down as not fitting profile. Another gang have said, come with us; we'll make it work. Seriously, I don't know how to help him ride this one. Any advice from my best anonymous friends?

mrsreynolds · 14/03/2018 21:15

Well

What a bunch of little shits 😡

Sorry for your ds sock

UnnecessaryFennel · 14/03/2018 21:25

So how does he feel about going with the second group? You weren't too keen on the NZ trip, is that right?

OCSockOrphanage · 14/03/2018 21:36

NZ was as long as 23 months trip and this is just a post A level holiday fennel. Most of those going are studious (not DS) and a bit driven. DS is a bit vague about plans, but intends to do a professional chef course and then see what takes his fancy. He wants to make animated films but understands that only the best get there, and he has no real record as an artist, so doing something else, fairly creative for preference, would give him some space to build the portfolio he will need. After 14 years in educational institutions, he may need some time to re-orient.

OCSockOrphanage · 14/03/2018 21:37

He doesn't fancy five days drinking on a Greek island but was touched to have been invited!

OCSockOrphanage · 14/03/2018 21:55

Fennel, I think he'd be alone too much in NZ. That's all really.

positivepineapple · 14/03/2018 22:02

Oh Sock That's awful for you & DS, I'm so sorry.

I feel for you. I'm afraid I don't have any advice, all I can say is - if they can do something like this so easily, he's better off without them (no help in regards to feelings I know)

Teenage years are hard, I wouldn't want to do it again, but now is when it gets better. The world is his oyster, he will make lots of friends now, with genuine connections that will last for life and soon this will become insignificant Thanks

teta · 14/03/2018 22:08

I would let him go with the second group. This ‘rearranging’ happened with Dd and her friends last year and I think it’s fairly common. Its hard not to take offence ( especially as a parent & mum). However long-term my Dd has remained friends with the same people and not born a grudge ( unlike me!).
Could your Ds do a catering course this year in the uk and then use it to get a job in New Zealand the following year? I imagine it would be hard to gravitate from school to overseas without a realignment period.

OCSockOrphanage · 14/03/2018 22:42

Sadly,or not, he doesn't want to go with the party group! It's not about letting him go, it's the rejection he's today experienced from the people he thought were friends.

MrsGruber · 14/03/2018 22:48

Sorry to hear about that OC - glad other friends are offering options.
.

UnnecessaryFennel · 15/03/2018 06:42

Hope ds is feeling a bit better this morning sock. Friendship groups can be so complex and tricky in the teen years.

SOTD is 4160's Rhubarb & Custard.

auberginesrus · 15/03/2018 07:45

Your poor ds Sock, hope he doesnt let it affect him too much. Horrible age in so many ways Sad

SOTD is 4160s Rosa Robes from my samples. Last time I tried it ds2 said it smelt like Love heart sweets. It is very sweet and fruity on initial spray but I seem to remember the dry down being lovely. It's to help me decide against buying some at half price!

auberginesrus · 15/03/2018 07:45

Rosa Ribes even!

BigPuddleOfFloofyCatOnTheFloor · 15/03/2018 08:14

Oh sock your poor DS. It's so hard seeing them hurt. Do you think trying to turn it more positive eg "better to know what these "friends" are like now before you would have found out in a different country" and that he has freedom to make his own choices/decisions about holiday/travelling without giving a shit what they think? And that he is moving into a stage of life where you find different friends - adults rather than childhood/younger friends? Sorry if that is no use at all. It's really difficult not being able to "fix" stuff for them yourself, isn't it. The stakes seem to get so much bigger and important as they get older.

One of mine (slightly younger) was recently "pranked" (hate that word almost as much as banter) by her friends, not funny and left her in tears - basically a group of them were just laughing at her expense. All we could do was present it as above eg now you know what they are really like, rise above it and you can always come and vent to us, we are always here for you etc. (And then I resisted the temptation to make wax dolls of them and stick pins in them. Angry)

A nice comforting and "armouring" perfume for you today? I loved your "best anonymous friends" phrase, btw. In RL my (few Grin) friends all have much younger DC as I had mine young so I get a lot of teen advice from MN in general. And anyway on this thread a lot of us aren't anonymous to each other with all the little parcels flying about! Support for all kinds of problems here, not just perfume! Thanks

BigPuddleOfFloofyCatOnTheFloor · 15/03/2018 08:15

Oh and it's all very well giving advice, but if it was actually my own DCs I would probably be locking them in the attic to prevent them travelling without me there, so feel free to totally disregard me Grin

OCSockOrphanage · 15/03/2018 08:38

Thank you all so much for the words of wisdom and comfort; they were much appreciated last night, and are lifting me this morning. DH suggested that one reason that his friend was a bit distant yesterday might be because he is embarrassed by the others' decision to reject, which seemed to hit home. This morning DS has gone off with this chin held high and an awesome beard card for good luck to tackle this physics test. (He hates physics right now and is finding it tough, so this week was always going to be a trial.)

