Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

A Damaged Skin Barrier - Now What?

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Wow the L'occitaine ultra rich lotion is lush, I rarely use body lotion because I find it too sticky, this stuff is creamy and sinks in beautifully and smells lovely, my skin feels so silky soft, yay.

Tantpoke · 20/02/2018 21:31
  • retinoid pm only
userallusedup · 20/02/2018 21:56

Your hair sounds lovely and easy Tant though I suppose one good thing about mine is it doesn't need washing often, in fact it behaves/looks much better when it's not freshly washed. L'occitane have some lovely shower gels and body lotions, unfortunately they make me itchy Sad

And I have a question - has anyone ever used a facial self tanner? I've found an unopened bottle of hylamide glow booster in my stash, I don't even remember buying it Blush and wasn't sure what it was, but on closer inspection it seems to be a self tan. If you have used/do use one how do you fit it into your routine? Or are they bad for your skin and not recommended? I'm wondering if I should try it to see if it would make me look a bit more healthy and less sallow, it says it gives a 'glow' rather than a tan.

And second question has anyone used a wash off fake tan on their body (sort of like waterproof body makeup I suppose)? I don't want to look really tanned (or orange!) but again wondering if there's anything out there that would tone down my yellowness and give me a bit of a healthy glow.

Tantpoke · 20/02/2018 23:01

Thanks user its easy hair but a PITA re washing all the time.

user my guess with the hylamide glow booster is that its quite a thin consistency so you can still apply normal skin care before and after.

'Apply twice daily as adjunct skincare to offer radiance and a golden glow. Can be used as part of any skincare regimen before the application of moisturizers and/or makeup. Ideally used after application of Hylamide SubQ Anti-Age and SubQ Eyes'

As for the body I use the garnier summer body in dark which for me gives a lovely natural glow.

Tantpoke · 20/02/2018 23:12

user I've just noticed that you use the hylamide sub q in the pm anyway so just apply it over that one night and see what magic occurs by the next morning Smile

EnidButton · 21/02/2018 00:10

Yong! Your current lovely hair colour is the hair colour I want! The swatch looks more like what I sometimes end up with. Just a word of warning, the red is hard to fully get rid of once it's there. (That might just be my annoying hair though.)

EnidButton · 21/02/2018 00:13

User I've used the St Tropez temporary body one. Washes off with soap and water. Very subtle, not orange. Fairly easy to put on without streaks although it's still a bit tricky around elbows and ankles. It's a cream so you rub it on with a mitt. I didn't use it last summer at all but I'm assuming they still do it.

Ollivander84 · 21/02/2018 00:41

Yong - just for your entertainment. I took the horse out for a v short hack with a friends youngster. Mine tried to boot the youngster, did passage all down the lane, scared herself at the sight of another horse, backed into a bush, refused to go forward and half reared. A woman offered us a lead from her horse
Mine is 24 HmmBlushGrin and in deep shit now

mintmagnummm · 21/02/2018 06:45

User what's that fab ultra repair cream like? That's one I was considering a long time ago for pm use. Do you use it every night? It says for very dry skin etc which worries me

Tantpoke · 21/02/2018 10:54

Not sure why its taken me this long to purchase but my LRP toleraine cleanser arrived and it really is lovely and seems to suit my skin so far, fingers crossed.
My LRP thermal spray also arrived and it is perfect as a toner after the cleanser as I'm not fond of the residue from milky cleansers hence my hesitation in buying.
My skin just feels like healthy clean skin ready for my routine.

I'm going to try out my Niod photography fluid which was in the same box as my niod stuff because like user its just hanging around like your self tan stuff so I might as well try it out.

Ollivander84 · 21/02/2018 11:04

Tant - don't forget easy para pharmacie for bulk buy if you like the cleanser! Usually much cheaper

Tantpoke · 21/02/2018 11:09

Mmm the niod photography fluid 12% is very thick, strange stuff really but seems to magically make my skin look better somehow.

