Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

My skin is going through a good phase and I'm not sure why but I'll take it and run Grin though I think the PC BHA/differin combo was more irritating than I realised as my skin seems to have vastly improved since I ditched BHA.

I'm surprisingly not very oily in the morning, it's work that seems to trigger oiliness for me, I think it's the recycled air in the office - makes my eyes dry and my skin oily.

I just use moisturiser to combat retinol/differin dryness, along with the cicaplast gel for peeling skin on particularly bad areas (usually chin for me). BHA makes things worse for me (see above) and I stopped using physical exfoliants some time ago as found a lot of them irritating - including phytopeel, but decleor doesn't suit my skin at all.

In other exciting news I have got a few brow hairs starting to sprout thanks to rapidbrow Shock Not very many yet and they are sparse so look a bit odd, but I'm hopeful I'll get some more with continued use.

SallieSallow · 20/03/2018 21:53

I hope you feel better soon Mint Flowers

JDSTER · 20/03/2018 22:08

sallie I agree about work and recycled air making skin oilier. I’m barely through the door and I’m reaching for the blotting papers. Interestingly my chin is also the area that consistently peels more on my skin too (makes me sound like I have skin hanging off- I don’t!)
Congratulations on the brow hairs Grin

mint I hope you improve soon.

miffy Yes I like the NIOD Cais a lot but the results aren't instant like some products so you're never quite sure if it's actually doing anything, I like to think it is.

I apply straight after cleansing just after spraying my face with LRP thermal water and patting it off.

If I'm using my PC BHA then I wait 30 mins to apply like you are meant to.

I use the CAIS am and pm mainly because it has a shelf life and because there is so much in the bottle and I only use 6 - 7 drops for my whole face. I drop 6-7 drops into the palm of my hand, rub my palms together then pat all over my face. Then I apply my MMHC (which is HA) then whatever else I'm using ie lrp toleraine, retinol, etc

I do use Vit C and you can't use it with the CAIS in which case its VIt C am and Cais pm.
I've stopped using vit C because my face is all stingy from the retinol I was using every night.

Tantpoke · 20/03/2018 22:35

There was a young woman on the bus yesterday who got this out and slathered it all over her face even though it's a body butter which I found quite intriguing.

I've just applied some Clarins Lotus oil and it just feels lush and no stinging hurrah

Pupsiecola · 21/03/2018 09:01

Are you sure it wasn't Salted Caramel Ice Cream Tant? Grin

mintmagnummm · 21/03/2018 12:37

This morning I mixed one pump of my Vichy mineral 89 into my moisturiser then applied all at once, is there any reason I shouldn't do this? Because i liked doing it this way but obviously won't if there's a specific reason I'm not supposed to?? 🤔

Oh goodie us 'girls' Hmm haven't seen a bit of spam on these threads for quite a while. Consider yourself reported Mia.

Sorry I'm out of the loop as I had to figure out who to vote for and weigh all the complicated arguments of a referendum. Ugh, managed it all today though.

Also managed to finally see the Tiffany Masterson video with CH. Ehm that was interesting Confused was it just me or was CH very passively aggressive commenting on the Deciem situation? If I were younger or a drag queen I'd be using the term 'throwing a lot of shade'.

Hi botemp, long term lurker here but have learned a lot from this thread.

Since I work very close to a Muji, here's a pic of the cleansing oil INCI. Hope this helps.

Thank you safety Flowers

Hurray it's my favourite Sensitive skin series one! Will stock up next time in France or Germany Smile Did they just have the 200ml version or also the 400ml version?

OP posts:
safetyzone · 21/03/2018 13:57

Iirc 200ml is the only size.

Do you recommend other products in the range? I'm tempted by the high moisture toner but am going to Japan soon so might just buy Hada Labo instead.

Pupsiecola · 21/03/2018 14:07

Yes Bo I picked up on that too.

MustBeThin · 21/03/2018 17:59

Hi everyone! Cerave got back to me and this is what they've said.