Scent armour is probably the right prescription. Elixir des Merveilles, perhaps. Warm, cosy spice, sandalwood, amber, balsalm, and a little citrus sparkle; it's my main comfort scent hug.

teta · 15/03/2018 08:47

Sock I’m so glad you and your Ds feel better today. I swear I feel my children’s heartbreak more than they do. And I’m especially protective of my boys. I expect my girls to be tougher - dont know why 🙄.
Sherbet fruity Lemon Fizz Of Calyx today. I’ve decided its spring and it’s piano-gate day.

LibertyBlue · 15/03/2018 09:14

Ah Sock that all sounds so upsetting and tricky to deal with. I remember that sort of thing happening as a teen, so common I think. Doesn’t make it any easier though.

SOTD is Chanel Bois de Iles. I’ve decided to get a FB with bday money when I fly to Ireland next (eek!) cause I love it so. Teta is the sample you kindly sent me a EDP or EDT? Don’t want to buy the wrong one! Will be flying from stansted - did someone say it’s worth preordering so you get samples and if so how do you do that please?

teta · 15/03/2018 09:19

It’s the pure perfume Liberty. Comes in a 15 ml bottle. I’m not sure how different the perfume is to the edp. Janetstwalker might be able to help you with that question.

LibertyBlue · 15/03/2018 09:53

Ooh that sounds expensive! How much was it please? Where did you purchase? You were very kind sending a sample- I thought it was a bigger botttle. Thank you teta.

positivepineapple · 15/03/2018 15:39

Popped into town to get some birthday cards and had a sniff of the new Coco Mademoiselle.

To me,
Top notes - exactly the same as original - I actually though she had picked up the wrong bottle.
Heart - this was lovely. Feels like a grown up up version. It's a lot richer and more rounded, their description of voluptuousness is fitting. I could really smell the patchouli and tonka - which I love, but faded away very quickly.
Base - smells exactly like the original, maybe the longevity is improved. It's still very much present on the back of my hand.

Nice enough but nothing to get excited about. Especially at Chanel prices.

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 15/03/2018 17:24

Ladies. Bloom was bliss! Spent over an hour smelling and chatting. Alla served me and was wonderful. Bought 12 samples Blush and have plan to return next month with DC (!) to get a FB of what I like most as birthday present to myself. So much lovely stuff but as you guys said, Zoologist line was really interesting. Loved Bat, civet, camel and rhinoceros. Such a world. I’m tempted to sign up to the nose club. Such bliss! Thanks so much for recommending

BigPuddleOfFloofyCatOnTheFloor · 15/03/2018 17:30

Sock I'm glad you feel a bit better. Could he perhaps look at any voluntary/overseas work, he might have more support than doing anything solo perhaps?

Oh pineapple I have been meaning to ask if anyone had tried the "new" Chanel one! I'm getting really exasperated with so many mainstream perfume houses just churning out flankers/spin offs/limited editions. No doubt I'll still try it when I'm near a counter though...Hmm

SOTD is the PP Black Orchid. Absolutely love this. No idea how close it is as haven't smelt the original but adore this for its own self!

PS The Aldi face mask is amazing, people. I have been looking very very tired and dull recently (probably because I actually am Grin), but this seems to have made my skin look a lot brighter with a bit of a glow Shock I can thoroughly recommend it. (I don't usually "do" skincare Blush but love face masks in the bath, preferably Korean/Japanese sheet ones. The DCs love them too, both girls and boys!) The Aldi one is very good.

UnnecessaryFennel · 15/03/2018 17:49

SOTE is You Or Someone LIke You by ELD'O. I felt as if I needed something a bit fresh and revitalising after a long teaching day, although I think this is probably best kept for a hot summer afternoon rather than a vaguely bright March evening. Lots of mint and green, with a note of unripe banana that I quite enjoy but am not sure if I really want to smell like (sorry poor grammar).

I think this will go into the same box as Sunshine and Pancakes and will hopefully come into its own later in the year. It's not yet quite warm enough for me to seriously consider moving away from incense, gourmand or chypre. That may be one of the most pretentious sentences I've ever written but hopefully you'll all know what I mean Grin

positivepineapple · 15/03/2018 18:11

Boots was quite ridiculous, the originals are hidden away while a million elixir's and essences are shoved down your throat, purely money spinners.

SOTAfternoon is Nox - Angela Ciampagna.
For the first 45 minutes it was strong lily and burning rubber, now I'm getting the salt and a fresh, citrusy note that I don't recognise. Maybe the hinoki?