I'll see how I get on with it throughout the day without any make up on, off to see the dentist in a bit as I've have the worst toothache ever the last 24 hours, on top of a chesty cough, peeing my pants and insomnia. woo hoo lucky me Grin

Tantpoke · 21/02/2018 11:12

Ooo Olli thanks that's so good to know because I think its a keeper. I bulk buy the lrp toleraine fluide in sales (I have 4 bottles unopened) and I used to bulk buy the LRP cleanser they discontinued (the one in a pump bottle)

Ollivander84 · 21/02/2018 11:21

Out of stock but I usually get this one
https://www.easyparapharmacie.co.uk/la-roche-posay-toleriane-fluide-dermo-nettoyant-visage-et-yeux-2x400ml.html

botemp · 21/02/2018 11:50

Ahem, just be cautious with bulk buying LRP Toleriane as it's got no preservatives and has to be used up within 6 months. I can tell from you experience that a few days over that 6-month mark it does indeed go off. As long as it's sealed up properly you should be okay but I'm not sure the pump ones are hermetically sealed.

I remember answering the fake tanning face question before. Two reasons why I wouldn't bother, it affects the pH level of your skin (though the Hylamide may use a newer gen self-tanner that doesn't, I'd have to look it up). The other part of the equation of why I don't, is if using AHAs, Retinol, Vit C, etc, you're putting your cell turnover in turbo drive so most likely the tan will fade quicker and possibly do it in a less uniform way. I use a gel bronzer (Sisley matte but there's others out there, I like this as it has no glitter) to perk my face up when I want to, which is subtle enough without looking fake.

For the body I like Vita Liberata Body Blur which is pretty much like makeup but it doesn't transfer and is a lot less hassle than actual fake tanning for me. I use it more to even out skin tone (I collect a lot of bruises through cycling) and have a bit of the KP dilated pores look on the legs and upper arms which it covers up nicely with a healthy glow, but you can get darker colours to give a more bronzed look.

If we're doing a routine roll call, here's mine, very dull at the moment but aside from adding a retinol (face) type product I don't see me changing much anytime soon:

AM

Rinse with tepid water (I'll get back to cleanser come spring/summer, it's just too drying now)

Vichy Thermal Spray a rampant adulterer going by this thread, the bastard

Liftactiv Vitamin C Skin Brightening Skin Corrector (seems to be the US/UK name)

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Toner (used as a very light moisturising/hydrating layer)

Bioderma Cicabio SPF50+

PM

Edenens Milky Cleansing Oil

LRP Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser (still very much impressed with this new version) or Avene Extremely Gentle Cleanser if second cleansing.

Vichy Thermal Spray

Verso Super Eye Serum (when not using P50)

OR

Biologique Recherche P50 (2-3x a week)

TO Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3% (using it up, not really seeing it do anything special)

LRP Toleriane Ultra Nuit (Very happy with this, especially after the last moisturiser disaster, it's a keeper)

Oh thanks enid it's my natural colour so I find it a bit dull! Grin yeah I was thinking if it's just the ends, at least the colour can just be cut off at some point....I'm a bit cavalier about these things...I do actually have a red tint to my hair in sunlight anyway surprisingly consider its so dark (Celtic/Asian genes). That's why my hairdresser was suggesting it I think.
user I resort to a bit of gradual fake tan at this time of year too..I like st tropez and they also do a wash off version which is ok. I do find since I use daily Year-round spf 50 I stay quite pale so need a bit of colour. Have also tried garnier thing.
olli gah, horses are such tedious creatures at times aren't they? Naughty senior mare! Is she a bit Alfa? Mine is terrible, she rules the geldings with an iron rod...must get her out tomorrow....let's just say she coming out if winter still looking a little too well for my liking....
I'm stalking the Toleriane bulk deal on easypara p too....

