Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

FEBRUARY 2018: The month of February sucks. Period. We’re sick of winter and the state of our finances, some are embracing frugality (in different shapes and forms) but water bills and car maintenance are ruining our buzz. Hair appointments need to be made despite the palpitations of fear that the mere thought incites. Oh, and skin texture. As you were...

Rose of Versailles is an amazing name for a mascara.

Lonesurvivor · 22/03/2018 22:19

mint I always used moisturiser on top of the HA and my skin felt fine after that. It must be the initial application or the fluid itself that causes that tacky feeling.

miffy2 · 22/03/2018 23:14

I am another fan of Vichy 89 - I use it for a few weeks and then switch to Pestle & Mortar as I love them both :) Have my mum using it too, she uses it am and pm and is really happy with how her skin feels.

Lone - I am going to have to track down a couple of Hand Chemistry Pro Repair tubes in Boots as I too have been converted- I will be heading to a big branch on Saturday so fingers crossed.

Sallie I got a bottle of the HA spray on your recommendation as the gel I use is almost gone. Very nice. Not moisturising enough for me this time of year as I love a good body butter but I think it will be great for summer.

I was very tempted to pick up another pot of Clinique TTDO balm and a Moisture Surge mask as my Boots had the GWP offer on, but when I went this afternoon they told me they had run out of most of the items in the GWP (it was a choose 6 from 8 scenario) and I didn't like what was left so I kept my money in my hand and will hang on for the next one :)

EnidButton · 23/03/2018 03:39

They might have been discussed before but has anyone tried the Bliss moisturising socks or gloves? They look good but they're not cheap so thought I'd ask first.

m.lookfantastic.com/bliss-softening-socks-50-treatments/10437886.html?affil=thggpsad&switchcurrency=GBP&shippingcountry=GB&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxsWEjMKB2gIVT77tCh2l4wr_EAQYASABEgJOL_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CILXx5TCgdoCFce1UQodrXAAVg

More the socks than the gloves. My feet are still great after the Footner but wanted something to maintain them. I find cream on my feet doesn't do that much or gets wiped off easily.

SophieLion · 23/03/2018 07:58

Hi Enid, I haven't used those Bliss socks or gloves but I often put Flexitol on my feet at bedtime, put a pair of socks on straightaway and then sleep like that (obviously can't do that when the weather gets warm). I find it works quite well.

Hi Sallie, like MrsD, I'm also using the Vichy Mineral 89 (and the Vichy Vit C). The dehydration lines around my eyes have definitely improved but I can't say whether that's due to the Mineral 89 or changing cleanser and method of cleansing (or both!). Not used an HA before.

MrsD - like you I've only just started with the Vichy Vit C. Only used it twice as trying to introduce it slowly. After the first time I a few spots popped up on the right side of my forehead and my skin felt a bit tight towards the end of the day. Didn't feel a tingle when I put it on. Used it for a second time a few days later: didn't get any more spots so perhaps it was a coincidence? Next week will up my use to 3 times a week then every other day. I think you need to wait a before assessing results (I don't notice anything either at the moment Grin).

My skin is looking rubbish again as, of course, I messed with one of the spots on my forehead - just as all the other spots had healed up SadSad

There is a aesthetician here who I know does a facial where she injects HA just under the surface of the skin. Apparently it hydrates for a few months. What do you all think of this?

EnidButton · 23/03/2018 10:38

I heard about that Sophie. Don't know anything about it but I thought it sounded interesting too.
I usually do that with foot cream, including flexitol, but it feels like the socks soak it all up before it does anything much. Maybe I use too much. I'll try it tonight, thanks.

mintmagnummm · 23/03/2018 11:11

Just to let you know Vichy has 25% off in boots at mo. I just got some more spray and mineral 89

botemp · 23/03/2018 11:18

Ouch Enid, hope the finger heals soon!

The Rose de Versailles Mascara is also wonderfully kitsch in its packaging. It's such a contradiction to all the supposed Japanese minimalism. In the same vein, even though I find it rather hideous and it is ludicrously priced, I've always been fascinated by the Laduree blush that's in rose petals. Do provide us with some shelf porn, please, safety. Just keep the tentacle porn to yourself.

The mote liner in black brown is also excellent, it's a bit pricier for a drugstore buy but it's well worth getting.

