Welcome to the long running perfume thread. Discuss Scent of the Day, fave dupes and scents of ALL price brackets. You don’t have to spend a fortune and we will encourage you to get a sample first. That said, hiding your credit card in the freezer is recommended.

Old thread

We also have managed to get a 20% discount on a Perfume Society box and are discussing it on The Big Sniff.

SOTD was 4160 New York, that I dug out of another box I had stashed and forgotten about. God I’m a fragrance hoarder!

I came home to another PS Latest Launches box as well. So far they have sent me 3 boxes after I paid for 1. I’m not complaining though, I bloody love the MH and E Coudray.

I need to go stick my nose in something comforting. I’ve made a horrible mistake, I think: leaving a 10 year teaching career to become an administrator. The office is weird and I’m being micro-managed to death. Ah well, just have to suck it up until something else comes up.

MrsGruber · 30/01/2018 21:47

Evening All - think 4160s generally have a pleasingly light hand with the oud - and combiing it with fruits is their special talent. I know they don't list it in Midnight in the Palace Garden (just a generic 'woody notes'), but there must be some agarwood in there?

Topically enough, there's nothing obviously responsible for the stench at the edge of The Dark Heart in the listed notes. Smells quite barnyardy to me and suggests a bigger, rougher hairier oud in the mix? Whatever it is, it does successfully provides that hint of something disturbing Sarah McCartney describes in the perfume's backstory?

Guerlain's Santal Royal is a beautiful, rich, smooth spiced rose oud - next time you pass a counter please try it if you are unfamiliar, especially if you like big amber beauties like Coromandel. Smile

When you see oud listed it is difficult to know what to expect. 4160's bottle of agarwood smelt gentle, balanced and balsamic. But there are clearly some rip-roaring stinky animal ouds out there too. Is this all about natural variance? Are we also sniffing a lot of synthetic ouds that also vary a lot?

Calmwhoknows · 30/01/2018 22:11

Bluebell, yes feel free to pass the love samples on! The mystery sample, btw, is Madonna’s Truth or Dare Naked, mentioned on the Big Sniff thread.

I love Oud Satin Mood and I have a 5ml sample which is lasting a long time as it is so strong.

BluebellGal · 30/01/2018 22:35

Calm oh really? I’ve been reading about TOD naked and wondering if I’d like it - thank you so much for passing on the love- I haven’t tried it on skin yet, but on first sniff it’s good stuff.

5ml of Oud Satin Mood would last me yearsGrin. I’m still eeking out my sample and I’ve had it nearly a year. I only wear for evenings out and one spray on the neck is enough. It’s a room filler of a fragrance. Less is most definitely more. I love it, lots of rose, vanilla and violet - and a fantastic treatment of oud. Definitely no shitty nappies here.

MrsGruber · 30/01/2018 23:25

I bet I could Bluebell - I love some of those notes. I could defo talk about frankincense and civet for an hour Grin

Talking of frankincense I have succumbed (again) to the 4160 sale. I really rate OML Blue - it is really beautiful, in an expansive and disinterested sort of way, and has great staying power for something made only with naturals.

mrsreynolds · 31/01/2018 07:25

I'm not an oud fan
But frankincense and civet!? Yes please!!
It's raining here and I have an unexpected free day...hmmm
What to do...
Sotd to be decided

SoFancy · 31/01/2018 11:10

Thanks for all your Oud opinions, peeps.

PIAM - overripe melons/old nappies made me laugh Grin. I get a bleachy/chlorine smell from Oud sometimes which I seem to be alone in.

Mrs Gruber Santal Royal sounds divine....

MrsR - I'm a bit scared of too much civet. I'll take it in some of the old 80s powerhouses (ET Passion springs to mind), but anything approaching 'skank' makes me nervous Grin.