SophieLion · 21/02/2018 12:07

Thanks Botemp for the info on the products SH suggested. She also recommended a Superdrug range for dehydrated skin but I thought it would be impossible for me to get hold of here (SH said it was hard to find even in the UK) but perhaps the range is online now** given you say the video is quite old.

As I’m going through the threads I’m making a list of all actives (and what they do!) as well as products I think might be good for my skin so any info any of you give me is most appreciated. Thank you.

I’m not looking to change my moisturiser now as want to try out new products one by one but perhaps in the future.... as for the body lotion, generally I’m fine with something cheap and cheerful like Palmers Cocoa Butter or Nivea or Dove. It’s just on my chest that I get some spots and so I was thinking perhaps to eliminate MOs there. Noted that the Eucerin is more for eczema prone skin.

Good luck with the hair appointment!

JDSTER - re NIOD MMHA, is this Deciem NIOD multi-molecular hyaluronic complex? Do you get on well with it? Think I saw someone else using it in their routine too.

Ollivander84 · 21/02/2018 12:09

Botemp - thanks! I tend to just buy the duo and that does me under 6 months so should be fine

Yong - yes! Incredibly strong willed

yongnian · 21/02/2018 12:24

Oh and seeing as we're posting routines I shall do mine, though not many changes I think...

AM
Thermal water spray
LRP Toleriane
Rosewater toner
Egyptian Magic as eye treatment for dermatitis and general
TO vit c and Reservatrol on scars
TO HA
TO moisturiser
Bioderma photoderm SPF 50

PM
Bioderma crealine to remove make up
Rice Bran oil as second cleanse
Rosewater toner
EMC on eyes again
TO Buffet in creases
TO Niacinamide
EMC as night cream

Will sometimes also do a run of three days of A313 on scars or if any acne
Also LRP effaclar duo if any spots

Ollivander84 · 21/02/2018 12:48

Ridiculously simple routine now!

am
Cleanse boots botanics lotion
Kiku long name hydrating lotion stuff
Nip/fab kale fix moisturiser

Pm
Eye makeup off with remover
LRP cleanser and flannel
Rosewater for excess cleanser
Figs and rouge moisturiser

I use REN omega 3 serum in the evening if dry or a HA serum in the am

EnidButton · 21/02/2018 14:30

Talking of LRP toleriane fluide, my newly bought one smells different to the previous ones. It has a plasticky kind of smell. Is that normal? Previous ones didn't smell of anything.

Tantpoke · 21/02/2018 15:32

Olli thats exactly what I have but no pump just flip top lid.

Bo Shock at 6 month life span, I hope my toleraine fluide will be ok, it seems to last me ages. I only stocked up because it seemed like they were going to discontinue a while back.

I know Dr Sam stockpiled a load of the old LRP cleanser / wash stuff (now sadly discontinued) in a pump and seemed to be ok wth that.

Grin rampant adulterer - tis the truth

I have infected gums, never been in so much pain apart from tonsillitis - at least with a tooth they can pull the bugger out FFS

yong you have gorgeous thick glossy hair of which I am very envious, lovely colour as it is

I'm liking the routines just using Thermal water spray as a morning cleanse, I can happily do that, would make life a lot easier.

Very bloody useful these routine updates - thanks lovely ladies

Tantpoke · 21/02/2018 15:58

yong user et al

Here is a pic of my annoyingly flat, limp hair Grin

🐌 Fantastic Skincare: Hairmageddon looms...

Oo poor you tant that sounds very nasty! Hope you've got Meds and they start working v soon,....and your hair is a beautiful colour and not at limp as far as I can tell!!!!

Tantpoke · 21/02/2018 16:12

thanks yong Smile Yes the dentist gave me antibiotics and the Doctor gave me pain killers and I also bought some Dentinox teething gel Grin which does actually work a bit from the chemist.

I've had a very productive day in that respect Hmm
My roots are very greasy though already from washing only yesterday which the pic doesnt show and the back of my head is super flat.