Enid, I nearly bought those bliss gloves and socks at TKMaxx but I was kind of grossed out by the idea as it's bound to get moist in there. I think it's comparable to a paraffin bath treatment, softens hands nicely for a bit. Didn't realise they were so expensive though, think it was 5 or 10 euros at TKMaxx at the time.

Sophie, I've only heard of HA (and possibly some antiosidants) injected as a treatment for hydration as an injectable treatment. Think it's even made by the same people as Botox. I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be getting those type of injections by someone who isn't medically trained. I'm not sure how well it works though.

Clocking back on before I fall off completely and miss the new thread....
Skin is frankly hammered by all the lurgies (tonsillitis gave way to ear and sinus infection). It is strangely dried out by it all, even flaky in places and some odd tiny blackheads and a white milia has emerged on my cheek.
So, in serious need of TLC now.
That hair curling tip looks a good one

EnidButton · 23/03/2018 16:51

bo TK Max is a good call. I might have seen some in there years ago so there's a chance they will appear again. I'll keep looking. I do like the idea of them. Zero effort required.

Bought lots of lovely treats for Easter yesterday. All gluten free but my no sugar resolve is ruined. Finger is fine. Looks like I smudged my nail polish as it's the same colour. Hmm

Are we approaching a new thread?

EnidButton · 23/03/2018 16:52

Talking of Easter has anyone seen any of the beauty Easter eggs? The Look Fantastic one looked good. Think it's sold out now.

Tantpoke · 23/03/2018 17:22

Thanks Enid you just reminded me to pop some Easter eggs onto my shop. I hope your finger is better.

Now that my skin is dry and flaky after strong retinol use I can use products I was having to stay away from with my combination skin that got quite angry and red at times.

I'm finding my Clarins Lotus oil is a go to skin saver at the moment as it works well on top of my NIOD products.

I've ordered LRP cicaplast because I really need it on certain areas.

Tsmummy08 · 23/03/2018 18:50

Blimey, this thread has sped along!

I'm another happy Vichy Mineral 89 user - I find it a little sticky but moisturiser goes straight on top so, doesn't really matter. If the DE hydrating gel was more easily available, I'd go for that, but in the meantime...

I wanted to do a round-up of some products I've tried recently but have been busy with work, work-outs and puppy. So, briefly:

Tried Hydrabio - I really thought this would be perfect for me but I can't use it as everything I put on top peels off. And I'm pretty sure it gave me little spots. Both due to silicones high up the ingredient list - I seem to be fine with them in makeup or further down the INCI but this one was a nope. Does anyone want it?

Cicabio - wanted to love this one too but it peels/rolls off. I'll keep it for exercise/going to the gym when it will do as a quick morning SPF.

Bioderma Photoderm Aquafluide SPF50 - another one that rolled off my skin and felt quite heavy. Like the LRP Anthelios ones.

I'm still on the lookout for an effective SPF for sunnier weather (that WILL be coming soon I hope) that isn't mineral based and doesn't contain loads of silicones....

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream - nice, no peeling/rolling but there's something in it (eucalyptus oil?) that's irritating my skin when first applied (probably due to sensitivity from Retin-A use). So it's back to my beloved Ceramidin cream. I wanted to find something a little cheaper and more easily available but just as lovely and rich - still looking!

Sorry to hear your fringe is getting on your nips Enid Grin. I’ve had those bliss gloves before. A friend got me them for Christmas a lot of years ago now so I’ve since chucked them. They’re good in that they work by leaving you hands very smooth after use,but there was something a bit weird about putting your hands in cold jelly like gloves.

Tsmummy I’d like to try that spf if you don’t mind. Bioderma’s been on my to try list.

Talking of Easter eggs I went to an egg decorating session last night with a friend. A local chocolatier was hosting it. My design was pretty rubbish but I’m sure the children will happily scoff it Smile

miffy2 · 23/03/2018 20:57

I received a few things in the post this week - my Skin Actives delivery which I outlined above and which I have just started using.

From Cult Beauty I got Briogeo shampoo and mask - my Living Proof mask finished ages ago and I need one for weekly use. I also got a bottle of TO marula oil, which seems to be sold out everywhere else and is the first TO product I have bought in ages, and a tube of Sol de Janeiro hand cream - I love this fragrance and it makes me hopeful for spring!
