Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

I should add that I am 48, have had eye-bag issues which are improving lately with more water, less sugar and the Olay eye cream. Now would like to tackle hydration and lines in the eye area.

Pupsiecola · 19/03/2018 15:01

JDSTER was it Lean Habits?

SallieSallow · 19/03/2018 18:31

Sophie I watched and now follow this video about jade rolling, there are quite a few on YouTube but I like this lady so stuck with her Grin

m.youtube.com/watch?v=YXWZEYjVrSI

Miffy I love hylamide sub q for face bit didn't think the eye one did anything at all for me. I'm still on the lookout for a potent eye cream, I have one that gives good temporary results but still not found one that I like and is likely to make long term improvements. Verso is too pricey for me to risk (sensitive eyes) unless I can find samples.

I went to order the P&M HA from Qvc and it's on flipping waitlist Angry hopefully it will come back in stock, otherwise it's back to hylamide and hope Deciem don't implode.

Tsmummy08 · 19/03/2018 19:12

Sallie I've got the Verso eye cream - happy to send a sample if you'd like?

SallieSallow · 19/03/2018 19:32

Thank you TSmummy that is so lovely and kind of you Smile but it's expensive and I would feel awful using it up on you, especially as I kind of suspect that it may be irritating for me due to the retinol.

I've just seen there are some samples on eBay for a few pounds so might buy from there, but there's a space NK not far from me so I can go in and ask there too.

JDSTER · 19/03/2018 22:27

pupsie super sleuth- that was the one. I could vaguely remember the cover of the book as I’d obviously clicked through to Amazon to view it previously. I thought I’d just downloaded a sample but seems like I’ve inadvertently purchased it Grin.

SophieLion · 20/03/2018 06:56

Thanks Sallie. I had a watch yesterday and will try it later. Think I'll also have to give my roller a wash too Grin

mintmagnummm · 20/03/2018 07:54

Anyone else's skin really oily in the morn? What does that mean??

Tsmummy08 · 20/03/2018 08:27

Mint I wish! Mine's normally back to being Sahara-like!

Sallie no worries at all... great if you can get a sample from eBay/Space NK :)

SophieLion · 20/03/2018 09:06

Sallie, please let us know if you manage to get samples from Space NK. DH will be in London next week so I might ask him to pop in for some samples for me too.

SophieLion · 20/03/2018 11:30

Could it be sweat too Mint? Not trying to imply anything but remember Caroline Hirons writing how important it is to wash your face in the morning because we all sweat during the night.

mintmagnummm · 20/03/2018 12:07

It's possible I suppose Sophie. I always cleanse in morn anyway thankfully lol.

mintmagnummm · 20/03/2018 12:25

What's everyone's fave eyebrow pencil/liner? My love for the maybelline one is dying....

Pupsiecola · 20/03/2018 14:50

JDSTER it was the only other book I've read on mindset around food, after The Beck Diet Solution. It's a bit misleading because there are more than 4 habits. But some brilliant tips.

Tantpoke · 20/03/2018 15:12

Ok so advice please.

My face is a bit dry and slightly peeling from the retinol use which I have incidentally stopped using for the last few days (but still peeling never the less)

So should I now deal with the peeling by:

Using an acid toner to get rid of the dead layer of skin
a mild scrub exfoliator ( I have a mens clinique sample)
or just a cream for drier skin?

Mint my skin is usually always oily in the morning esp around my nose, I see this as perfectly normal for my combination skin and just cleanse as normal etc.

JDSTER · 20/03/2018 15:34

mint same as Tant my skin can be a bit oily in the morning My favoured morning cleanser is cosrx low ph good morning cleanser with a mild BHA so good for oily skin.

Tant I would/do exfoliate. Usually manually with a dry flannel or I might even stretch to using decleor phytopeel, which is the only thing I’ve got now closest to a scrub, and used only very occasionally now I hasten to add. My liquid exfoliator is BHA liquid which just dries me more when my skin has been peeling a bit from retinoid. I then follow up with a rich moisturiser. Bananafish was recommended Toleriane Riche by Dr Emma and I’ve purchased some based on that recommendation. It’s quite a small tube and I just use as required.

Tantpoke · 20/03/2018 16:35

jdster thanks the dry flannel suggestion is brilliant thanks, it worked really well. (so well in fact my black t shirt is covered in dead skin Grin

I'll use the sample mens clinique scrub I have later (wish I hadn't binned my alpha H scrub now)

I'll see what I have lying around moisturiser wise that's rich - I might use my Clarins Lotus oil actually, or I could use the EH moringa balm as a mask / moisturiser, might try that Hmm.

Oooo it would be the perfect time to use one of my scary looking hydrating sheet masks, decisions decisions.

mintmagnummm · 20/03/2018 17:02

Thanks tant and JDSTER, I'll accept it's normal for me then Smile

mintmagnummm · 20/03/2018 17:20

I may have ordered a balm cleanser to use as my first evening cleanse. 😬

JDSTER · 20/03/2018 19:28

Oh mint, you’re going to come back to us in a week or two saying your skin is not happy WinkGrin

Tantpoke · 20/03/2018 20:13

I use a balm cleanser when wearing heavy makeup but I do have to second cleanse quite thoroughly afterwards to avoid huge cystic spots under my chin.

Tantpoke · 20/03/2018 20:37

So after the dry flannel trick, I used the clinique scrub (my face hasn't felt that soft in ages) then my normal face wash followed by NIOD copper then NIOD MMHC then for some reason I applied the Rozex Rosacea cream I have, it stung a little but is full of emulsyfying wax (which put me off using it in the first place) but I feel nicely hydrated and smooth and all dry bits have gone for now. Yay.

miffy2 · 20/03/2018 20:41

Tant do you like the NIOD CAIS? I am looking into getting the new version when it comes out. Have been looking at reviews. Is it like an all-round anti-ageing serum? Where does it fit in your routine? Are you a Vit C/HA fan and if so where do you add in the copper?

mintmagnummm · 20/03/2018 21:21

You know me so well JDSTER 😂. You never know though, I may surprise you...

mintmagnummm · 20/03/2018 21:23

Oh and my skin isn't happy right now anyway! But I'm poorly again and on a second lot of antibiotics and having to take Piriton along side them as I'm allergic to antibiotics! Not sure the Piriton is helping though as the acne rash I get from the antis is making an appearance 😩
