Welcome to the long running perfume thread. Discuss Scent of the Day, fave dupes and scents of ALL price brackets. You don’t have to spend a fortune and we will encourage you to get a sample first. That said, hiding your credit card in the freezer is recommended.

Old thread

We also have managed to get a 20% discount on a Perfume Society box and are discussing it on The Big Sniff.

Who sent me the Midnight in the Palace Garden? I’ve lost track! But thank you SO much. Heavenly!

Off to the post office in a bit, so will send out bits and bobs promised.

explodingkittens · 15/02/2018 11:05

That was me floozy - so glad you like It! It just didn't work on me but I know I'm in a minority so I'm pleased it's found a happy home Smile

teta · 15/02/2018 11:09

Profumum Roma’s Battito d Ali today . Orange blossom scented pastry tempered with Myrrh. Was digging though all my decants for swop and rediscovered this winter beauty.
Talking about grassy perfumes Roma do one with Violet and Rose that’s wonderful, but expensive and hard to get hold of called Ninfea. Bloom have several. The tennis lawn one was particularly evocative.
Will list my decants for swop later.
Bluebell it was me requesting the Miller Harris’s . Just let the samples I’ve sent you arrive first though.

MotherofTerriers · 15/02/2018 11:41

My 4160 testers arrived. Soooo excited
And even though the Jo Malone freeby thing is on, I only ordered a body scrub and a couple of soaps, no perfume.

Not sure what to try first. It all feels quite hipster-ish. I think I may have avocado on sourdough for lunch...

Love the packaging and I think they have popped a couple of extra samples in

mrsreynolds · 15/02/2018 11:45

Tell me if you like sexiest scent!!!
😊

MotherofTerriers · 15/02/2018 11:47

I will do
I have covered myself in Tokyo spring blossom
Didn't look at the notes, thought I'd see what I can smell and then see what I was supposed to smell
It's floral, very sweet, with something I can't quite put my finger on
Parma violets and something else...

BigPuddleOfFloofyCatOnTheFloor · 15/02/2018 12:11

Damn RL and it's inconvenient total shitness atm distracting me from perfume swapping!! Angry

Hopefully I can go through my stash and list my swapsies later. Such a good idea, thank you to whoever came up with it! Can someone also offer some cats free to a good home, and it'll be perfect? Grin

Mother I was a bit Hmm about some of the 4160s at first and thought I was missing something everyone seemed to love Blush, but they are real "growers" on me, and some of the ones I initially hated I now adore I too need to cultivate more patience with samples, the Sniff is showing me that!

I feel like I've missed loads of chat but will read back properly later!

Motoko · 15/02/2018 13:28

Floofy, you can have Mousecow, she's evil to poor Pixel. He'll be happily snoozing on my lap, and she'll come along, see Pixel is there, and jump up onto the sofa. She knows he'll then jump down to get away from her, and then she curls up on my prewarmed lap. She does the same if he's sitting elsewhere too. The "cow" in her name is very apt!

Having said that, I did manage to get him to stay the other day, so she had to make do with draping herself over my bony shins.

I do love her though, especially when she comes on the bed at night and snuggles up for a proper cuddle.
She's very pretty, long haired, white with brown patches and golden eyes.

MotherofTerriers · 15/02/2018 13:38

OK, once the initial hit of parma violets dissipated (the drydown?) it smells of wood. Cedar? Not sure. If I sniff my arm (keeping it classy) I smell wood, but still getting wafts of parma violets. After work I'll look at the notes to see if I'm getting it right
I don't dislike it, but its a bit too woody for me - although I can see that without the wood it would be too sweet.

explodingkittens · 15/02/2018 17:45

Got the SJP pack this afternoon. I've got all four on, two on each arm like lipstick swatches. First thoughts:

Stash: the most 'me' of the four; woody, very slightly balsamic, very slightly spicy. Would have liked a bit more 'punch' as the sillage seems poor but that could be partly because it's a rollerball. Will definitely wear this again though.

Lovely: yes it is. There's nothing to dislike about this; to criticise it would be like kicking a puppy. It's just a really pretty soft floral musk. I'm not sure I quite get the breathless hype but it is just...lovely. This will probably end up being a comforting CBA.

Lovely Sheer: too generic 'white floral' for me, I think, although I could imagine occasions when I'd wear it. It really, really reminds me of something else but I'm buggered if I know what. It's what I imagine a 'wedding' fragrance to be. I won't be wearing it at my wedding, though Grin

NYC: wow, this is red berries agogo - waaaaayyyyy too sweet and fruity for me. It smells like cheap shower gel imo. Disappointing. How the hell this is supposed to conjure up New York City is baffling; its more like slipping into a candyfloss coma on the 'It's A Small Small World' ride at Disneyland...

So, 1 winner, 1 very decent CBA, 1 yeah, maybe, sometimes and 1 dud. That's blind buying for ya Grin

mrsreynolds · 15/02/2018 17:51

My sister wore lovely
It's a bit meh for me
Haven't smelt her others
I've got an awful headache so no sotd now 😔

MotherofTerriers · 15/02/2018 17:57

OK, read the notes - I completely missed the tangerine and grapefruit, and can't smell it even now I know its supposed to be there. Maybe the wood smell is opoponax
Interesting, but wouldn't buy a full bottle

mrsreynolds · 15/02/2018 18:09

I often look at notes in bafflement tbh...i think perhaps I'm anosmic to certain scents?