Hi XXXX, Apologies it's taken us a while to get back to yourself, I was waiting for validation from our medical team. As we introduce CeraVe to new countries some of their regulations on packaging and labelling will vary, which explains the difference you note. We are pleased to confirm however that the level of ceramides is the same in all formulas, but listed in a different order. Rest assured, your cream will have the same skin benefit as the one you bought in the US. Hope you enjoy it!
Many thanks,
CeraVe

I think I also read that they are expanding the range later this month/early April. Wonder what they will add, I'm presuming the PM lotion will be released. Are you supposed to use that under a moisturiser or in place of one? My skin is pretty dry so not sure it'd be moisturising enough on its own for me.

JDSTER · 21/03/2018 18:01

I think it’s safe to say we won’t be trying Mukti skincare Grin

JDSTER · 21/03/2018 18:04

Thanks thin for sharing cerave response. PM lotion is fine on it’s own as a moisturiser. Perhaps if your skin is very dry it may not feel rich enough but it’s designed as a stand alone moisturiser. You could use a HA/hydrating serum underneath though.

SallieSallow · 21/03/2018 18:37

I didn't click on the link but googled Mukti and it does seem to be a genuine Australian organic/cruelty free brand (though not widely available here) but the tone of the post about it definitely seemed spammy/click baity.

Thank you for the cerave update Must I do hope they expand the range soon. I've used the PM lotion on it's own and found it was definitely moisturising enough for me, but there's this out in the US now so hopefully Boots will stock them both.

miffy2 · 21/03/2018 18:40

MustBeThin that is great news, and glad they responded! I use CeraVe as a moisturiser and I would consider myself to have normal to dry/dehydrated skin. I don't use it all the time, only for example over retinols at night (they are said to work together). It is quite moisturising, more so than it looks!

I got my Skin Actives order today; it arrived in Ireland 11 days ago so I was getting worried. The anti-oxidant booster comes with two separate droppers and they also sent a customised information sheet outlining all the different things I bought. Very impressed.

mint I am sure that it is OK to mix the 89 in with your cream; I often do this with Pestle & Mortar's HA.

On a hair note - my hair is thick and slightly wavy and just past my shoulders. I am in dire need of a cut and am quite fed up - resorting to tying it up most days which is not v flattering. Anyway I watched a hilarious video of one of my favourite, down-to-earth bloggers, and despite the hilarity her tip was so so good. You tie your hair up with a bobbin (NOT A PLASTIC ONE - see video as to why LOL) at the very top of your head and then use a curling wand. It is so easy as all your hair is up there and no need to struggle work your way round the back of your head. I did it in 5 mins after roughly blowdrying my hair. Well, I have never had to many compliments on my hair, even after salon visits!!! Also I have not had the urge to tie my hair up all day. I will be doing this again for sure. I will link the video below.

JDSTER · 21/03/2018 19:10

mint I think it’s better to apply them separately although I can’t honestly articulate the rationale for my thinking, I’m just sure it’s true Grin

miffy great little video. My hair’s not long enough to do that but looks like a great tip.

SallieSallow · 21/03/2018 19:29

I've curled my hair using that method before Miffy it is easy and gives nice curls but I only do it occasionally as my hair dislikes any kind of heat styling. I usually sleep in rag rollers if I want curls the next day, they last a lot longer for me than heat styled curls which turn frizzy on me if there's any moisture in the air.

Oops at the plastic bobble though! and I've never heard it called a bobbin before.

Tantpoke · 21/03/2018 21:55

I might try that with my babyliss curl thingy miffy

Bo yes I definitely noticed the comment towards Brandon, CH seemed very dissapointed in the way he's treated his loyal staff which is fair enough. I think she actually calls him a psychopath Grin

So the Muji oil is basically olive oil Confused

JDSTER · 21/03/2018 22:04

Tant I’m using DHC cleansing oil which is an olive oil based cleanser and it’s really good actually. I was a bit Confused to the thought of olive oil on my skin but it emulsifies really well and rinses away with absolutely no residue.

Tantpoke · 21/03/2018 23:23

The DHC oil has really good reviews, I'm tempted but scared to try it out. I might buy some when when my Balm cleansers run out.
