Welcome to the long running perfume thread. Discuss Scent of the Day, fave dupes and scents of ALL price brackets. You don’t have to spend a fortune and we will encourage you to get a sample first. That said, hiding your credit card in the freezer is recommended.

Old thread

We also have managed to get a 20% discount on a Perfume Society box and are discussing it on The Big Sniff.

Motoko I wonder what your perfume making kit was like. I remember mashing up jasmin and roses trying to make scent cooking it in water on this kiddie cooker we had. Always disappointing although the cooker was amazing. Proper electric cooker and oven just child-size. I wonder if you can even get anything that real today.

Ollivander84 · 16/02/2018 08:20

SOTD is our modern lives blue screen/horizon

explodingkittens · 16/02/2018 08:46

Glad you're enjoying the Lab on Fire, @bluebell. I seem to remember that it went a bit baby-powderish on me, not at all unpleasant but not terribly interesting. It sounds as if it works a bit better on you!

I feel really sinus-y today and have a lonnnnggg afternoon of interviewing applicants for my course coming up. Bof. Roll on the weekend.

Motoko · 16/02/2018 09:19

Last I'd have loved your cooker! I vaguely remember using some of the perfume to mix in a cream (it might have been a face cream of mum's), putting it in a little tub and glueing pearls on the lid, and giving it to Mum.

I also tried to make perfume by steeping rose petals in water, but it just turned brown, and the petals into brown mush!

lasttimeround · 16/02/2018 09:55

Yes it was fab. Must have been very low heat as we never got burned but we made pancakes.
I aldo got the sludge for all my efforts and no adult ever thought it might be nice to tell me to steep things in oil instead.

FragrantFloozy · 16/02/2018 10:21

Morning perfumistas.

My DD regularly ‘makes perfume’ using butchered flowers from the garden, big globs of various precious and expensive lotions of mine and squirts of my actual perfume. Delightful Grin.

I’ve mulling over SOTD today, as I have a whole evening to myself tonight. DH on an overnight trip and the DC are off to my mums for the night. What to do and what perfume to wear to celebrate my freedom?

MrsGruber · 16/02/2018 10:49

You guys really need to go and do a 4160s workshop Grin. It's like being let loose in a sweet shop, only better. Sarah is really good at providing just the right amount of individual guidance to ensure you go home with something you like, so no need to worry on that front.

MrsGruber · 16/02/2018 10:53

I'm back in my OTT fluffy pale peach faux fur coat and a liberal application of Traversee du Bosphore. This is borderline ridiculous but very satisfying.

JanetStWalker · 16/02/2018 11:04

Everything is getting posted today, even yours MrsG (sorry for the delay). Where sells that Tauer Amber oil? It's a need not a want! Wearing Suki Essence today, it reminds me a lot of Organza Indecence - that was a firm favourite of mine, discontinued now of course.

teta, thank you so much for the BdI as expected it's a huge love, I shall definitely be treating myself to a bottle in the autumn. I have a vat of the EDT so do let me know if you'd like some to compare.

explodingkittens · 16/02/2018 11:13

The Tauer oils (and the attar) will ship to the UK from the site, just not the perfumes.

MrsGruber · 16/02/2018 11:18

Ha! Thought it might appeal Smile. Bad news is you need to buy direct from Tauer in Switzerland. Good news is they deliver quickly and I think 50mls is still less that £30 including P&P. Grin Grin. (I'd link but for some reason my antivirus software has taken a sudden dislike to the Tauer site.).

JanetStWalker · 16/02/2018 11:18

Thank you, I thought I hadn't seen it stocked in the usual places. What's the rose oil like, anyone tried it?

JanetStWalker · 16/02/2018 11:20

SOLD! MrsG wins today's enabler badge. Grin

JanetStWalker · 16/02/2018 11:43

A steal at £20, free P+P!

auberginesrus · 16/02/2018 12:21

I'm in 4160s Ealing Green today. I love it, its right up my fresh and grassy street but has faded quite quickly. Has a hint of pine cleaning stuff (in a good way) now.

CountFosco · 16/02/2018 12:50

SotD Goodbye Picadilly. Lots of violet and iris with a touch of leather initially but I'm settling into vanilla now (actually I'm getting leather again as well). Has that 4160 fruity exuberance in the florals, feels like the more sensible (these things are relative) big sister of TKD.

Motoko · 16/02/2018 12:50

I'd love to do a 4160s workshop, but I'm too far from London and need my husband to wheel me around when we go out. It's a shame they weren't around when I was well and doing my soap making. It would have been really instructive, as I did play around with blending essential oils for my soaps.

SOTD is one of the samples I got from Perfumista, Atelier Des Ors Lune Feline. I don't remember the notes, but I'm getting creamy vanilla, maybe chocolate, and heavy on pepper. I've only just put it on, so those are the top notes. I'm liking it, it feels warm and cosy.

CountFosco · 16/02/2018 12:52

Apparently Im Dead thread, starts off hilarious, but gets darker and more so on the second thread (there's a link by the OP at the end of this one).

MotherofTerriers · 16/02/2018 13:01

I'm trying Rome 1963 today. It smells like Glastonbury - quite aggressively at first, but now its settled down I quite like it

JanetStWalker · 16/02/2018 13:13

What We Do In Paris Is Secret, reminds of rose macarons and soft, snuggly jumpers. I expected something a little racier based on the name.

MrsGruber · 16/02/2018 13:14

I've never been to Glastonbury . but I didn't imagine it would smell like that. Had imagined mud, the tang of chemical toilets, unwashed bodies and a hint of bean burgers on the bbq?

auberginesrus · 16/02/2018 14:29

I love the idea of a perfume that smells like Glastonbury Grin

MotherofTerriers · 16/02/2018 14:42

Kind of patchouli - incense-ish. Think quaint little crystals and magikal supplies shops down side streets in Glastonbury town rather than mud and chemical toilets. Maybe a hint of beanburger in the top notes.....:)

positivepineapple · 16/02/2018 14:43

The 4160 workshops sound amazing - I would love to get to one next time I'm in London, there always seems to be so much on the agenda and so little time to do it!

The scents I'm currently loving are Black Opium, Dior Savage (stolen from hubby) and Pomegranate Noir - not sure what people's opinions are on Jo Malone? I can't say I love any of the others that much but PN just does it for me. I love that warm peppery spiciness - just wish it lasted longer.

My collection leans towards Oriental florals mostly. Angel being my longest loved scent - consistently had a bottle in my collection for nearly 20 years.

Scents that I'm not keen on - maybe not tried the right ones yet? Heavy citrus just doesn't do it for me.

I'm wearing Avery E today from the Big Sniff box, I'm unsure at the moment - think it may need a few more wears until I can say whether I like it or not. Reminds me of Anais Anais at the moment.

Can you recommend any more sample boxes for an apprentice sniffer?

CheapTarnishedGlitter · 16/02/2018 14:47

Hello everyone! Floofy hope the shitness has been a bit less shit; Judy hope the 19 sorts of the silly ones!

Would absolutely love the workshop but a bit nervous I'd inadvertently copy something I already love!

Didn't catch up yesterday - had a two and a half hour journey back from work which should have been 45mins so everything else was crazy and hectic thereafter... SotD was Elle Saab Girl of Now. Meh.

SotD today is Olfactive Studios Something or other. Have forgotten the name (!) bit It's from the Bloom Violet box. I'm rather taken with this - the tabacco-y opening is stronger than usually like but I enjoyed it in this. The violet is quite late to kick in and I'm left with a lovely violet-vanilla-faint tobacco skin scent. Nice nice nice!!