CountFosco · 15/02/2018 19:50

My perfume arrived, thanks Kittens. I've not sent mine back to you yet but should get it away at the weekend.

SotD 24 Old Bond Street. Loved the opening (touch of spice) then it went a bit austere and masculine on me (juniper predominating) but the final drydown was more attractive. Might try it on DH.

Came home and put on TKD for the evening while I eat chocolate and catch up on the Apparently I'm Dead threads.

Judydreamsofhorses · 15/02/2018 20:08

SOTD is Mitsouko, and what a crappy day it was. We were warned a few weeks ago that the principal would be observing lecturers over the next week. Today I found out that manager has nominated me. I should be flattered as it means he thinks I am doing a really good job, but the slot she’s picked is a class who I have only been teaching for a few weeks and am finding really tough going - no interaction, plus a lot of really silly immature boys. I am tempted to ring in sick. That will def be 19 for courage.

MrsGruber · 15/02/2018 20:12

Notes: yes, it's not easy as depending on the provenance, the same note can smell very different (and that's before you start combining them with other things). Not just depending on whether they are

derived from the naturally occuring thing, or a synthetic, but where they are from (australian vs mysore sandalwood) and their quality and their method of their production. I'm struggling with cedar - I usually really, really, like it, but I think I've come across some really shrieky cedars too. So when I see that note listed I have no idea which I'm going to get. Confused

SotD was Paris 1948. Which was more chalky and a bit less peachy than I remembered (not sure if the top note are quietening down?).

BluebellGal · 15/02/2018 20:57

Thank you kittens for the lovely package of samples. My DH is happy ok his Killian and I’m in lab on fire what we do in Paris which kinda smells like Addict... powdery floral creamy vanilla (although that’s just from memory as I don’t own any). Enjoying it snuggled up on sofa.

To everyone I owe samples to ... will be sending them on Saturday. Sorry for delay but just a little tricky to get to P.O. as work ft and have a toddler in tow- thanks for your patience x

I enjoyed the 4160 Rome 1963 this morning but it was gone by lunchtime... although I had initial reservations it was atmospheric and interesting

explodingkittens · 15/02/2018 21:02

So pleased all the samples have arrived; enjoy Grin

Am fully in Lovely now. Dp has just told me to stop sniffing myself Shock

BluebellGal · 15/02/2018 21:02

Good observation on notes there mrsgruber I’m really interested in learning more, but not too bothered about making my own perfume as I know others can do it better! Can you learn about perfume without making your own? Anyone up for it spring/ early summer when weathers a bit better? Something to look forward to in these dreary winter days!

Ah judy that’s really crap, why didn’t your boss pick a better group to showcase? Still quite a compliment for you!

Countfosco What are the apparently I’m dead threads? Sounds interesting!

mrsreynolds · 15/02/2018 21:38

I think if I tried to make a perfume it would smell baaaaddd 😁
Still no sotd as my head is still muzzy

positivepineapple · 15/02/2018 22:12

Hello!

Stumbled across big sniff a while ago and then found this thread, hope you guys don't mind me jumping in. Smile

Long time perfume obsessive, but never realised there was a place to discuss (reasoning to buy more perfume) with like minded (but actually knowledgable) sniffers until I joined MN.

I'm here to learn - so all advice & recommendations more than welcome. Grin

FragrantFloozy · 15/02/2018 22:18

Welcome positivepineapple. Always nice to have another perfume freak on board Grin.

Didn’t get to the post office in the end but promise will send out samples over the weekend.

Had a boozy meal out tonight and now relaxing in bed in M.Micallef Ananda Dolce - huge peachy doll-head gourmand weirdo. Love it.

BluebellGal · 15/02/2018 22:19

Hello pineapple lovely to have you here. What sort of fragrances do you like?

I’m loving the Lab on Fire what we do in Paris ... it’s a creamy vanilla bomb, but in a soft and classy way. I’m getting lots of incense too. Really like it.

I think I need to give Addict another sample as I think it could be similar.

Motoko · 16/02/2018 00:46

The talk about making perfumes has just reminded me that I had a perfume making kit when I was a child! I don't remember anything about it though, just that I had one.

I guess that was the start of my perfume journey.

explodingkittens · 16/02/2018 07:03

Welcome @pineapple - tell us all about your faves!

I was in a meeting yesterday with a colleague (who is also a friend) and he was wearing MMM By the Fireplace - he smelled delicious. I texted him later to check I was right - his reaction was 'your nose is incredible!' - until I reminded him we'd spent a slightly tipsy evening a few months ago going through his fragrance collection after dinner so I already knew he had it Wink I'm good but not that good!

The convo went a bit quiet when I told him I was in SJP Lovely though - he likes his scents niche and spendy GrinGrin

SOTD is Stash.
