Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

safety, I haven't used much from the range as it's all really affordable but the shipping from Japan sort of cancels that out. The sheet masks are nice (basically the high moist toner in a sheet mask) and they have dry sheet masks and eye patches you can just add your fave HA lotion/toner to. I love their cottons as well, the organic little square ones.

Being nosey, what else are you planning on getting in Japan. The Canmake cream blushes are not to be missed, the mascaras (from various brands) are ace as well.

I'm half tempted to watch it again and see the psychopath comment tant. I'd forgotten that about CH, she's quite vocal about companies treating their staff well and equally from the bottom up to the top. I've always assumed she's lived that and had no power to retaliate at the time, and speaks up now where she can, so it makes sense from that perspective. Initially, I thought it was a bit of odd sucking up to TM. Likewise it was the reporting on how poorly the staff is/was treated and power structures that really consolidated my decision to no longer pay notice to or purchase any of the Deciem brand products.

All oil cleansers are basically planting oils with an emulsifier in them. Balm cleansers are the same except a wax or solid (at room temp) oil is added into the mix. I got the Muji originally as a more cost-effective alternative to DHC but ended up liking it better.

mint, sorry forgot to include you up there. You can mix it up however you prefer, there's no research AFAIK indicating that orders and how you apply skincare or favours one method over the other. I'm in JDSTER's camp where I like my layers applied separately, I suppose this makes us the freaks with plates with sections in them who don't want our food contaminating touching each other Grin

mintmagnummm · 22/03/2018 13:00

Thanks ladies I'll try mixing few more times and see which I prefer :-).

Bo not sure if you missed my spf question a while ago (or ur prob ignoring it as I'm doing ur head in lol)
Which out of the two avene ones I mentioned would u choose if u had to choose one?
I'm surprised you haven't shouted at me for ordering a balm cleanser 😂

mintmagnummm · 22/03/2018 13:01

Oh and your comment made me laugh as my 6 yr old son hates his foods mixed, everything has to be separate!

BagelGoesWalking · 22/03/2018 13:12

Safety zone I've heard the Mekiba Moist Lotion Toner is very good and is in a huge £500 ml bottle for about £19 on eBay so hopefully would be cheaper in Japan.

MustbeThin thank you for the CeraVe info, good to know.

Muddy my daughter did the ponytail curling thing last w/e and it looked really good! Much better than trying to do the whole length and much quicker too. She was impressed Smile

botemp · 22/03/2018 13:12

*Just don't mix SPF with anything.

Ah right, mineral vs chemical sunscreens is like comparing apples to oranges. I would say stick with what you know, mineral does come with the risk of increasing blackheads.

OP posts:
mintmagnummm · 22/03/2018 13:28

Bo it's ok I never mix spf as I know it's reduces the protection, I always apply it last. Oh ok thank you, I was considering trying the mineral one but as I am prone to blackheads with the wrong products I think I'll definitely stick to my anti ageing one, it hasn't given me any issues.

JDSTER · 22/03/2018 13:33

Don’t be scared of the DHC Tant. Amazon sell two small bottles as a set. That’s how I tried it. I was then delighted to get a full size free with my £6 subscription to Red magazine

Did Bo refer to me as a freak HmmGrin? I hadn’t appreciated mineral spf can increase blackheads.

botemp · 22/03/2018 13:41

Sorry JDSTER Grin at least I didn't call you a girl

Yeah mineral can be a bit clogging, especially the non-nano formulations. A thick layer of zinc oxide is essentially like a heavy occlusive layer. Also, they require a bit more work to clean off properly. It shouldn't impact someone with a fully built up anti-acne routine too much as there's usually a thorough cleanser and BHA/retinoids in the mix but a traditional greasy sunscreen is not something that demographic leans towards anyhow.

I had a voucher to use in Boots and ordered the above. I've used the retinol and vitamin C serum before and liked them and the 3rd off persuaded me. I'm doubting my purchase now for some reason, but that's me second guessing myself always!
I also meant to get A LRP sunscreen and Cerave moisturiser and managed to forget them but I'll get them when I collect my order.
I find with TO retinol in squalene it goes on nice because of the oil but I feel it's too rich to apply more products on top and that the oil will act like a barrier.
Also I found the indeed surface reface gave the appearance of instant results and I now need this more than ever as I'm losing weight and my face is thinner and wrinkles are deeperShock

Lonesurvivor · 22/03/2018 17:55

miffy I'm going to try that curling method at the weekend, it looks easy enough for me to even manage it!
I think you and someone else mentioned killing Deciem hand chemistry creams and wondering about boots continuing them. Well today in our local Boots they were on clearance. The more expensive one (pink box) was €10 and the other (green box) €2.50 I picked up two of them they'll be handy token gifts.
I wonder is it just been stopped in our local Boots or if there could indeed be more to it.

mintmagnummm · 22/03/2018 18:41

Lone watch out for the hydraluron serum as that was awful on my skin, you may be fine though.