Bluebell I love Inevitable Crimes of Passion and Captured By Candlelight. The latter was my Christmas fragrance this year. I hammered two little samples of it. So juicy and boozy and yum. Inevitable Crimes has two really distinct stages for me - extremely boozy pineapple cocktail followed by Terry's chocolate orange. Husband hated it on me, but its on my ever expanding 4160 full bottle worthy list for when I win Euromillions

I'm boring myself in Burberry Women again today. I've been very indecisive about my SOTD recently. I think its the grey, crappy weather. I might need to wear something loud and challenging tomorrow and scare my colleagues just for fun Wink

mrsreynolds · 31/01/2018 11:21

Oh passion is divine 😁

I got my FB of sexiest scent today and a sample of mother nature naughty daughters (I asked for tarts knocked drawer but never mind)

MNND is rather nice actually.
A jammy rose and fruit that dries down to a woody base

Pleasant. It really reminds me of something though....

mrsreynolds · 31/01/2018 11:22

....FM lipstick rose! That's what's it like! Very similar imo

mrsreynolds · 31/01/2018 11:23

...and I no longer have a free day
Got called into work
Boo

Frankiewears · 31/01/2018 11:35

Today I am wearing Sikkim Girls by Lush. One of those ones where you have to keep sniffing yourself.

I recently bought a perfume which is doubtless a dupe for a mainstream one and I like it so would like to get the ‘real’ version if possible. Does anyone know which perfume has the following:

Top notes- orange blossom, ylang and bergamot
Mid notes- patchouli
Basenote- Amber

MrsPestilence · 31/01/2018 12:02

Frankie you can search by note, it will narrow the field.

MrsR getting called into work will probably save you a fortune.

SoF hide the Burberry and wear something different tomorrow.

SotD is Venustas ' Copal Azure, mmm incense.

Elsie have you checked your bank balance to check that they are not really taking money? Seems rather generous of them Grin

SOTD is 4160 Centrepiece- should have gone for New York 55 as planned. This is not good on me. It smells of TCP and carpet & pet shops? I’ve read the reviews and it seems like they bottled a completely different perfume- is this possible??! I don’t get it. But going to stick with it as it seems 4160 need several outings before you ‘get them’

Fancy I don’t get pineapple, grapefruit or terrys chocolate orange from inevitable crimes of passion... just mushrooms and a more pleasant woody base. I can’t do mushrooms in perfume, so I’m giving up on this one now.

I’m addicted to several 4160 now which I really didn’t like to start with! They grow on you, then become a little bit addictive I find. Very strange. Never had this before with a perfume house. Sarah Macartney seems to have special powers!

Frankiewears · 31/01/2018 12:27

Perfect! Thank-you MrsP -it does smell like the Hermès one!

SoFancy · 31/01/2018 12:54

Cant say I got mushrooms from Inevitable Crimes, but if you do, Bluebell, I don't blame you for binning it off Grin.

Know what you mean about the ddictive quality of 4160 perfumes. They are weird little growers that plant a seed and then before you know it, you cant stop thinking about them. This has happened to me with a fair few of their perfumes. I once spent an entire holiday craving Midnight in the Palace Garden after using up a sample in two days. I was a woman obsessed.

BluebellGal · 31/01/2018 12:58

Grin sofancy a woman obsessed with a 4160 Perfume?! That’s probably half of the thread right now. I’m currently addicted to Silk Lace and Chocolate of an evening and hatching a plan to get me a FB when I really have zero budge for Perfume in Feb

BluebellGal · 31/01/2018 13:01

4160s are like crack for perfumistas! I think the reason they’re harder to love is that the blends can be so unusual... but that also makes you crave a 4160 more because you don’t have anything else which is like it in your collection. Obviously this is not true of all their perfumes, some are similar to what’s already on the market, but a lot of them are very original.

mrsreynolds · 31/01/2018 13:29

Ha!
I told dh that sexiest scent was like crystal meth to me 😂
I just sit and sniff myself 😍
MNND still going strong. Def lipstick rose-a-like. A good choice if you can't afford the Frederic malle who can!!?
I have about 6 4610s to try now...oh dear. My poor bank balance

mrsreynolds · 31/01/2018 13:30

Pest...this is true! and I'll have more money to spend next month!
😁

MrsGruber · 31/01/2018 16:46

Some nice choices today: Sikkim Girls, Copal Azur, Centrepiece

Ollivander84 · 31/01/2018 17:15

SOTD is 4160 - mother natures naughty daughters

mrsreynolds · 31/01/2018 17:29

Me too ollivander!
It's lovely

MrsGruber · 31/01/2018 17:48

And MNsNDs!

BluebellGal · 31/01/2018 18:03

Ok so 4160 seems to be working it’s magic again today- I’m am now really enjoying Centrepiece after a rocky start. I will give it another squirt tonight when I get home

BluebellGal · 31/01/2018 18:03

Lots of 4160 Tuesdays love on the thread today!