Lonesurvivor · 22/03/2018 18:45

Thanks mint what did it do to your skin?
I actually really liked TO HA, found it plumped out my skin nicely but didn't like how my skin felt to touch after I put it on if that makes sense, it felt dry and tacky. I'll Google some reviews and if they're not good overall I'll return.

SallieSallow · 22/03/2018 18:59

Lone there has been no Hand Chemistry in my regular Boots for months now, and they stopped selling the hylamide range well before that so think that's the end of Deciem brands being sold in Boots - or indeed anywhere other than their own shops and website as far as I can tell.

I'd really like to ditch them as a brand but I love the hand chemistry hand cream and also the hyaluronic acid body spray, as well as hylamide sub q serum. I'm looking for alternatives but have not found anything I like as much yet.

I used DHC cleansing oil in the past and it gave me spots but that was back in the days before I knew about doing a second cleanse Blush I'm quite liking the una Brennan one, it smells very strong though - a bit like fairy liquid! But it works well and I've not had any adverse reactions.

mintmagnummm · 22/03/2018 19:34

Lone it actually made my skin feel more dehydrated and it felt a little tacky.

Sallie I really like the Vichy mineral 89 ha serum so maybe give that a go? I also used to use and really like the hylamide subq serum so maybe u will like the Vichy too.

Lonesurvivor · 22/03/2018 19:55

mint that's how my skin felt using TO HA, it didn't last once I put on the rest of my skin care though. Maybe that's how HA on it's own feels on skin?
salli our local Boots cleared all their Indeed and Hylamid range last year. I was lucky enough to get lots on clearance using my points. I really liked the sub q too but have it all used up now and was hoping to find an affordable similar replacement, must admit I'm still tempted to try TO Buffet.
I looked on Boots Ireland and Hylamid is no longer available. Hand chemistry still is but it must be a matter of time so.
Indeed retinol surface re face was out of stock for a long time on line but the link and info were still up. This is the second month running both Indeed and Super facialists have been on a third off in Boots, this wouldn't be usual. The only needs I've noticed occasionally before was 3 for 2.

SallieSallow · 22/03/2018 19:57

Mint that one does look good, I got a bit put off Vichy as didn't really like their Vit c serum but I love the thermal water spray. What is the texture like, is it watery/non-sticky? I'm on waitlist for a pestle and mortar HA from Qvc but if it doesn't come back in stock soon I might try the Vichy one.

SallieSallow · 22/03/2018 20:00

Lone I got some good hylamide bargains in Boots too, the sub q was half price at one point so I stocked up. I'm only coming to the end of it now hence looking for a new HA - the Vichy one Mint has mentioned sounds like a good option.

MrsDOnofrio · 22/03/2018 20:23

Sallie I’m also using the Vichy Mineral 89. I much prefer it to the TO HA. It’s quite a watery gel, goes onto the skin nicely and doesn’t feel as tacky as the TO. I started using the Vichy vit C serum last week, the first vit C I’ve used. What didn’t you like about it and have you found one you like? I’m not finding it too bad to use but not convinced it’s doing much either, not really sure how I’m meant to tell.

SallieSallow · 22/03/2018 21:17

I'm really tempted by the Vichy 89 now, I definitely want a watery gel.

MrsD I didn't like the Vichy Vit c as found it a bit sticky/tacky and it made me itchy. My skin isn't very tolerant to Vit c though, and I didn't realise the Vichy one had such a short shelf life & it might have gone off as I didn't keep it in the fridge. I'm using an active formulas vit c at the moment and no itchiness but same as you I'm not convinced it's doing much, I haven't been using it that long though.

mintmagnummm · 22/03/2018 21:18

Sallie it's a water based gel texture and it has good slip, once it's absorbed there's no trace at all, no stickiness, tackiness etc. I've actually been adding 1 pump into my moisturiser in my palm then mixing and then massaging into my skin.

mintmagnummm · 22/03/2018 21:20

Lone ha definitely does need a moisturiser on top it should never be used alone but even with my other products on top the hydraluron dehydrated my skin more

EnidButton · 22/03/2018 21:43

Our big Boots still has hand chemistry hand cream in at full price or on a normal offer. I'll keep an eye on it now. Definitely stocking up if it goes in clearance.

Nothing to report except my skin seems to be behaving itself spots wise. I haven't eaten wheat for 4-5 weeks. It's made such a difference.

Really love the Elemis papaya mask. My skin really gleams after using it. Might not do anything long lasting but as manual and acid exfoliation consistently break my chin out, this is a gentle way I can do some exfoliating. Other than with the flannels.

My fringe is still getting on my nips. Waiting for it to grow so I can try elsewhere or ask for an adjustment.

That's it. a woman in the supermarket I trapped my finger in a basket today. There's a lovely deep purple blood blister on my perfectly groomed finger. Ruining the look. Grin I thought it was broken at first though so...

Hope you are all well. Clocks go forward soon. 🌈🌱🌷

safetyzone · 22/03/2018 21:45

Bo, I'm planning to buy the heroine make eyeliner, rose of Versailles mascara, hada labo hakujyun premium toner, and a spf powder for touch up. Oh and ettusai sunscreen. Not looked at canmake for ages but will check it out.
